Let's see... Allie will be 11 months old that day (and probably not breastfeeding anymore!), so I'm really tempted. But you know... up here in central CA, the lines won't be so large. It's a toss-up - if I get the book here, I get it faster, have less of a chance of them running out before I get one, and I get to come home and sleep with it under my own pillow. If I get the book down south, I get to party. Hmmm. I'll have to think more about that one. At least we have 6 months to think about it. Jen, who already pre-ordered the UK version at amazon.co.uk for a grand total (after shipping) of $21.50 US - which will probably be less than waht she'll pay for the US version. There is a B&N in Palmdale, about 20 minutes from me and last time the GoF line wasn't too bad, IIRC. (I sent my son to stand in line for me, so I can't report first hand. Maybe you guys got scared off when I described it as a Yule Ball rather than a pizza party, which is what I thought it would actually be? Anyway, back to lurking. Any information would be great. It depends on what *part* of California you're thinking of, because this is a *big* state and even the climate is very different from place to place. All parts of California have earthquakes, as far as I know all parts have wild fires, many parts have floods and landslides, but IIRC only the northern part has active volcanoes. Most working people have long commutes, but I think there are some areas [rural] which don't get terrible traffic jams, and I'm under the impression that San Francisco and San Jose have adequate public transportation. At the present time, we are shutting down all our emergency rooms and libraries due to lack of income tax revenue due to lack of income to be taxed. I gather that the economy is dreadful, judging from the number of stores which have suddenly gone out of business after having been there since forever, and now their premises are standing vacant, with For Rent signs, like back in '91.... I live in Los Angeles, on the Westside, in Venice. Here the beach is in walking distance, the climate is almost perfect, finding a parking place is impossible, and the cost of housing -- to buy some little fixer-upper house is half a million dollars, and I think rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the new developments is $2000/month. My rent is lower than that because I've been in the same apartment a long time, and I have a nice landlady. Another part of the city of Los Angeles is named the San Fernando Valley, located inland and northerly of me. I would never submit to live there, as the weather is terrible! All summer days are over 100 degrees, up to 116, and some winter nights are below freezing --- it even *snows* once every ten years or so, and one time the snow stayed on the ground long enough for the CSUN students to make a snowman! A number of my friends do live in the Valley, because some parts of it are kind of run-down and have almost-affordable rents. Pippin lives far east of me, in the desert, but IIRC still in LA County, and still a place of commuting to jobs in LA, and perhaps she will be amused to tell you how nice the weather is in the Valley is compared to where she lives. British school robes run along much the same patterns as graduation gowns or choir robes here in the states. A judge's robe is even better; same pattern again, but usually better material. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Solnavitas, What Catlady wrote about not really knowing in San Francisco and San Jose I can answer. I live half way in between the 2 cities. Just off highway 101 near Palo Alto. The weather has been really bad this year with all the cold weather/warm weather. We do have earthquakes here along with wild fires in the hills around the Bay Area, and floods. In some areas you have to have flood insurance to live. We do have good transportation right now but because of the budget cuts that may change. There is traffic no matter what time of day you go anywhere but it's really bad during rush hours in the morning and afternoon. The beach is about 45 minutes away from us. There are about 10 major shopping malls all over the Bay Area. The rent is really bad. A 1 bedroom can go for about $1,000.00 a month depending on what city you are in. Renting a bedroom can even run about $500.00 a month. Some people have turned their garages into studio apartments. Sometimes its hard to find a place when the Stanford University students come back in August and September. Kathy P.S. Hello all, I saw this and just had to join in. I grew up in and recently moved back to the San Fernando Valley. And I was one of those CSUN students playing in the snow in '89. I love it here this is my home (I spent 8 years in Chicago after I graduated from CSUN). It does get hot, but at least it's a dry heat. There are pockets in the valley that are scumy, but there are some that are really nice. You just need to check them out. The problem with the Valley and LA in general is the traffic. I wonder if it's one ticket per person who has reserved a copy? It would be great if the first person to get there could tell them that they are part of a group of crazy people that would like to stand together in line, but each person has individually pre-ordered a copy, and couldn't we get one ticket for all of us? I will probably be aiming to arrive around 8:00. I am enough of a child at heart that I'm sure I will want to partake of whatever entertainment they are providing, but I can't see doing that for four whole hours. So a late dinner or snack seems like a good idea. And I may try to make my hair "bushy" for the occasion! I suppose they don't allow dogs. Last Hallowe'en my golden retriever came as my pet dragon Calvin the Caledonian Crested. It was *very* cute. Not easy, though, to juggle billowing robes, a wand, a leash, and a dog who had to be encouraged to keep his costume on and not pillage the food tables at our company Hallowe'en party Robin From waterdogn at waterdogn.yahoo.invalid Thu Jun 19 20:38:48 2003 From: waterdogn at waterdogn.yahoo.invalid (waterdogn) Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 20:38:48 -0000 Subject: Location of Santa Clarita B & N In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Did a little map homework: 23630 Valencia Blvd. Santa Clarita CA 91355 661 254-6604 >From I-5 take the Valencia Blvd exit. We had a great time, and went to Pippin's after, where we a listened to the first four chapters on the tape, then Rita and Pippin read about 300 pages (and I slept, so I could drive home). I wore my Ren Faire cape and leather jerkin and a black lace shirt, and my everyday jeans, cowboy boots, and black leather cowboy hat (there are a couple group pics with me in pretty much the same get up in the files section, though now I have a foot long white beard), and from the moment we got inside the store till we left, various people kept calling me Hagrid. I finally gave up and when they announced the costume competition I entered, as Hagrid, and was one of the ten winners. I feel a little sorry for whoever I aced out who actually put some effort into an actual costume. Susan Fox-Davis wrote: > I've done my first speed-read-through. I know that a lot of people are going to be in Orlando. However, a small group of us will not be. I was hoping that those of us left here in So Cal could get together while you are in Orlando and then do a second meeting with everyone in August. I'm not trying to exclude anyone. Maybe to avoid further confusion I would propose that we move the planning phase off the main list. I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, but I'm willing to organize a meeting for those of us who are not going to Orlando. Please feel free to e-mail me directly It's just that, I was wonderfully surprised to find that I wasn't the only one who wasn't going to Orlando and was disappointed when talk of a meeting of locals sounded like it was going to happen there. I'd still love to meet everyone. Again, I'm just putting stuff out there but if I am stepping on toes just tell me to shut it. I will step back. Alright, it's late and I'm going to bed. That is so weird. Okay, not all of it, but the "ABC Seafood". My dim sum experience is in Monterey Park at "NBC Seafood" (at least, that's what my hubby remembers as the name...). Very good... VERY crowded. Long long wait, but definitely worth it. However, patronage is almost exclusively Chinese (by that, I mean Cantonese - we went with 2 Cantonese-Americans, 1 Cantonese guy, and 1 Mandarin girl, who was at an almost total loss when it came to ordering, so we had the Cantonese guy order for us), so I spent the entire meal trying to look inconspicuous, which is very hard when you're 1 of only 3 white people (and all of them were at our table) in the whole restaurant. Took us 3 hours to finish that meal. What a great time! My hubby's family is over for the weekend, so I'm using the pre-decent-weekend-awakening-time to send this off. Gonna have a busy day. Hope everyone has a great first weekend of fall! Me? It's gonna be 98 degrees here today (average for today is 89), so I'm pretty bummed. It's fall, dammit! NBC Seafood and ABC Seafood are owned by the same person, an immigrant from Hong Kong. I don't know if he has a CBS Seafood as well. (Fox and WB weren't TV networks when these two restaurants were founded.) Monterey Park is on the other side of Downtown from where I live, but is supposed to be the home of the best dim sum in USA, but one time the Golds led six of us on an expedition to a highly praised dim sum restaurant in Monterey Park and we thought it wasn't as good as Empress Pavilion. > However, patronage is almost exclusively Chinese (by that, I > mean Cantonese - we went with 2 Cantonese-Americans, 1 Cantonese > guy, and 1 Mandarin girl, who was at an almost total loss when it > came to ordering, so we had the Cantonese guy order for us), For many years, Miriwa was in the building that now holds Ocean Seafood. I *loved* Miriwa (altho' it can be argued that Ocean Seafood is even better) and went there often with groups from work. One time the group *happened* to be all-female and consist of one white (me), one black (Roz), one Latina (Maria), and one Asian (Lois). Lois is from Taiwan and speaks Mandarin and told us in advance that she doesn't speak restaurant ... which turned out not to be true, starting with laughing at what one car angrily shouted at another car in the parking lot, and continuing into long happy conversations with the servers, with resulted in many new-to-me food items appearing on our table, things I could never request again, because whenever I asked Lois what they were called, she just said: "You'll like it". Speaking Mandarin was one of Miriwa's uniquenesses among restaurants. > so I spent the entire meal trying to look inconspicuous, which is > very hard when you're 1 of only 3 white people (and all of them > were at our table) in the whole restaurant. Took us 3 hours to > finish that meal. What a great time! I generally feel proud of myself rather than embarrassed when I find myself at the only white-people table in the Chinese restaurant (proud of going to a right restaurant, not of being white). What made me feel out of place at the Monterey Park restaurant was being a completely child-less table, while toddlers were zooming around all over the restaurant... That might be an *advantage* for your family. > Hope everyone has a great first weekend of fall! Me? It's > gonna be 98 degrees here today (average for today is 89), so I'm > pretty bummed. In recent months Davis has made 359 selections for posts ranging from positions on the UC Board of Regents and the California Parks and Recreation Commission to those on less visible boards dealing with police officer training and workplace regulation. Folsom? As in, Folsom Prison? Where is that, anyway? I have a vague feeling that it's in Northern California, so is going through Los Angeles out of his way? I don't have a house to lend to the get-together, so does anyone else? For me, a get-together after work Thursday kind of depends on WHERE. We're all scattered over so much geography that any meeting place would be several hours' drive each way for SOMEone, and for me several hours of driving wouldn't leave me enough time to sleep and get up alive for work Friday. Friday night, with the negative of being some people's Sabbath, has the positive that I can stay up as late as I like because I don't have to go to work the next day. And if no one responds for a very long time to this post... I understand it's the holidays. Yippie! I don't know anything about any activity in the Sacramento area, partly from not paying attention but mostly from being in L.A. Most the movie hoopla I've seen for the last few weeks has been for "Return of the King", none for "PoA" (in fact I didn't realize it was due out yet). I may try a meetup, if not I'll start my own. As of late the movie hoopla is mostly for LOTR... btw when I saw 'Return of the King' they showed the 'Prisoner of Azkaban' trailer... woowoo! It's online now too - http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/harry_potter-azkaban/ During the previews when the 'POA' teaser started, this girl behind me actually squealed. Very funny.
