As my subject says, I thought I'd start off the formal movie plan discussion - thanks to Rita's prompting. :) I'm located in the central valley (Porterville, to be exact - about an hour north of Bakersfield), so I'm willing to travel to either the Bay Area or L.A. in most cases. However, my sister-in-law is also a big HP fan, and she's based in L.A. (Santa Monica), so for the most part, I was planning on going down there to watch the movie when it comes out -- especially since her fiance agreed to babysit my 2yo. I think our plan was to see it in Westwood. That way, though we'll still probably hit huge crowds, they'll tend towards the 18 and over crowd. If anyone can make it to Westwood on the 16th, we can plan a lunch get-together first... you know, buy tickets, meet somewhere for lunch, then walk as a crowd to the movie theater. My husband went to UCLA for graduate school, so he knows all the good (and cheap) restaurants in the area. If you have a better idea for a location, by all means, speak up. I can always go with my SIL the next weekend... especially since we'll probably be spending Thanksgiving with her. ;) Jen (who is hoping for a BIG turn out for opening day) From foxmoth at ... I'm sure you're surprised to get a message after so much inactivity, but the movie's only a month and a half away (yay!), so I thought I'd give you something more to talk about. My sister-in-law lives in Los Angeles, and as far as she knows, HP will be playing at the Mann Bruin in Westwood - the "big" theater. I also know that it will be playing at the theater in Century City Plaza, but since it's a multiplex, it might be harder to get tickets there before they sell out. How about we all come to an agreement on a theater? Those of you who live in Los Angeles (or are nearby, anyway), could you check out your local theaters and find out which ones will be playing the movie? Personally, I like the Mann Bruin - I saw a movie there once (of course, I can't remember which one now) and it was just wonderful. *Lots* of comfy seats, nice neighborhood. Of course, I'm sure we can expect it to be crowded. Do any of you have any better suggestions? HP is now on the "Coming Soon" lists, and I'm sure we're all excited. I'd like to have us come up with a plan for the 16th... and I'd especially like to have input from our members in the Los Angeles area. For the two or three of you in the San Diego area, if you're not planning to come to L.A. to watch the movie with us, you could plan a smaller gathering between you locally. Here's what we should decide. 1. What time do we want to watch the movie? 2. Should we buy our tickets as a group? Or should we just leave it to ourselves to buy our own tickets and just watch the show as a group? 3. Where do you want to have lunch/dinner? Before or after the movie? Do you want to watch two movies in a row and have lunch before the first one and dinner after the second one? You just want to skip the movie and hang out for a while? (hehe... kidding!) 4. Should we all wear funny hats or shirts or a pin or something so that we can recognize each other? Should I print out an iron-on transfer of the "Official HP4GU Logo" and iron it onto a cheap-o t-shirt and mail it out to everyone? And of course, if I didn't mention something, bring it up. I'm looking forward to going, and am happy to do whatever "the group" (if the group decides to go en mass) wants to do. I have a couple of friends who are not on these lists, but who also are very much looking forward to HP...the movie. Based on meetings of quilters from the (rec.crafts.textiles.quilting) newsgroup, having some kind of identification makes it sort of easier to find one another, especially when you have no idea what any of the other folks look like (whether it be a t-shirt, pin, banner, or whatever). Although getting a mess of tickets to cover everyone would be nice, especially if not everyone could either get to the theater to buy them, or purchase them on-line or by phone, if that is an option, but that means someone has to be responsible for doing it. It would allow us to attend the same showing, though. We need to decide which showing is The One. Anyway, whatever I can do to help, feel free to ask. My husband (a community college instructor here) has an 8-9am class, a 9-10am office hour, and a 10-11am class on Fridays (he also has chess club, but he looks over that with a friend, so he can miss that). So we'd be out of here at about noon. We'd check in at his sister's apartment at about 3pm. Robin gets off work at around 5-6, I think (and she really wants to go with us), and Paul just got a new job, so I'm just going to assume that he gets off at 5-6, too (and he offered to babysit Ginger so that my husband could come see the movie, too). So. If I come by myself (and my husband is the expert on L.A. directions/driving/location... I freak out in L.A. traffic), I can be at a movie anytime after 3-3:30. If my husband and his sister come, I have to wait until 5 or 6. I'll get in touch with Robin (who wears the pants in the family) and see what their schedule is. Thanks for the offer... but if you're coming up from San Diego, I think I'm a bit too north for you - I remember driving down to La Jolla to visit my sister in college, and it took us 5+ hours to get down there... However, if anyone's coming from the north SJ valley (i.e., Sacramento, Modesto, Fresno, etc), I'll let *you* pick me up. ;) By the way, I have a friend in the Bay area (near Stanford, actually), and she's interested in coming down for the movie... I *might* be able to get her to stop through Porterville first and pick me up... if I take over driving for her. So. There might be a way for me to get down to L.A. early enough for an early afternoon showing. RE: tickets... does the Bridge have a website? we *might* be able to all order our tickets online... especially if they're affiliated with a "chain" company, like Mann or Cinemark. (Does Cinemark even exist anymore?) Otherwise, I like the idea of one person picking up a multitude of tickets (of course, they probably have a maximum). My husband is going down to L.A. this weekend with my daughter (to watch a car race - which I'm not interested in, but I'd go anyway if it weren't for the fact that his racist, vain uncle is going to be there, and I feel like he's criticizing my weight every time I see him - I don't need that stress), and as today is payday (yay!), he can afford to pick up a bunch if they're selling them early. Plus, he can scout out the location. I've been to the Fox Valley Mall before... I should be able to direct Julie if she's the one who has to take me. I have no problem with matinees... just seeing one would probably save my husband and me a lot of money. ;) It might not be a good idea to schedule movies so close together, though... we need to take into account that the movie is 2 1/2 hours long, and if we'd like to eat between films, we'd need to put an hour between them, at least... just considering the "rush" from the theater to any eateries in the area (hey! I just used the word eateries! It doesn't look like it's spelled right, though). Maybe a 3:30 showing (definitely within matinee time frame) and a 7:30? It is an out door mall type of thing. It has mexican food,Japanese food and a number of other restaurants right there in the complex, but we do need to put to some time in between films 7:15 and 11:30? 5:00 and 10:30 those are the only two times I can make it. We could go in groups and meet in- between films. We'll see what the poll turns up and go from there. I really would like for us to see the film together, but if we can't... Hopefully we can be flexible enough to get this accomplished. Schnoogles, Laila __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? IMHO, it'd be best if we decided to do a 5pm showing, dinner, and then a second showing for anyone who can stay. That way, we'll all (barring anyone who's coming to the later show and skipping the 5pm one) have seen the movie first, and we can discuss its merits/ demerits while eating. With our mouths full, of course. ;) Sorry, I seem to be in a pretty weird mood today... luckily, I won't be at home by myself anymore after this afternoon. How does this sound to everybody, and how > early do you think we should go in and grab seats? > > > > -- Dave Well, from the schedule (and my assumption that it's playing on 3 screens), it looks like they're leaving about 45 minutes between shows. This makes a lot of sense, because they're going to need at least 15 minutes to clean the theater, and then 30 minutes to stuff it full of people. We can pick up our tickets from the box office *any* time that day, so we won't need to wait in line at the ticket booth, but the big lines are going to be outside the theater waiting to grab a seat. For the first showing, at least, we should have a designated group of "delegates" waiting outside the theater to wave down members, and a designated group of "seat holders" who get there early enough to get at the front of any lines and can save some seats for us. It's usually okay for someone to save a seat or two - everyone has the right to get popcorn and go potty - especially before a 2 1/2 hour movie. ;) My suggestion: if we're bringing a date (I'm going to have someone with me for both shows), we can send our dates in to save seats, and we members can stand outside for any stragglers. Any better ideas? Should we just have a "sign-up" for seat savers and people greeters? Thank you one million times to the lovely people who made sure there is tickets for me, and: hey, Jen, if you still have those extras, I'll buy them for Tim. I need you-uns to tell me where and when to meet, but I had an idea for a sign to for us to find each other: put the HPfGU logo on an iron-on transfer, iron it on to a cloth, put the cloth on a pole to wave as a flag. If you-uns want me to do it, I might put the logo on an actual t-shirt, the t-shirt on a wire hanger and hang it from a broom as the pole. I had a fabulous time in NYC and NJ, seeing friends who have nothing to do with these lists (and missing Cassie and Jenny! Sigh!) and got home last night. Starbucks was mentioned as a "meet there, then go somewhere else" place, but I'm not sure that's a great idea, as people are going to be showing up at different times, and besides, that was for "dinner"... I think it would be safe if we met in front of the movie theater. That way, we can send our "dates" (my date for the first movie is my sister-in-law, Robin) to hold our places in line (or in the theater), and we can congregate until the movie starts. Here's a question: where does everyone like to sit? Should we even bother sitting together? It's not like we need to be close to each other to talk during the movie. ;) Now, for dinner. We need to pick a definite place, because Robin is going to go home after the movie (I think that's the plan, anyway), and my husband Chris/Buzz (Buzz is his nickname) is going to join me for dinner. However, he needs to drive from Santa Monica to Culver City, and that should take a good 10 - 15 minutes (depending on traffic), and we might not be at an initial meeting place after that. Since it's right in the front, I figured they wouldn't have to search for us, but I wanted us to meet in front of the theater initially. I've eaten at that Islands, and I can definitely vouch for it. But for a large group we'd probably need a reservation. I've also eaten at the Johnny Rockets, which has outdoor tables, so I would suggest that one - it would be easy to spot. Since it's tonight, I'll keep checking my email and see what you decided on. Hopefully I'll be able to catch you guys at 7:30 at Starbucks and avoid the hassle of trying to find you afterwards. I guess most of you know each other, but I'll wear my Muggles for Harry Potter button so I'll be easier to spot. Parlance ===== "I can't believe these errors. BTW I have never seen anyone in the egroup before except Pippin, so it's up to you-uns to find me. I had better know where/when to go, as I'm going to be a landmark: blue robe, pointy black witchy hat with white artificial flowers, broom with a t-shirt of HPfGU logo hanging from it -- Tim will have an impressive black leather cowboy hat and probably an impressive cloak. When the line for 5pm starts or I find that line, I will send Tim to stand in it to save places for us. It's The Bridge and Layla said: "Rita will be at the outside tables on the 2nd floor with her T-shirt, broom thingy. Time is the next question: what time does the first person need to get into line to save places for good seats for 5pm showing? I hope 4pm will be early enough. By the way, who wants to sit WAY upfront where your vision is distorted by having to stare UP at the screen, who besides Tim wants to sit somewhat up front, and who besides me wants to sit just back of the middle? Tim would be thrilled if a vote went his way. Dinner after the 5pm showing. We haven't decided where yet so we can't tell the people who want to meet up there. However, if someone comes looking for us and we are not readily visible, Tim and I both have cell phones & I will even power mine on for the occassion: he is 310-612-5675 and I am 213-215-3205.
