Basic HPfGU Posting Guidelines

NOTE: This page is the "Cliff's Notes" version of our posting policies to help you get started.
See the Humongous BigFile for all of our policies.

  • Do your homework.

    • When joining a discussion already in progress, read the entire thread first.
    • Read the FAQ to avoid asking obvious questions.
    • Comply with these posting guidelines so that you don't get your messages sent back for editing.

  • Use the right list for your topic.

    • HPforGrownups: for discussion of the HP books only (including book-related information from
      JKR's website or interviews).
    • HPfGU-OTChatter: for how to navigate JKR's Web site, introducing yourself, and any random topic you'd like.
    • HPfGU-Movie: for discussing the movies, which are not canon.
    • HPfGU is not for fanfic discussion. Sorry.

  • Format your message properly.

    • Put your comments after the quotage.
    • Snip out as much quotage as possible, leaving only the relevant points.
    • Be sure you properly attribute each quote to its proper author.
    • Avoid excessive nested attribution; after two levels, it can get awfully confusing.
    • Sign your message at the bottom so that people can properly quote you.
    • For examples, see the HPfGU Formatting Tutorial.

  • Use good English.

    • Use accepted writing conventions (US or UK). Don't use "L8R" for "later," etc.
    • Capitalize proper nouns (character names) and the pronoun "I."
    • If spelling isn't your strongest suit, use spell-check.
    • Remember that some of our readers are dyslexic, visually impaired, or speak English as a second language. Poor writing conventions can ruin your message for them.
    • Contact the Help Desk if you want help editing your posts.

  • Say something worth saying.

    • We strongly discourage one-liners and forbid "me too" posts that state mere agreement. If you want to compliment a writer, send your kudos off-list.
    • Make sure your question hasn't been discussed recently.  Check the posts for the last two weeks, at least. Here's how to search our archive using Yahoomort's Search Engine of Despair.
    • Make sure your question isn't answered in the FAQ.

  • Curb your enthusiasm.

    • Please don't post dozens of times per day. We understand how much fun it can be to respond, but it really does get wearisome to hear from the same person over and over again. If you post more than about a half-dozen posts per day regularly, we suggest you cut back a bit.
    • Don't respond separately to each post in the same thread on the same day. Read the whole thread first, then combine the quotage tidbits with your comments in One Big Post.

  • Observe basic netiquette.

    • No ad hominem attacks (flames): you can challenge ideas, but don't insult people.
    • Avoid expletives and obscenity.
  • Observe copyright and terms of use
    • By posting on any of the HPFGU lists, you agree to adhere to the Yahoo Terms of Use, located at http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms.
    • You may not post an entire article, but you may post a summary with the link.
    • You may not post links to illegal electronic copies of the Harry Potter series.
    • By posting to HPfGU, you grant the HPfGU List Administrators the license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt and publicly display such post(s) for the purposes of providing and promoting the various HPfGU groups and sites.
