Not gonna have time to sleep, since I'm an idiot who hasn't exactly packed yet (train leaves at 4:35 am), but I've got plenty of time to sleep en route, and I finished (only just) 30000-30500, which is better than nothing, so I'm feeling pretty good. Thanks a ton, Kimberly, and have a nice trip. You're not going to miss the figure skating world championships, are you? I think it might be Sasha Cohen's time to win one for a change. ;-) And Elkins, I just *love* what you've done with the February colors. Very, er, *feminine* of you, really. These Valentine colors make me want to plant a big wet one on someone, so you'd all better take cover. ;-) OK, folks. Our deadline of February 1 has come and gone, so it is time to take stock. Can everyone upload their latest catalogues and note their progress on their block in the catalogue database? That will make it easier for me to figure out where we are and where we might go from here. Thanks! Cindy From cindysphinx at comcast.net Sun Feb 2 22:08:18 2003 From: cindysphinx at comcast.net (Cindy C. ) Date: Sun, 02 Feb 2003 22:08:18 -0000 Subject: January Progress Report Message-ID: Oh, you guys can really catalogue when you put your minds to it! At the end of 2002, we had completed a total of 10,132 messages. December had been an inactive month for the FAQ team, and we only catalogued a measly 2355 messages. But now look! It is the beginning of February, and we have completed. . . . . . . 16,338!!!! You know what this means, don't you? It means that we did almost three times as many messages in January as we did in December. In fact, January's totals are higher than any other month's totals! The bad news, though, is that we still have a little over 4000 messages yet to catalogue. Which means we have a decision to make. Option 1: We could continue cataloguing in February. If we worked at the same pace we did in January, we could finish in three weeks. Option 2: I could finish up by going through the remaining 4000 messages in webview and look for *really* Fantastic Posts. I wouldn't read or catalogue everything ?- I would look for posts that really were special, either because of the subject matter or (more likely) because of the author. I think I could finish up fairly quickly, but the final product would reflect my interests and biases to some extent. Of those two choices, I think I'd prefer just going through quickly and making note of the truly Fantastic Posts rather than extending the cataloguing period for all of us. Depending on how fast I work, I might even be able to catalogue the messages from 41,000-51,000 as well. In the meantime, you all could begin writing FPs. What do you all think? I have to be honest; I think that at a measley 1,490 posts, I've burnt out. The 'Missing 24 hours' is making me want to e mail BBoy off list with a comment along the lines of 'listen you stupid idiot. Take a light plane over the Irish Sea at night in a storm and THEN tell me flying a motorbike (with a small baby) over it would be a great idea. 'House Elves are a metaphor for slavery' makes me whimper. Then I start banging my head on the oven door. The discussion over the heraldry of the Gryffindor shield and its similarity to the Scottish flag reversed is causing hysterical colour blindness.[sorry Eloise and Amanda]. I could probably suffer my way through the last 10 posts to bring it up to a round 1,500. But I don't think I could face continuing through February. > > Option 2: I could finish up by going through the remaining 4000 > messages in webview and look for *really* Fantastic Posts. I relied heavily on it when doing research for my "Anatomy of a Rift" post. Notice that I use lots of quotes from listmembers -- I got them all from using the catalog! I think their words made a great contribution to the post (not to mention the fact that bboy_mn had already included lots of direct quotes from the book, so I just had to cut and paste). :D Also, some of the really good stuff I got wasn't from the Fantastic Posts that Cindy is now ferreting out. It came from shortish answers in the middle of something that might seem kind of trivial but for my purposes was essential, notably Jo Serenadust's observations that Ron is a saint in Books 1-3. Her bit about Ron's reaction to the Firebolt is priceless -- much better than I would have put it -- and the fact that it was an observation made independently of what I was doing made it more persuasive, IMO. Even though finding the more prominent Fantastic Posts is what the FAQs are all about, the cataloging of the lesser content has its uses, as I have discovered. So I vote for eventually going back and cataloging everything, or nearly everything, just as we have been doing. --Dicey, who thinks we'll need to shut down the list for a year just to catch up From porphyria at mindspring.com Sat Feb 15 05:07:34 2003 From: porphyria at mindspring.com (Porphyria) Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2003 00:07:34 -0500 Subject: Fwd: An update needed on FAQ page Message-ID: <6485C194-40A3-11D7-83EB-000393465128@mindspring.com> Today was 'pick on the FPs day.' It's not an organizational outline so much as a list of topics, which I did based on a quick review of what's in the catalogues. (BTW, the catalogues were very easy to use -- I just used the sort function, which allowed me to search several topic terms at once. So I can get started without waiting for Dicey's master catalogue. For some reason, though, I couldn't get my filter to work.) I'm planning to start on the justice side, and Porphyria will start with the Dark Mark. Penny suggested combining Government with this FP. We're thinking about whether that makes sense. It fits with the Justice side well, but not as well with the DE side. I had somewhat envisioned the pairing of DEs, Aurors and justice as suggesting a cops and robbers flavor, and there's a lot more to the government FP than law enforcement. I went through and deleted them all. When compiling the thing, I ended up having to export it to text-only, then import it as a new file because there was something wrong with it -- it wouldn't let me sort even two consecutive rows. So whatever weird stuff might have been in the files due to different versions of Excel, those were purged when I exported to text (tab-separated). To look for stuff, first you position your cursor somewhere in the first row of terms (just one cell), then hit the sort button. Or, you select the whole table, then select "Data | Sort" from the main menu and configure it to sort by the B column. Now everything is sorted alphabetically by the terms in the first term column. You can either scroll down until you find the desired term, or you can hit CTRL + F to call up the "Find" dialog box. You'll need to do this three times, once for each column. I know I said I wasn't going to upload new versions of the whole_enchilada.zip, but that was before I knew I'd have to *take out* something from the original, a wholly different situation than adding stuff. Just FWI, this second version has the duplicate 35000s removed, the last 88 of the 37000s added in, and I've also done some minor editing to make the terms similar, such as changing "werewolves" to "werewolf" and "Sirius" to "Black". Well, there had to be something, didn't there........;-) There is (or at least in the first version there was) a solid line separating the message numbers from the topic terms. The sorting's fine, but (at least in Works), you can't then select rows from *all* the columns at once to paste them into a new document. In making my own etymology catalogue, I had to copy and paste the message numbers separately, which wasn't a big deal, but did take several attempts and mistakes before I got them properly aligned. If for any reason Excel-users want to use my or Catherine's original catalogues, the trick is to open it by right clicking and then selecting Excel when asked what you want to open it as. I have to do the reverse (open as a Works document) to use the Whole Enchilada. ~Eloise [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From dicentra at xmission.com Mon Feb 24 02:38:53 2003 From: dicentra at xmission.com (dicentra63 ) Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 02:38:53 -0000 Subject: Using the Whole Enchilada In-Reply-To: <1c1.581dcd1.2b8a8abf@aol.com> Message-ID: --- In HP4GU-FAQ at yahoogroups.com, eloiseherisson at a... wrote: > Well, there had to be something, didn't there........;-) > > There is (or at least in the first version there was) a solid line separating > the message numbers from the topic terms. If you want to get rid of that line, position your cursor in the cell B2. Then go to Window and select Unfreeze Panes. If Unfreeze Panes isn't in Window, look for it in the other menus. > > The sorting's fine, but (at least in Works), you can't then select rows from > *all* the columns at once to paste them into a new document. I have to do the reverse (open > as a Works document) to use the Whole Enchilada. I discovered that I could open Eloise's document from Excel 2000 but not Excel XP. Beats me why. Excel XP couldn't recognize it as an Excel doc. I had to save it out in Excel 2000 and resave it as a native Excel doc, then mail it to my home computer (which runs XP) before I could open it. Microsoft is our friend. --Dicey, choking on that last statement From eloiseherisson at aol.com Mon Feb 24 07:16:08 2003 From: eloiseherisson at aol.com (eloiseherisson at aol.com) Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 02:16:08 EST Subject: [HP4GU-FAQ] Re: Using the Whole Enchilada Message-ID: <121.1ee21638.2b8b20b8@aol.com> In a message dated 24/02/2003 02:40:37 GMT Standard Time, dicentra at xmission.com writes: > You can't select the row numbers (not the number column), thereby > selecting the whole row? While holding down the Shift key, click the last row that you want. All the rows between the first and the last will be selected as well. Cut or copy, then paste where you want. Be careful, though: if you're pasting to empty rows, you're OK, but if you want to insert the rows, you'll have to select "Insert | Rows"; otherwise, the pasted rows will overwrite the existing rows. If the rows are not contiguous, select the first row by clicking its number. While holding down the CTRL key, click the rows of all the other rows you want. Only the rows you click should be selected. Copy or cut and paste as usual. Hope that helps. --Dicey From cindysphinx at comcast.net Mon Feb 24 21:11:23 2003 From: cindysphinx at comcast.net (Cindy C. ) Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 21:11:23 -0000 Subject: Using the Whole Enchilada In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Quick reminder, everyone. The lovely Porphyria created a file some time back explaining how to format your FP so everything will work later. Now is probably the time to review it. Cindy
