NOTES |
I keep seeing acronyms and shorthand terms in people’s
posts. What do they mean? |
We’ve prepared a list of all
these terms, which includes general internet acronyms and buzzwords, and
terms relating to Harry Potter, HP fanfiction and other topics. See link to the file on the right. |
|
I’m confused by all the sister clubs associated with HP
for Grown Ups. |
That’s understandable. There are two new annex clubs:
HPFGU-OTChatter and HPFGU-Announcements (see links right). There are a number of other
related clubs. There’s Chatscripts
for transcripts of our Sunday chat sessions, Graphics for storing images,
Tour for discussing a possible tour of HP-related places in the the UK, Archives,
which holds our Yahoo messages (Oct 1999-Aug 2000) and Archives1, which is an
ongoing archive of messages in this incarnation of the club. Links to all these clubs are
listed in our Portkey file (see link right).
This file also includes links to recommended sites for great
fanfiction and other adult-related HP activities. |
|
I’m not sure what’s allowed and what’s not allowed when
posting to HP for Grown Ups. |
If you have any doubts, please
read our Netiquette Tips. EVERYONE who hasn’t read this
file should give it a read. The tips
give general advice, but they also include specific rules that we have
set. |

I’ve seen mention of substantive FAQ essays, but I
can’t find them. What are they and
where are they? |
In mid-2000 a group of us
began analysing all the messages posted to the club and sorting them into
topical categories, such as “Hermione Granger,” “Charms & Spells,”
“Wizarding World: Geography” and “Recommended Reading”. A smaller group of us then began work on
in-depth FAQs or essays based on the messages. Several of these essays are
now in draft form, so please bear with us… details will be posted soon! |
|
I’ve noticed that people post chapter summaries and
character sketches at the start of each week. What this about? |
This is something we started
in May of 2000, with a view to keeping the discussions moving until Book 5 came
out. A group of volunteers write
summaries to lead off the discussions each week. We’ve been working our way
through Goblet of Fire, chapter by chapter and through HP characters,
starting with minor characters and working up to the main players. See the links on the right for
a list of schedule discussions and link-lists to the completed summaries. |
|
Do we have any live chat sessions? If so, when are they? How do I get into the chat room? |
We have a scheduled chat
session every Sunday. See the link on
the right for more details. Check out the Chatscripts club
for transcripts of previous chat sessions and other information. |
|
What other stuff goes on in this club? |
Check out the Bookmarks, Polls
and Database in the main club area and make sure you look at the Portkey file
for more information. |

In Goblet of Fire, did anyone see that gleam in Dumbledore’s
eye? What did it mean? |
Yes, we saw that. As for the meaning, you can read opinions
in the Albus Dumbledore FAQ (see right). |

In Goblet of Fire, during the fight between Harry and
Voldemort, James Potter appears from Voldemort’s wand before Lily
Potter. Surely Lily should have
appeared first if she was killed after James? |
This was an error. The scene was rewritten for later editions
of the book. Both Bloomsbury (UK
publisher) and Scholastic (US publisher) have confirmed this. |

Are there differences between the US and UK editions of
the books? |
Yes. The books were Americanised by Scholastic. The changes mostly involved changing words
for the sake of understanding (e.g. “fringe” to “bangs”), but our members
have also spotted some significant differences in the text. |

I’ve seen PoU mentioned. What is this? |
PoU = Paradigm of Uncertainty,
a fanfic by Lori Summers, based some years after Harry and the others have
left Hogwarts. There is a site for
reading and discussing this fanfic, its sequel and a prequel by Penny and
Carole, plus Draco-oriented stories by Cassandra Claire. |
PoU is listed in our Portkey
file. |
I’ve seen HP_Paradise or Paradise mentioned. What is this? |
HP_Paradise is another club based
around the fanfic of some of our members, including Ebony’s (Angie J’s )
fanfic “Trouble In Paradise” and Heidi’s “A Surfeit of Curses”. |
HP_Paradise is listed in our Portkey
file. |
Where else can I read and discuss HP fanfiction? |
|
See Portkey
file for recommendations. |
I’ve heard that JK Rowling is releasing something
called “Harry Potter’s Schoolbooks” in 2001.
Is this true and where can I get them? |
Yes, it is true. JKR has written two Harry Potter spin-off
books in aid of the charity ‘Comic Relief’: “Quidditch Through the Ages” by
Kenilworthy Whisp, and “Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them” by Newt
Scamander. In the US, they are available
as a pair, under the title “Harry Potter’s Schoolbooks,” and in the UK, they
are available individually. |
Details are on the Comic Relief website. Pre-order the books
individually on Amazon.co.uk or as a
pair on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble’s website. |
I’m in the US (or not in the UK) and I want to buy the
UK editions of the books. Where can I
buy them? |
Check out the online facility
for British booksellers WHSmiths or the internet vendors amazon.co.uk or
books online (BOL). Links are on the
right. They will all mail books
outside the UK and they often offer discounts. |
|
I’ve seen a reference to ‘adult’ versions of the books
in the UK. Is the content different to
that of the regular books? |
No. The books are exactly the same, except for the covers. Bloomsbury released all the books with
photoreal black and white covers, aimed at adult readers. |
|
In Chamber of Secrets Dumbledore says Voldemort is the
last surviving ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. How can this be true? |
There are later editions in
which the word “ancestor” has been changed to “descendent”. This was an error, but there is mixed
views on how this will be handled by the author. |

Who are the characters on the front of the US edition
of Goblet of Fire? |
It’s the Four Champions in the
Triwizard Tourament. |
|
What is that small insect-like creature on the back of
the US edition of Goblet of Fire? |
It’s supposed to be a
Blast-Ended Skrewt, but doesn’t look much like one. No, it’s not Rita Skeeter. |
