Following your proposed itinerary it's a total of 477 miles and 8 hours (that's up I-5 than across the Coastal range to Monterey, and up PCH and US-101 the rest of the way). These distance and time estimates are one way and without stopping. I-5 is a fast, but tedious, drive, it basically doesn't change from Bakersfield to Sacramento (about 300 miles). For a more pleasant, but a bit slower drive I would recommend US-101 the whole way, for one it runs west of the Coastal range and for another it goes more closely directly to Monterey. As for the weather in April it can alternate between bright, and pleasantly warm (70s and 80s) (or sweltering if you're going up I-5 (often over 100)), and dreary, cold (40s and 50s F), and rainy, or foggy. Basically it sounds like a pleasant trip but you're not allowing enough time, I'd say a minimum of a week if you want to do more than just drive up, and turn around and come back. For three days you'll be spending all of your time on the road. -- I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation, from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all. Sounds like you're ready for an adventure! I travel often between Southern California and back (Sacramento... passed San Fran), and I think you're going to be driving most of the time rather than enjoying your trip. My advice, no Muir Woods (no time). It should take you about 5 hours to get to Monterrey (get an early start so you arrive in time to site see.... especially the aquarium and the 17 mile drive through Pebble Beach). I agree with the AAA map and info suggestion! I can send you the map stuff if you get me a mailing address for ya. Sign up for AAA at your home place if not already a member for the rate discounts, etc! My fiance' and I stayed in Monterrey at a nice, simple AAA hotel just up the street from down-town Carmel. We did it spur of the moment (no reservations... I'll look it up and letcha know name if you'd like) over Thanksgiving weekend! We also drove along the coast coming down from Sacramento, and went to Hearst Castle that weekend too! It was a driving weekend doing that, but we had fun! Hearst Castle in San Simeon was great, but you need to buy tickets in advance if you go and tour is about 4 hours long (must pick a time for your ticket too!). They sell out fast! It may be too much to do on your way back to Venice. If you had 4 days, I'd add it in! Unless you were driving straight to San Fran from Venice and back over the weekend, you really won't have time to do it justice! Once in San Fran you'll want to spend time there! So many things to do and so much fun! Drive back down Sunday morning (leave by 6am at latest), stop in Carmel/Monterey aquarium, lunch, shops, 17 mile drive, then back on to Venice down the coast. You won't miss the woods as Carmel has plenty and the drive back down along the coast is worth the extra hour or so! This will provide for a less rushed weekend, but still chock full of driving and lots of fun away from the car! You'll enjoy it all greatly! SuzAnne Sherrill Catherine wrote: Thanks for replying. Hmm...you will end up spending proportionally a lot of your days on the freeways. You might want to consider prioritizing and pick either northern *or* southern California. Just one or the other should already (over)fill your trip. I wrote up most of the below for other would-be CA visitors who after reading the tour guide books on CA had mostly decided to do just the north or just the south...and they had a week to spend here. I usually end up doing the LA to SF trip via the 5 anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, depending on if I'm driving alone and if there's major traffic at either ends. Either way, listening to the HP audiobooks makes playing leapfrog with the other drivers on the 5 much less annoying ("Oh for crying out loud, did you pass me a few miles back just to nod off now?" ). As this is your first trip, plan for getting lost at least once! Ok, maybe that's just me. You should also be aware that AAA has *two* books for CA, one for the northern and one for the southern. You'll want to ask for both. I've also done the 101 which takes a bit more time (an hour more?) but is prettier. I've heard the 1 is even more gorgeous since it hugs the coast more but I've yet to drive that route and can't speak to how much longer that takes. Seeing the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean is lovely though. April is usually pretty nice in CA but your best bet is to dress in layers. You will want to be in thin t-shirts and shorts and drink plenty of water during noon hours in LA but during night time in a desert climate like LA (and while standing on the Golden Gate Bridge as the fog rolls into the Bay) you'd want a sweatshirt maybe even a heavy sweater to pull on. A backpack to carry extra outer clothes in would come *really* handy. We're pretty casual out here so you can probably get away with bringing just comfortable clothes but you'll probably end up wearing light cotton, medium fleece, and heavy knit each once. If you forget, someone will be happy to sell you a t-shirt or sweatshirt that says "Go 49ers!" or "Hollywood or Bust." BTW, one of my favorite April events in SoCal is the LATimes Festival of Books which is being held at UCLA (not too far from Venice) on April 23 and 24 this year. Go to http://www.latimes.com/extras/festivalofbooks or buy the Sunday LATimes with the event program (the weekend before usually and should be available at a big newsstand nation-wide) to see what authors you might want to sign a book for you. > Thanks for the tip on the verbage - sounds hostile though. Sounds like > I'd be caned. Nah, most San Franciscans are not especially hostile. (Despite Emperor Norton's proclamation, you will not be fined for saying "Frisco.") We have been known to giggle at tourists who pale at the sight of driving and parking on the steep hilly streets though, especially those who are trying to do so in cars with manual transmissions. Then there are the homophobes who *insist* on going to the Castro district... No matter what any tourist is/isn't into, most SF sights won't involve any hostility on the part of the natives or the tourists. You can get a visitor's kit to SF for free at https://www.sfvisitor.org/cgi-bin/webc.exe/st_main.html?catid=3 and LA's got its visitors' bureau site at http://www.lacvb.com Petra a n :) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Driving on the freeways from Southern CA to Northern CA, I average about 50 miles for every hour spent on the road. This is the average of freeway speeds and stops for necessities. This doesn't count rush hour traffic thru major metropolitan areas, but I do most of my driving at night. Is the Harry Potter costume exhibit still running at that fashion school in LA? But obviuosly once we looked into it we rolled on the floor laughing at ourselves because NO way could that be done in 7 days. We decided to suck up my fear and take a freaking plane. Muir woods seems to be our safest bet. If I am wrong and you all know of a closer place to LA to see a Redwood please let me know. Plus we're traveling with some ol deadheads that would like to see some of San Francisco. We really cant lose. Monterey bay became a stop because its on the way, have seals and hopefuly an amazing view. If there are other places that should be seen over it, again let me know. Like Pebble beach! I havent even mentioned that while all the way up there we wanted to get a "taste of sonoma". So this is why we all willing to travel so long. So with all this said. YOU GUYS ARE TRULY AMAZING. Thank you. we are still planning. Like we may drive through the night to get home via the 5! I am going to get the AAA maps tonight. Talk to our friends and give you all an update. Oh and we are tight due to spending a bulk of time in LA with family. So totally going to the garment district. My sis has already mentioned it. Oh CarolynKayta your extremely talented. We'll have to share artwork...I sew as well. Write in a day or so. Be Well All...thank you kindly, Oh yeah from Massachusetts!!! Be Well, Cathy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I did mention the Harry Potter costume exhibit at someplace like the Fashion Institute of Design and Technology? Ask your family about that, and see if the exhibit is still there. Redwoods - Big Trees, in the Santa Cruz mountains. Drive up scenic Hwy 1 from Monterrey along the coast to Santa Cruz, turn inland on scenic Hwy 17, and Big Trees is on your way to urban Hwy 101 or scenic Hwy 280, both in San Jose (consult your AAA travel book and your AAA maps). This would save driving across the Golden Gate Bridge and (paying) back again, unless you want to see San Francisco from across water. Sea lions - Pier 39 right in San Francisco. They started taking over an unused pier in the Fisherman's Wharf area, and, since they're a protected species, they couldn't be moved. Now they're a big tourist attraction there. Again, consult your AAA travel book. Sonoma Wine Country - consult your AAA book, and make sure you have a sober driver the whole way. Sonoma county police will be looking for you if you don't, and a drunk driving arrest is probably not the souvenir you want. Message-ID: <4.3.1.2.20050424010404.024ce730@...> If there was only one Harry Potter discussion panel at a fantasy/science fiction convention, what should that panel be about? Should it be about the costuming, or on some other specific topic, or speculation about what will be in books 6 and/or 7, or just a casual get together where general topics are discussed? October 7-9, 1005, is SiliCon, a f/sf convention in the San Francisco Bay Area. Because it is small-ish there would probably only be room for one Harry Potter panel on their schedule. Likewise, they don't have any budget for importing people related to the books or films (so J.K.Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe, etc., are right out). SiliCon might have a Harry Potter panel if (a) they knew what one panel would most benefit Harry Potter fans (=see paragraph above), and (b) it was felt that there would be a lot of support for such a panel (=loads of Harry Potter fans attending the convention and attending that panel). So what would be the best Harry Potter discussion panel subject, and the most make you want to be there? What was the best Harry Potter discussion panel you've ever been to? It might be better if each panelist gave a short prepared talk before the questions began -- the moderator could ask what they thought of each other's theories. Possibly my favorite HP presentation ever was attorney Susan Hall's talk at Nimbus on how the pathetic-ness of the rule of law in Wizarding Britain is related to the low point of rule of law in Muggle (historical) Britain at the time the Statute of Wizarding Secrecy sign-posted the separation of the two worlds. It might be possible to turn that into a panel on 'Law in Harry Potter's Wizarding World' (or 'Law and Government in Harry Potter's Wizarding World). Maybe one panelist presenting the major ways in which Wizarding Law differs from modern Muggle law, and Hall's points about it more resembles mid-18th century law. Another panelist presenting the idea (it is an essay on-line somewhere) that the rule of law has been suspended in Wizarding Britain under State of Emergency principles since the Statute of Wizarding Secrecy was passed. Another panelist on laws that may be inherent in Potterverse magic, such as magically binding contracts -- how can Harry be bound by someone else putting his name into the Goblet of Fire without his knowledge? What makes Unforgivable Curses unforgivable, and what makes Dark Magic dark? Someone pontificating on the tangle of international wizarding organizations, treaties, etc could be squeezed in here to increase the number of panelists. What should we take from Dumbledore's statement that Kreachur is what wizards have made him, and why does no one sympathize with SPEW? Are there bits mocking Thatcherism that non-UK readers just overlook? Wizards' prejudices regarding Giants, Goblins, Veelas: are they valid or just racism? What is the message about killing bad guys and capital punishment? Ordinarily I'd shy away from a topic that would get the red half of the population so riled up (calling the presentation "Muggle Political Correctness" is the *least* they would do) but here I'm just babbling. There are books declaring the Potter ouevre to be Christian or Stoic or Freudian or Alchemical allegory (as well as political allegory, above) and those who trace similarities to 19th century novels. The Los Angeles one is at: The Grove's Barnes and Noble 189 The Grove Drive On 1st St. Los Angeles, CA 90036 323-525-0270 The Orange County one (where I'll be) is at: Barnes and Noble at The Irvine Spectrum Irvine Spectrum Center (where the 5 and 405 meet) 81 Fortune Drive, Suite 123 Irvine, CA 92618 949-585-0233 You can keep tabs on what'll be happening at both events through upcoming.org (http://upcoming.org/event/23023 - that's the link to the Irvine party, just search for the LA one). You can also watch the LiveJournal communities, if you prefer: http://www.livejournal.com/~hp_losangeles and http://www.livejournal.com/~hp_orangecounty . It's a good idea to call ahead and reserve your copy - if they know more people are coming, they'll plan more fun activities. There will be representatives from Lumos (http://www.lumos2006.org/) and FictionAlley (http://www.fictionalley.org/) at the Irvine one, as well (*waves representatively*). Obviously, pretty much any large bookstore will have some sort of event, but we're trying to bring as many fandomers together as we can for a few spectacular parties rather than dozens of all right ones. Both of them should be fun opportunities to kill time with lots of fellow obsessees. Hope you can make it! Please come and join us! Wear your wizard/witch/professor/students robes if you have them. I have made some flyers to hand out,and will bring a cauldron full of various Harry Potter candies and prizes to give out. If you have any fun, creative ideas for our party, please let me know. It would be cool also to have a Tarot Card or Palm Reader present to give free readings to folks waiting in line,or perhaps some one could come as Professor Trelawney...im sure she would be a big hit! Are there any HP Conventions (I'm not looking to go to a Sci-Fi convention, rather something specific to HP) that anyone knows about? If there's not, I'm considering organizing one, but some of the panel discussions that I've seen for Accio 2005 seemed a bit random for me. Personally, I'm a purist and I don't care to expound too much outside of JK Rowling's statements and writings, so my personal preference would be to have panels discussing or debating points specifically bound by her writings. On several other listserves that I belong to....? Because the more times people are reminded and given easy opportunities to give, the more cash will be generated to relieve human suffering. Because it galvinizes people...because it sends a message that we are human beings involved with other human beings...because it would send a message that Harry Potter fans are part of a community of concerned people in the world. 18,000 people is a lot of folks. And I'm always astonished at the sheer number of appeals for help in disasters. I'm inundated with these and cannot escape them. So, after doing everything I can, especially for the friends of mine who live in the affected areas, I go online for a little relief of my own. I turn off the TV and go read about other things than human suffering I cannot begin to alleviate. For example, yesterday I had a long phone conversation with my daughter about Harry Potter, she just having finished HBP. She isn't on any Harry Potter lists, and had missed the part about the locket in the glass case in OOtP, and hadn't made any RAB connections. She reminded me that the ring/horcrux had been destroyed, which I had forgotten about. And we discussed how ambiguous JKR has always been about whether or not Snape is really on the side of the Good Guys. We had a lovely chat. Anyway, I read e-mail from groups I'm on that have nothing to do with disasters, and still I get disasters. How can I say, gently, to give it a break? The folks still in New Orleans cannot escape their predicament right now, but how much of their pain do I need to share? As in, making me hurt doesn't help them. As certainly as they need a break, so do I.
