Is that > OK or should I have left it in Word form?" Simon also commented on this. Here's my bit. As long as the Word format is a 97-compatible format it can be read by Word 2000 (or on the Mac, I think it is Word 98 and Word 2001) and I think, Word 95. I've had trouble reading Mac originating files, but I think that was caused by the binhex compression. So, HTML or .doc should be okay with all. (I tested converting some of the most complex FAQs, such as the Hermione Granger FAQ, and got it down to a relative piece-of- cake. So that's the author's call, IMO.) I may have the version years messed up. I think the main difficulty was for the Word 95 users. And for that version, a converter to run on IBM compatibles is in the file section. A similar converter can be obtained for the Mac version. I'm (again) not sure of the year version. As far as multiple formats. Let's keep it to a single format. It will make it easier on the author and the converter. Should a problem occur, let's just solve it at that time. Question to those listening: Who are the converters? I'm assuming that I'm one. Steve is quiet, but I think is one. Any others? So they should either be in HTML or a document in any version of Word at or above Word 97 (actually, I think Word 96 was okay as well). Okay... > Question to those listening: Who are the converters? Okay... Excellent way to condense my 3 (or was that 4) sentences! I'll try to be better at that. I have a goal to improve my English usage. (See this month's Harper's magazine.) But this may take some time. As I was writing the Harry Potter FAQ early it struck me that the name FAQ may not be a very good description of its content. Most FAQ questions are much more general than the things covered in this document. This lead me to reflect that this is the case for the rest of my FAQs and I would guess is probably true for quite a few others, specifically the character based FAQs. So my question is: Is FAQ the right name for them or should we decide on something else? My FAQs cover most things discussed on that topic (I cannot not guarantee that some topics may have been missed). Everything is hardly an FAQ. Should we rename them something like Message Summaries, which is a lot more correct? Or just stick with the name FAQ as that is what we have been using for the rest of the time and the name longer standing members know? It is now completed for all the club messages and the first 9,000 on the group. I have about 15 pages of messages printed off to summarise and add to the FAQ and hopefully this will be done fairly quickly in the next couple of days. I finally feel as if I am getting somewhere on this and progress has for once been fairly rapid. Hopefully this rapid progress will continue for the rest of the FAQ work I want to get done soon. I have uploaded the updated FAQ and this will be continued to be updated as I work through up to the 15,000 message mark. Hope things are going well for the rest of you. Simon (the person with a big grin on his face at the moment) PS: If you feel like reading the Harry FAQ and commenting then please do so. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. But be warned that it is fairly long and possibly needs editing to make the sections follow better. I have had: Was Harry abused? Hitler and Voldemort comparisons Dangers of Internet chat rooms (in connection with the diary in CoS) Has anyone else had some other wonderful topics to write about in their FAQs? Or did I just manage to pick the FAQs with some of the most annoying and emotionally draining topics to write about? Or is it just a case of me being in a bad mood tonight? Guess after last weeks fanfic overload there was never going to be a hope that this week would be as good. Well the first stage of the Voldemort FAQ is half done. Will give up now and go to bed. I left it in Word (didn't HTML it through Word, which is the only way I know how to HTML a document). One question: I *cannot* find the source for the statement that Hogwarts is the only wizarding school for the UK & Ireland. I've searched through all the online chats with links in the Lexicon and those that I have printed out that are not linked in the Lexicon. If anyone knows this info, that would be great. Right now, Footnote 8 just says, "INSERT SOURCE." I'm going to try & update my other FAQs whilst waiting for baby to make her appearance, but in any case, I'm done, I'm done, I'm done!!!! I am *still* pregnant. This is the only day my dr. is not on-call, so we assumed she *would* come today, but alas, there is no sign of that yet (although the day is young yet). MY FAQS UPDATE: They are done!!!!! Hurrrah!!! They are all updated through the end of this week. I'm not completely positive that I've saved all the messages that might conceivably touch on the Mysteries FAQ, but I feel sure people will pipe up with updates once it's uploaded if I missed anything really big. They are all in Word -- I'm leaving it to someone who knows what they are doing to HTML them. FAQs QUESTIONS: 1. If I remember correctly, are we planning now on uploading the FAQs to our new website (rather than to the Lexicon site which is what we were doing as of a few mths ago)? 2. What needs to be done? a. If I understand right -- someone needs to design a Homepage for this website. Yes? b. Then, the FAQs Table of Contents needs to be created as a page, with a link on the Homepage. Yes? c. Then, the FAQs themselves are HTML'd. d. Then, the HTML'd FAQs are uploaded and the Table of Contents items become active links for those uploaded FAQs. FAQs that aren't done yet would just be inactive links. Do I have any of this right? I'm not much better off than Amanda as far as this sort of thing is concerned. 3. Has anyone taken "ownership" of this project? I know lots of us are busy just trying to wrap up writing our FAQs, being Moderators and/or List Elves &/or dealing with our outside lives. I know I don't have the time or expertise to be the one to assume the leader role & see it through. Is this something that Paul Kippes could do for us? I think he's volunteered to do this sort of thing in the past. Since I'm not sure if he checks this site very regularly, it might be worthwhile to email him personally if we'd like to see if he could take charge of this. 4. Updates. I'm planning to try & read the drafts that everyone else has uploaded today or tomorrow (assuming nothing else ..er.... interferes) & will post comments here when I do. We know we've lost Margaret, but I do think Caius' Dumbledore sketch can easily become a Dumbledore FAQ. I started skimming Mike's Neville FAQ yesterday but want to read it in detail today. It's great though! I love that your message #s are links -- wish I had known how to do that. Can we get updates (ETAs) from Ebony & Carole? 5. One general overall comment -- Be sure the FAQ has a byline from you (By Penny Linsenmayer) under the title. Be sure that there is a footer (or header) that says "Text copyright [copyright symbol] 2001 by HPforGrownups" -- it's in 8 pt typeface in my documents. I know Heidi is at Disney this weekend ... no need for you to reply to this until you get back Heidi! Okay, I think that's it.
