Guidelines for composing new Fantastic Posts

I will be coding the HTML for your text. You write, I code. Please simply follow these guidelines:

Citations

  • For references to the current group HPforGrownups, put a "G" in front of the message number: e.g. G40554.
  • For references to the archived group HPforGrownups-Archives (the old Yahoo Club "Harry Potter for Grownups"), put a "C" in front of the message number: e.g. C751.
  • These message numbers can be put in parentheses within sentences (as in the Snape FP), listed at the end of a sentence (as in the Sirius FP) or listed at the end of the paragraph (as in Hypothetic Alley). Make sure they are put fairly close to where they come up in your text so it's clear which posts apply to which topics. Please do not use footnotes.
  • Please do not use commas within post numbers. Pound signs (#) are not necessary.
  • If you cite canon and want to give a reference, please do so within parentheses or brackets right after the citation: e.g. [GoF: Chapter 25]. Again, please do not use footnotes.

General format

  • Please include a Table of Contents listing every major subheading for your document. Don't worry about internal links and 'back to top's; that's my job.
  • Please avoid ALLCAPS headers. I will put your headers in a standard format.
  • You may get your document to me by pasting it into the body of an email, saving it as a text file, or saving it as HTML if you must. If your document contains complicated tables or charts (as with the History of HPfGU) then you will probably need to use your word processor's "save as HTML" function to preserve them. Otherwise, text files are preferable. Note: I often have trouble opening Microsoft Word documents, so please avoid sending me anything in that format.
  • Whatever format you use, email it to me when you are done: porphyria@mindspring.com.
  • The internal organization of an FP is up to you. Some lend themselves more to lists of posts (such as the Sirius FP), some more to paragraph style (as with the Snape FP). Pick whichever suits your subject matter.

Color/Style

  • Look over the existing Fantastic Posts (linked from here) and let me know which one comes the closest to what you want. You may pick your own color scheme; either find the hex codes or just describe to me what colors you want. All FPs will have black text on a pale background. Borders are optional, as are background graphics. The existing FPs should give you plenty of examples to get an idea.

Please direct any additional questions or concerns to me.
Thanks!
