He says he is being interviewed by some cable internet channel in January, which could be good publicity for the FAQs & the HPforGrownups group in general. I seem to recall that Melanie had some thoughts about where to host the FAQs, as did Heidi. Thoughts anyone? Unfortunately, I haven't made too much more progress with my remaining 3 FAQs since we last discussed it, but .... I *am* planning on buckling down with them in the next week. Really! Honest! Speaking of Melanie -- we haven't heard much from you lately. Hoping everything is okay with you. :--) Penny From sarvalsha at dellnet.com Fri Dec 1 07:45:45 2000 From: sarvalsha at dellnet.com (Margaret McNie) Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 23:45:45 -0800 Subject: [HP4GU-FAQ] Website for FAQs & Call to Melanie References: <3A272314.B06E84D6@swbell.net> Message-ID: <001401c05b6a$b8458a40$4ba21c3f@fxgg10b> I don't really have an opinion of where to place the FAQs, meaning wherever the majority of the group decides is o.k. with me. I'm also having problems getting down to work on the FAQs. Something about Christmas shopping which I'm normally almost done with by now but because of my vacation I haven't even started this year. And my mother moving in and having to help her find an apartment and a car. You know, the normal reason: not enough time in the day. I'm also trying to catch up on the messages, something I can do while I'm waiting for things to run at work. I was feeling pretty good because I was only about 1,000 messages behind until I realized that meant the messages I was reading were posted almost a month ago. However, someone did mention something I had been thinking about: publication of Peg's essays. I know publication of the FAQs was mentioned earlier and I was wondering if we couldn't incorporate her essays if she was agreeable. They really are incredible; if my FAQs come even close to hers in quality, I would be very happy. Perhaps this is something that has been discussed on the board and I haven't gotten to the messages yet but I just wanted to broach the subject while it was fresh in my mind. I love this idea - especially becase of the unity between what we're doing & what he's already done - a we do go off on a direction that is both more expansive, and somewhat more limited than he has - does this mean the Mysteries section will be a joint work between the 2 of you, like you'd mentioned on HP4GU? > > I seem to recall that Melanie had some thoughts about where to host the > FAQs, as did Heidi. Thoughts anyone? I think we should have it at our own domain name, instead of at something like a geocities subsite - a few months ago, I had registered THETHREEBROOMSTICKS.COM, and if this is what steve had in mind, we can transfer Technical Contact control of the domain name to him, and create an Entrance Page at http://www.thethreebroomsticks.com which people can use to jump off to his Index's front page, and to the front page for our FAQ. Maybe we should ask Starling (is she on hp4gu or just pou?) or one of our other Wonderful Artists to create a neat-looking design to go on that Entrance Page - and all our pages should have a link on them that you can click on to go back to the Entrance Page > Unfortunately, I haven't made too much more progress with my remaining 3 > FAQs since we last discussed it, but .... I *am* planning on buckling > down with them in the next week. Really! Honest! > Ditto. I should have time this weekend as Mom is watching Harry, but I will definitely be done by January 3, when i come home from my holiday break. But should we try to upload as much as we can now? we've got a lot done, and I think people would be happy to see some of it, even if it's not complete. Wouldn't it be nice to have this resolved before the US' presidential election is? What say you all? My term finishes today so I may have some spare time soon! Just need to catch up on some sleep first. 5 hours a night is just not enough for me. I have printed out the messages concerned with my FAQ's (up until about E-groups message 6100 - the point I got to when looking through the messages about a week ago) and will go through these next week while I am at home, have no / little computer access then as my computer is remaining in Oxford, and produce notes for writing my FAQ's. I am in Oxford (hence back on my computer), with little to do, for the week after next. I hope to have them all finished by the time I go back home on the 17th. Is there any cost involved in maintaining that? As for the FAQs, my chads are still being held up to the light by the court officials, but I should have a few ready, *finally*, in the next few days. I guess we should start uploading them somewhere to encourage us stragglers to get them finished... I agree as I think that could be a good motivator for many of us to go ahead & finish up. Here are my questions & thoughts: 1. We need to create an overall organization for the FAQs -- a logical "Table of Contents" or launch page or what have you. I'm willing to take a shot at that, unless someone else has more time &/or has an idea in mind for what it might look like. I assume we can then just leave the links "inactive" for the uncompleted FAQs? 2. We seem to have lost our HTML person (Melanie). Has anyone heard from her? I know she said she was going to have a busy workschedule in Sept/Oct, but then we really haven't heard *anything* in so long that I'm not sure if she's abandoned us or not. If she doesn't indeed surface soon, does anyone else have the technical expertise to take over this aspect of it? I do not. 3. I would like to edit them all for grammar, spelling, typos & the like before they get HTML'd. Once we have a plan for #1 & #2 above, I'll press forward with doing that. Although, I guess everyone should indicate to me which FAQs that have been uploaded are ready for me to edit & which ones you still want to make additions to. 4. Does anyone know (or can anyone figure out) how we might best go about editing the uploaded FAQs in the future? It's not an immediate problem, but I was just curious. For example, the wand order mystery. "Solved" in recent weeks it would appear. If I needed to go into the Mysteries FAQ & add a blurb about the "new" printings of GoF & what Bloomsbury wrote to Neil (AND I don't know anything about HTML), how hard (or easy) is it for me to maintain that FAQ? heidi tandy wrote: > With maintaining the registrations, no - I donated the cost of the > $14 in registration fees to The Cause, out of the goodness of my > heart. Are there any? Can he host our domain name? Uh .... I don't know. I will ask. I'll cc: you on that email to him Heidi as this business is all a bit Greek to me I'm afraid. I'm not entirely clear what you mean by him hosting our domain name, but I will pose the question. Penny -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am returning home tomorrow and will take the rest of the printed message with me to look through in the next three weeks. Hopefully I will then be able, on my return, to spend a day typing up all of my FAQ's. I have finished the notes for all the other FAQ's (up to about 500 messages ago and have gone through, but not taken notes from, the next 300 messages - the group has got very active again). I'm now turning more to mine, having only had sporadic time to work on them since mid-November. I'm anxious to knock mine out in relatively short order for obvious reasons. I just uploaded a draft "Table of Contents" to give our FAQs some structure. Please take a look at it & give suggestions for improvement. As you'll see, I couldn't think of an appropriate title for the section that includes the audio versions, movie, fanfiction, merchandise, etc. Hopefully, one of you will be able to come up with something snappy & appropriate. Heidi -- do we need to make any sort of trademark notation where I've italicized "Harry Potter"? Thanks to Paul for volunteering earlier to step in as the HTML'er for the FAQs. I do believe we may have lost Melanie. I haven't heard a word from her in months now. Unfortunately, her absence raises an even bigger issue perhaps than who will HTML all this stuff. She had volunteered to author 7 of the FAQs, and she didn't upload drafts of any of them before disappearing. Unfortunate since it's possible she did do some work on them that could be used by us in finishing them up. So .... here are the ones that she's down for - any takers? Audio Versions (short & easy folks) Chronology & Timeline Clothing (Wizarding World) Fan Clubs (again, short & easy) Houses of Hogwarts Predictions: GoF (this is really just a summary & ought not to be too difficult -- no new messages) Similarities between Voldemort & the Potters This is not as heinous as if one of us suddenly had to start from scratch with say Neil's FAQs (which are pretty meaty). Since I'm doing Hogwarts, I will take on the Houses of Hogwarts one as well. I would like to start the process of uploading what we can, as soon as we can. I think the response we'll get from the group could serve as a good motivator to go ahead & finish up. As you finish putting finishing touches on your FAQs, please let me know that you've uploaded what you consider to be a final version. If you've uploaded a FAQ to the FAQs folder already & you're happy with it right now, just let me know & I'll add it to my "to be proofed" list. I'm going to polish off the ones I've uploaded before continuing on with the ones in progress. Once I edit each of the ones we're happy with, I'll let Paul know to go ahead & HTML that particular FAQ. Paul -- Heidi & I have had some discussions with Steve of Lexicon fame re: where to host the FAQs. As I recall, we haven't reached any conclusion. But, Heidi may have had further conversations with him since I last heard -- any news on that front, Heidi?
