So, whatever we do, we don't close this group down. Otherwise we might lose 512MB that we'll need someday. If we want to change its function to an archive group, it might be worthwhile moving. But is there anything we're likely to do here that will need an owner's permission? Or are we just trying to make things tidy? I don't know if Porphyria has the power to invite in new members or do much of anything. Porphyria? Penny is a Mod, but I don't know what her powers are and can't check because I'm not a Mod. If we do decide to add some new folks, I guess we'd be looking for folks who write well and have showed sustained interest in the list. Unfortunately, I haven't been keeping up with new members as much as I'd like on the main list, so I don't have a whole lot of suggestions. The people who occur to me as good candidates are: Derannimer Veronica Abigail Charis Julia Darrin After that, I'm drawing a blank. So, should we invite some folks, and if so, who? I'm thinking that actually we may not be in a position to update effectively for a while. OoP is going to provide a lot to talk about and if we revise the old ones too soon, then we are going to have to do it again in the near future. Leading on from what Cindy was saying the other day about noting significant posts, however, if all the FPs (new or old) have someone assigned to them, then these individuals *could* note new posts relevant to their own topics as we go along. It would take some discipline and commitment and might well require additional help, but it might be less effort in the long run. ~Eloise [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From Ali at zymurgy.org Mon May 26 19:51:07 2003 From: Ali at zymurgy.org (Ali) Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 19:51:07 -0000 Subject: New Members? Ah, good point. Let's see. From memory: Lupin FP -- Amy/Elkins Quidditch FP -- Ali Malfoy Family -- Heidi Hagrid -- Kimberly and Pip Character Names -- Eloise DEs/Aurors/Justice -- Debbie and Porphyria I seem to recall Dicey had something on her plate, but I don't remember what it might have been. FPs that need writing would include everything without a little star indicating the FP has been written. OoP is going to provide a lot to talk >about and if we revise the old ones too soon, then we are going to >have to do it again in the near future. Oh, I agree. I think that the posts immediately after OoP is released will be, er, not very insightful or fantastic. I figure we can all play on the list for a few weeks, at least, before we'll be in danger of missing all that many truly Fantastic Posts. Eloise: > Leading on from what Cindy was saying the other day about noting >significant posts, however, if all the FPs (new or old) have >someone assigned to them, then these individuals *could* note new >posts relevant to their own topics as we go along. That's true, and that's a good point. But that would require each FP writer to keep up with the main list on his or her own subject. On the other hand, if each of us just generally keeps our eyes open for any post on any subject that strikes us as "fantastic" and enters the post into a database here, then we'll probably miss far fewer terrific posts. That said, I don't mind assigning out the FP projects now -- it certainly can't hurt. Ali wrote: >What about Jo Serenadust and Phyllis (Erised...) Oh, yeah. Good catch! And the dishwasher. And the washing machine. And *bathe.* So I took the opportunity to draft an invitation to send to whoever we decide to invite. What do you think? Suggestions and comments? Cindy *************************** Hi, [Wide-Eyed Prospective FP Team Member], Now that OoP is just around the corner, the "Fantastic Posts" team is trying to gear up and get back to work. You remember the "Fantastic Posts And Where To Find Them" page, don't you? Sure you do! That's the collection of essays that directs new members to some of the best the main list has to offer. The "Fantastic Posts" are at: http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/ Gorgeous, isn't it? Anyway, we're expecting lots of posting on the main list after June 21, and we're hoping and expecting that many of those posts will indeed be *Fantastic.* We'll need to update the existing "Fantastic Posts" essays and write a whole bunch of new ones. In fact, we *still* don't have an essay devoted to *Harry Potter* himself! Yes, we have our work cut out for us, no doubt about it. And that's where you come in. We'd love to have you join the "Fantastic Posts" team. We can't offer you a salary. Or an impressive title. Or an office. Or a secretary. Or benefits. Or perks of any kind, really. But we can offer you the chance to work on whatever essay strikes you as most interesting. And you'll be in fine company ?- right now, the active team members are: Ali, Catherine, Cindy, Dicentra, Eileen, Elfundeb, Elkins, Eloise, Heidi, Joy, Kimberly, Penny, Paul, Pip!Squeak, Porphyria, Sheryll and Tabouli. And boy, do we have fun! We have so much fun, in fact, that the time seems to fly right by! Our work consists of reading the main list and spotting posts that are funny, clever, thought-provoking or otherwise memorable. Then we write essays on various subjects or characters in the Potterverse. We edit each other's essays, and we do things like HTML coding and link checking. You can put in as much or as little time as you like, and you can work on an essay on your own or with a group. We're very flexible about most everything. So what do you say? Would you like to join the "Fantastic Posts" team? Let me know and I'll send you an invitation to join. I was ill for a while, and Cindy and Elkins wouldn't let me even think about cataloguing and writing FPs, but now, I want to get back to it. I want the Weasley Family FAQ post-OotP. Any objections? And can we have an FAQ for the Crouches? It'd be really short, but I'd dearly love to see it. Please? I know the Aurors and Justice FAQ covers some of it, but not all. Eileen, with half a mind to write the Crouch FAQ today, and present it before anyone can object to it being irrelevant From cindysphynx at comcast.net Thu May 29 18:15:17 2003 From: cindysphynx at comcast.net (cindysphynx) Date: Thu, 29 May 2003 14:15:17 -0400 Subject: [HP4GU-FAQ] Emerging from the Shadows In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <001401c3260e$421de940$0202a8c0@home7u2lvwxmqw> Hey, there, and welcome back, Eileen! Glad you're feeling better. And it seems that you have lots of energy, too. Most excellent! Frankly, if you want to whip out a Crouch Family FP before OoP, I think that would be just fine, myself. And I think updating the Weasley Family FAQ is all yours, as no one has indicated an interest in it just yet. Thoughts? Date: Fri, 30 May 2003 14:57:11 -0000 Subject: Revising HPfGU -- A History Message-ID: Hey, Currently, "HPfGU-A History" contains the following discussion of list administration: "Toward the end of 2000, Penny needed help moderating the list due to increasing membership. (See Appendix A for HPfGU Monthly Message Volume.) She deputized the first Magical Moderator Team - Neil Ward, John Walton, Jim Flanagan, and Jeralyn (Voice Lady) - on January 4, 2001. Over the years, the Moderator Team added Catherine, Cindy C., Kelley, Elkins and Parker, gained and lost Melanie (Ravensclawlady), Aberforth's Goat and Amy Z, and lost Jim and Jeralyn." How about if we keep this the way it is and add the following bit to the end? "In early 2003, the Moderators, Elves and Geists decided to change the manner in which the HPfGU lists are administered and adopted a system that did not rely on the existence of Moderators. Instead, responsibility for running the lists is now shared across the team of administrators." Edits? Comments? I Can't *See!* Message-ID: Hey, I was about to get started sending out invitations, and it occurred to me that I can't easily get the e-mail addresses of the people on our list because I don't have Mod privileges on the Main List. I can only see the beginning of the addresses. Can someone gather the e-mail addresses and post them here? Also, if anyone else wants to do any of the invites, that's fine. Just post here about what you're doing. Also, I haven't scrubbed the archives yet. I doubt there's anything at all worth scrubbing, but I do mean to check on that.
