I could swap "Wizarding World: Economy" with General, as it isn't too huge. That way, you can do Economy now and I'll have one less to worry about for the moment. I've created a Word file of the relevant Yahoo messages on that topic, but haven't looked through them yet - I could send you that. Let me know. I have decided that, for the time being, that the FAQ's that I am writing will be based on the messages in E-groups up until #2500 (corresponds to near the end of September). Are we going to set an arbitrary cut off point for the messages we have covered in our FAQ's? Status report: I have done two FAQ's (animals and wands) I have gone through the Yahoo messages for all my other FAQ's, except the one on Harry. I have started looking through the E-groups messages (I have got as far as message 900). I still hope to have finished all of my FAQ's in the next couple of days (except the one on Harry which will be next weeks work!). I have decided to read through the messages (skim through would be more correct) as I have found searching difficult. The number of mistypes/misspelt names is amazing. I have found at least five different spelling for Voldemort and it becomes annoying when the search misses some messages out because of a mistake. In general, I think it's a good idea to have a cut-off point, but on some topics I'm doing, like 'Snape' and 'Spells & Charms' it would be hard to ignore all the recent posts. As for my progress - I'm aiming to get several FAQs done in the next few days. One thing I've just noticed is that the e-mailed eGroups messages don't have the message numbers on them. I've been collecting all the messages in my e-mail folder for a while now, so I could search them offline, but I hadn't noticed that before. What I may do, therefore, is put the date of each message as a reference. Any thoughts on this? Have I missed something? Message-ID: <8rq6f2+9upa@eGroups.com> Hi all - how's it hanging? I have a question about accents. I'm doing Character Accents and most of the assigned messages seem to relate to the potential accents of actors in the forthcoming film etc. I'm not sure whether to cover those messages under this FAQ or under the Casting/HP Movie FAQ, which is also on my 'to do' list. Any thoughts? I've made progress on McGonagall and Quidditch - will report back later. This is all taking much longer than I thought it would... *** I didn't comment before on the suggestion that we publish the FAQs as a book. Interesting as the discussions have been, I don't know that there is the basis for a book here, unless we go for something like the Star Trek "Nitpickers' Guides". It would be fun to produce a book on the adult perspective on Harry Potter, but I think there are too many holes in the club's messages to serve the purpose; IMO it would have to be an independent project. If only my printer worked more quickly then I could go to bed sometime soon! I have taken to printing out the messages concerned with my FAQ's as I can work from paper much more easily, and quickly, than from the computer screen. Unfortunately this corresponds to over 60 pages worth of message for just 3 of my FAQ's. I am worrying already over how long this will be for the FAQ on Harry (must start this soon). Basically I was sending this message to waste some time while the printer does its work. I am not far from completing another FAQ (predictions - second draft) and will be then be able to work through another 3 (Weasley's, Voldemort and Dursley's). I hope to have these done by the weekend (this depends on how much work my tutors set me - now that term has started I have to do this as in my free time!). That will leave Harry for next week, or the one after that (I seem to keep saying this - maybe it will be true soon). The printer is nearly finished - hopefully! Romance Pairings -- I need to add in message #s & a bit of discussion from the past few weeks. Basically done. 2. Wizarding World: Govt -- could finish this one with probably 2-3 hrs of concentration. On the agenda for tomorrow. 3. Fanfic -- Done. Just waiting on Ebony's final beta-read thoughts. 4. JKR -- *almost* done -- one more interview to toss in tidbits & then done. 5. Others -- not started (well, I have a bit on Hermione but not too much as yet). I figure the Adult v Childrens Lit one will not be hard or take much time. It will get done this week. I may go ahead & tackle (or at least start Hermione) this week also. The inconsistencies & mysteries one -- I will try to start this week as well. Hogwarts is becoming a nightmare (much like Snape) -- my boggart might even turn into a Hogwarts FAQ right now. I don't think Religion & HP will take too much time either as I don't think the group has discussed all that much on that topic. Hmmm . . . I may have a handful of others but if so, they are escaping me at the moment. Good luck with printing all that stuff Simon. I've had the recent brilliant idea of cutting & pasting the relevant messages into a word processing file & then working from that. Will see how that works. I've been doing both those things - cutting and pasting all the relevant messages into files and printing them out when I was doing the FAQs. I found it was easier to retype bits of messages than to shuffle the text around on-screen. I haven't even collected the messages on Snape yet, but I think I'll need about ten reams of paper to print them out. Nightmares for me are Snape, Spells and Charms and Casting/Movie. The rest should be done fairly soon (he lied, hopefully). My approach now is: -a short intro -summaries of the discussion topics (not necessarily questions/answers) with main message #s under each. I'm naming some club members and saying 'see also xyz FAQ' for cross-referencing. -a few appropriate quotes. -any references that might be required. Same here. My inbox is still a nightmare waiting for me to have some free time in which to clear it. Also I have forgotten how to be a student! I cannot write coherent lecture notes for the full hour of a lecture. I am, however, finding some time to write my FAQ's. I hope to get the Weasley FAQ finished tonight or tomorrow. I have none of the audio versions. The other possibility for accents is the Weasley family or Snape. During the work on the Weasley family FAQ I have found many different options. I am happy to put some of the Weasley family where do they live / what accents they have stuff into the FAQ I am doing. What I have in the FAQ (movie-related stuff excepted) relates mainly to Hagrid, the Weasleys and the Dursleys, with a bit on Snape and Krum and a few others. Some discussion relates to audio versions, and I'll probably include that where it raises a question about the accent the character ought to have (if that makes sense). If I don't cover Hagrid here, it'll be a bit thin... Probably most of the quotes should wait for the character discussion. I was basically assuming that we will end up creating a 'template' for the character that will remain unchanged in future updates of the FAQ's. The bit discussing the group discussions will be the only bit that then needs updating in the future. I have confused myself now and so will shut up. The FAQs would start with a brief character study followed by the Q&A section and some quotes, while the character summary for the board would be longer. I guess it depends on how you view it though. If an inconsistancy is *between* two or more books, rather than *within* one book, where does it go. For example, what about the Hagrid-returning-Sirius'-motorcycle question? It was SS/PS where he said he had to return it, but PoA where he said that Sirius told him he wouldn't need it anymore. There is no inconsistancy (on that subject, anyway) within either book, but there is between the two books. Does this make sense? Or maybe we can add some kind of Book-Spanning Mystery/Inconsistancy FAQ. You may have missed the discussion Melanie, but we all decided that since I'm doing 2 of the 4 books as far as Mysteries & Inconsistencies, maybe I should just do the whole thing. In light of your question, this makes even more sense. So . . . .if you want to send me what you have (or if you want to work up a basic doc on SS Mysteries & then send it) -- I'll incorporate it into my overall FAQ. I am just going through all the messages resulting from the online chats of last week - these messages are horrible to go through. Long, boring and mostly irrelevant (well at least to me) A quick status update: I am going through the message and will be updating the FAQ's I have competed up to whatever message number we have got to when I get to the end (4500 at the moment I think). I also hope to have the Dursley's and Lord Voldemort FAQ's completed by the weekend. I am as yet unsure if I will have the time to do this but they are not far from being done (just need to convert notes into a coherent discussion). After this I start on the Harry FAQ - there must come a time soon when I can put it off no longer! I am busy most of Friday and then away until late Sunday. So I guess I will not get much more done after tomorrow, I have to get some work done soon. Having taken most of the past 5 days off ill - I kind of have to show some willing! Especially as I seem to have passed the illness to a close friend who would normally go to all the lectures I was too lazy to attend! Update from me -- Heidi & I have had some discussions lately about this idea of turning the FAQs into a book, with proceeds to charity. We're both still pretty positive about it. She has made initial contact with the Muggles for Harry Potter organization, and we talked yesterday about maybe also donating some proceeds to Comic Relief (since there really isn't an equivalent UK Muggles for HP group that we know of). Heidi has also prepared a form of assignment for each of the FAQ writers to assign their rights in the FAQs over to me so that we can later compile this book. I will then later obviously assign all of these FAQ rights to a separate entity. But, Heidi & I decided we're nowhere near ready to start forming a corporation or partnership for this purpose. So, assigning to me seems the simplest way. She will have more detailed explanations I'm sure! :--) I'm also devoting some of this weekend to working on the FAQs (and yes, Carole, to getting Ch 10 of ASA squared away -- I promise!). :--) Penny -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I posted the "Adult v Children's Lit" one earlier today. That was supposed to be one of my "easy" ones -- so why, oh why, did it take *8* hours??! I thought it would be easy since I'm the only one who seems to post on the evil NY Times, etc. But, there was more to it than I thought once I got into it. I guess that's been pretty true for all of us & our FAQs, eh? I must say Charles McGrath (NY Times Book Review editor) comes off looking pretty darn bad in this FAQ. Our IP lawyer better look at it & be sure I haven't libeled the poor guy. Just kidding! I really just quoted him directly & well . . . he makes himself look pretty bad. I just love the quote about Scholastic & HP having had their day in the sun & now it's time to relegate them to a children's list, where they should have been all along. Okay. The point of this post is really a question about the Religion FAQ. We haven't discussed it much in the group. Therefore, it will be very short (yay!) and simple. I'm planning to add links to some articles from the HP: Culture & Religion website -- they have some great pieces by theologians for one thing. Question: the one area where I might add some meat into this FAQ has to do with the views/arguments of the religious right & anti-HP groups. Has that been covered (or will it be covered - she says hopefully) in the Book-Banning FAQ? If so, I will merely cross-reference. BTW, in searching for "Wicca" on the egroups messages, I discovered that catlady has an email address through wicca.net. So, her tons of messages were coming up in my search. I can only hope that searching "religion," "Christian," "pagan" & "Wiccan" will do the trick. :--) Penny From simon.branford at hertford.ox.ac.uk Mon Oct 30 00:09:18 2000 From: simon.branford at hertford.ox.ac.uk (Simon J. When I was searching for the chapter discussions earlier I was fine when finding ones with the numbers in numerical form, but if anyone had posted them in word form then I missed them - and this was with me searching for 'chapter' and then reading off the relevant numbers. I uploaded a file with all the relevant message numbers for the chapter discussion starts earlier and, in a fit of organization, remembered to leave room for the remaining chapters in the table. Neil wrote: "The FAQs would start with a brief character study followed by the Q&A section and some quotes, while the character summary for the board would be longer. Did we decide to go with the FAQ including a small character summary, which changes to a link to the relevant character discussion message when the character has been discussed or are the FAQ's to include an in depth discussion of the character (i.e. doing the character discussions for characters not yet discussed). I would prefer the first option, as it is less work to do (having said that most of my characters have already been discussed so I would have little else to do). My weekend provided little free time - something to do with being away. I hope to get all but my Harry FAQ done this coming week. I now have a couple of weeks that I have less organized stuff to do in. So should be able to spend more time on FAQ stuff. I would like to get them finished soon! Aaggh. *Now* I understand the dilemna. I was the one earlier arguing that the FAQ should be the more complete discussion. But see, my only character FAQ is also the character I'm summarizing for the chapter/character discussions. That's why I was thinking, oh, I'll just write up the Hermione FAQ & then I'll summarize it for the character discussion later. But, of course, for those of you doing FAQs on characters who haven't been discussed yet -- Yes! By all means, just leave a link to the later character discussion & leave the really in-depth reviews to whoever volunteered to do them. That makes infinitely more sense. Sorry for the confusion. > My weekend provided little free time - something to do with being > away. Hope you had a great time Simon! And, I hope Neil had a nice holiday in Madrid. Now I see why you were going for doing the character discussion as part of the FAQ. As you would have to do it any way, you may as well do it now (did not get the link the first time). By the time my FAQ's are done only Harry and Lord Voldemort (out of the characters I am doing FAQ's on) will not have been covered. I think I will leave that for someone else to do - both will probably be very long! Penny wrote: "Hope you had a great time Simon!" An interesting one. Having avoided the terrorist bomb that went off in central Madrid just before I left, I narrowly caught my plane (the resulting traffic jams were appalling) and on arrival back in Britain fought my way back home through the aftermath of some freak 'weather' that had closed down the entire south east rail system (tornadoes, floods and hurricanes in Britain? Yes, but no plague of locusts, thankfully...). Anyway, I have several more days' holiday due to me, so I can finally do some more FAQ work (in case you thought I was just pretending to take part in this project ). I'm actually glad to do something that doesn't involve travelling... I was thinking that Peg's essays should be included in the Files section of the club so they are easier to access. It would be nice to feature them somewhere. Although the essays have generated some discussion, many of the comments are along the lines of "another cracking essay, Peg," so perhaps they are better as stand-alone pieces.
