Not a response to your specific question, but along these lines: 1. Did you/we ever make any decision on "volumes" of FAQs? Books 1-4, and now we start Book 5? Because it suddenly strikes me that the OoP FAQs that the main list has compiled are a *really* handy start to the new FAQ volumes. 2. Message-ID: <1057267798.35B82897@s5.dngr.org> Due in large part to the smashing success of ootp, both the hpfgu faqs and fictionalley's site have been innundated this past month, so over the weekend we will be moving both to a new server, thanks to the remarkable talents of Paul Kippes and his technoteam. This shouldn't cause any interruption in anything but we cannot make any changes to the faqs or the page at hpfgu.org.uk this weekend at all. If something needs changing, do it friday or wait until tuesday, please. Questions? Ask paul! Heidi, keeper of the servers Ps - for those on faq who don't know, fictionalley has dedicated servers and host the hpfgu site on it. What probably happened is an email address consolidator, who sells addresses to spammers, randomly chose your address as the 'sent from' spoof-address. Yahoo is well aware of this, and would realise that the ip address is either affiliated with a known spammer-address or is one that you have never used, and in fact couldn't've been using when the spam was sent. But if you want to talk directly to someone at yahoo, let me know and I'll give you a number there that might be useful. I wouldn't go as far as to call them "fantastic" but they were interesting and thought provoking (at least for me). How "fantastic" does a post have to be to be considered a "Fantastic Post"? -Gail B...hoping to to add some pics to the photo section _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I'm getting Halloween colors for some reason. Don't get me wrong; they're absolutely lovely. ;-) Tom added: Now I'm confused. It *was* (sort-of) red white and blue. Now it's definitely orange. So confused... Derannimer writes: Oh, see. . . I got Cindy's message in my in-box and hadn't realized that you had already changed the colors, Tom; I went over to see if Cindy's decorations were still up, and to see if they really looked as hideous as all that. When I saw that the list was red-white-and-blue, I assumed that no one had changed it yet. You mean it was *brighter* than that? *That* was toned down? Tom replies: Oh, thank goodness I'm not losing my mind! Yeah, it was SO much brighter. If you check out the color options, be sure to take the third red from the left for the 'left' and 'header' sections, and the eighth box (blue) from the right for the subheader... and assorted softer reds and blues in between. ;-) Powerful stuff. Anyways, I really like the Halloween colors, though, so I say we keep 'em. -Tom From thomasmwall at yahoo.com Tue Jul 22 03:52:54 2003 From: thomasmwall at yahoo.com (Tom Wall) Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 03:52:54 -0000 Subject: What's our responsibility, anyways? In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I was taking a gander through all of the various stuff that's connected to the HPfGU portkey, and started to wonder: exactly what are we updating, now, anyways? There's a 'Topical Essay' link from the portkey which tried to take me to the old lexicon site and is now invalid - didn't this take us to Fantastic Posts before? Does it have something to do with moving the servers at all? There's the VFAQ from the HPfGU admins, which I found at URL: http://f2.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/sKgcPw7N7enSr6rCVOdU5DFb8xUbVNanQHFN- FjvM2xznPTHw1fa2EvKo9HIkk_mmav52sQGS5gcIDSpQBc5OBvaspo/Admin% 20Files/VFAQ.htm There's 'Fantastic Posts and Where to Find Them,' at: http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/ And there's Hypothetic Alley, too, at: http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/hypotheticalley.html Reason I ask, is what we have to update depends a lot on what we should get to first... should we spend time updating all of the existing FAQ's first, or should we get to work on new ones fast? Or try to do both? And what about Hypothetic Alley, too? ;-) -Tom From abigailnus at yahoo.com Tue Jul 22 16:34:35 2003 From: abigailnus at yahoo.com (abigailnus) Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 16:34:35 -0000 Subject: Roll Call In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Hi. I'm back. Finished OOP on Sunday and have been slowly reacclimating into fandom ever since. I finally, for example, got to read that A.S. Byatt article everyone's so up in arms about. I also went to the main group website, thinking that I'd at least get an idea of what I had to catch up to. My first clue that I might not be up to the task was the addition of 2000 members in less than a month. Then I checked the message count. I seem to be about 10,000 messages behind. Help. So, I'm not exactly back. I'd like to reread the book. I'd like to get at least an idea of the ideas that have been floating on the list. And, oh yeah, I do still have one last final on Thursday which I really ought to prepare for. I'm signed up for the Harry FP, which, not at all unexpectedly, is going to have to be rethought quite a bit. At this moment I have no coherent thoughts whatsoever. Hopefully by the weekend, as I decompress, I'll get a chance to formulate some ideas. Any other Hufflepuffs out there who are ready (or near-ready) to get to work? Heh... :: Dressed in black and carrying automatic weapons, the filkers bust into Kimono's Sushi Bar. Several people screamed in terror and a woman fainted as they quickly took up strategic positions around the room. Caius, who wore a red beret, jumped upon the stage and wrenched the microphone from the young patron who stood there. "Everybody sing along, and nobody will get hurt!" :: Well...it wasn't quite like that. We got permission from the manager to sing our stuff, but we had competition from the Muggles. It was noisy, and between the chatter of the crowd and the music from the loudspeakers, it was hard to hear our own lyrics being sung. I must admit, that I had more fun hanging out in our room with all my fellow filkers, singing acappella. In fact, I would have to say that my whole Nimbus experience was like that. Yeah, it was cool, to be at Disney World, and to have all the bells and whistles of the convention...but the best thing was to meet all these people, see their faces and get to know them live and in person. I feel bad that I wasn't able to spend more time with them...oh, Phyllis! We never got to dance the hustle! Like Melody, I didn't attend many of lectures. Lilac told me a little about the R/H - H/H Shipping panel, how it got rather heated. Heh...the R/H Shippers had some cool t-shirts printed up....er...Derannimer...you *are* R/H, aren't you? I went to the Snape panel and came to the conclusion that the character of Snape is too ambiguous right now to draw any definite conclusions about anything. Saw Lexicon Steve give his presentation with a lot of overhead projections, and Dicentra gave one - TBay style! But the best, best, best speaker that I attended was this John Granger, author of "The Hidden Key to Harry Potter: Understanding the Meaning, Genius, and Popularity of Joanne Rowling's Harry Potter Novels". I was unfortunate that I was only able to attend the last 15 min. of his speech, but what I heard gave me goosebumps...I kid you not! Especially the bit about alchemy. If you haven't picked up his book yet, I recommend it highly. You hear that, Cindy? Phyllis is helping to organize a Harry Potter convention in Ottawa in 2004, and I met Judy Serenity who really would like to have a convention for HP4GU people only. I think that would be a cool thing! All in all, Nimbus was a wonderful experience and...man! The organizers (Gwen and Heidi and their crew) really did a lot. I was impressed. I'll be posting my photographs next week on OTChatter and I'll tell some more stories then, okay? -Gail B. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8.
