Message-ID: <9k7rtj+2rlf@...>
Announcing the Public Beta Test of FictionAlley
At 10pm Eastern Standard Time on July 31, 2001, in honor of Harry
Potter's 21st birthday, the FictionAlley Writers' Consortium
Alohomoras a public beta test of three of the FictionAlley
neighborhoods. In other words, the other 3 ficsites sites are up!
AstronomyTower.org adores romances (including an AU ficlet from
Cassandra Claire and a fic for Harry's birthday from Rhysenn),
TheDarkArts.org is filled with angst, action/adventure and mystery
fics, and Riddikulus.org allows you to chase away the boggarts with a
bit of humor.
For the past ten days, Schnoogle, the novel length FictionAlley
archive, has been entertianing readers around the world with its wide
variety of exclusive fics; today, AngieJ's final chapter of Trouble
in Paradise was added to the site.
FictionAlley is also accepting fanfic submissions; contributors are
asked to visit the submission guidelines on the site or at
http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/fictionalleywriters.
FictionAlley features review boards, hit counters, a message board at
FictionAlley Park, and Professor McG's Fanfiction Primer. Also, on
September 1, ArtisticAlley will have its first showing.

Announcing a brand new website on the HP list: Birds
of a Feather. It's a site about the Ravenclaws
because, as much as Harry and co. are luvvable, us
Ravenclaws need a site all our own. The site's kinda
smallish, but it is a baby site.
Also, in "Tales from the Quill" you will find the
title fic, "Birds of a Feather." It follows the
Ravenclaws of Harry's year. If you don't want to surf
around, the link is:
http://www.geocities.com/ravenclaw_princess/boaf-flight1.htm.
Sorry, it's not up at ff.net or fictionalley.org yet,
but when it goes up there you will be told.

Poul Anderson died at home near midnight, Tuesday July 31, 2001. He
had
come home that day to receive hospice care after kidney failure
brought
on by prostate cancer.
His last day was spent with family and friends. He enjoyed his final
meals, and especially a Jubilaeum akvavit and Carlsberg beer.
He was pleased and warmed by the many e-mails he received from friends
and strangers around the world who had been touched by his writing.
Special thanks go to Diana Paxson, Geoff Kidd, and Gerry Nordley, who
helped greatly in his homecoming.
A memorial gathering is planned for 2pm, Saturday, August 4 at the
First Unitarian Church of Oakland, 685 14th Street, Oakland.
Following
that, a small wake will be held at Greyhaven.
Karen Anderson writes:
Integer Vitae
In Poul's last hours, messages poured in from strangers who told how
they had learned honor and courage from his writing, courtesy and
kindness from his personal example. Such tributes cannot be awarded,
but only earned.
He led his life without expecting to gain rewards or escape punishment
in some other existence. He knew that good and evil arise from human
nature, and believed it is our duty to choose the good. He was, in
the
words of the poet Horace, "integer vitae sclerisque purus" -- a man of
blameless life and free of crime.

Hi all!
Lurker and Sears employee Abbie here, urging everyone
to go out and give their hard-earned cash to my
delightful employer.
Sears is doign a giveaway -- free copy of the movie
poster with purchase of any Harry Potter item -- go to
the children's department. The tee shirts are all
kiddie sizes but (at least in my store) there's also
socks, baseball caps, and backpacks. And maybe if you
beg, you'll get one without buying anything. ::looks
innocent::
They are also doing a contest --
Grand Prize -- trip to London for four to see the
world premier (4D/3N, airfare, and 10k spending cash)
First Prize -- over 300 copies of Harry's Gryffindor
scarf from the movie
There are entry forms in every store. Good luck --
and since employees are ineligable, if anyone on the
list wins, could you bring me with you?
And if there are any Long Islanders on the list, stop
by the East Northport store (Jericho Tpke) and say hi
and I'll put a poster aside for you ;-)

Message-ID: <9kpcqc+8vjb@...>
I was browsing JWFan.Net, a John Williams fansite, when I noticed
that they've set up a new, reorganized Harry Potter section. This
section has lots of information about the soundtrack, including the
CD release date of Oct. 30, comments from Williams, recording session
info, reports and opinions on released music, etc. They've even got a
links page with a link to HPforGrownups! Here's the link to the main
page:
http://jwfan.net/
The HP news item should be near the top.
Also, the Leaky Cauldron has a link to an MP3 of a four-minute
concert version of "Hedwig's Theme". Williams conducted this at his
recent Tanglewood concert. You can hear the occasional cough and
applause at the end of the MP3, but it comes across pretty clear,
albeit a bit soft.
http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/
Again, the MP3 link should be near the top of the recent news section.
Incidentally, the MP3 comes from a JWFan.Net message board. The
reviews over there are all positive. They really know Williams and
his music and they seem to be very enthusiastic about what they've
heard.

There is a new book out called the Harry Potter Poster Book (or
something like that). It is a collection of stills from the movie.
There are some nice shots -- Flitwicks classroom, Gringotts,
Dumbledore, and a close look at Crabbe and Goyle (one is tall, the
other is wide, both look nasty). This book is not, IMO, worth the
money to buy but is fun to look at.

Message-ID:
Second time of sending, sorry. Email is floozy today...
I've just put up a database in the Main List's Database section which has a
bunch of blank spaces for us all to fill in our ideas, hopes, dreams, likes
and dislikes about what we can do to make the groups of HPFGU an enjoyable
place for everyone, new or old. The direct link is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/database?method=reportRows&tbl=9
Add your thoughts, no matter what they are (except, perhaps, for "burn all
people who can't spell right all the time at the stake"). The Moderators
*need* to hear them in order to make informed decisions about the future of
the group.
Yours, for the Moderator Group,

Message-ID:
Hi all, John here for the Mods again.
With the recent arrival of the wonderful fanfiction archive resource at
FictionAlley.org (run partially but in no way entirely by HPforGrownups
grownups) to supplement the existing HP-related fanfic archives, the
HPforGrownups Moderators have decided that, for reasons of space in our
Files Section, we're going to ask everyone to please move their fanfic to
FictionAlley.org or elsewhere (HP_FanFiction or SugarQuill, for example).
You've got a couple of weeks before we start sending out emails to say
"we're going to take this off the site", so the sooner the better!
FictionAlley is a great, HP-fandom only Fanfiction site, which has four
houses: Schnoogle.com for novel-length fics, TheDarkArts.org for
angsty-darkficcy-types, AstronomyTower.org for those lovely lovely romances
and Riddikulus.org for humor and comedy. Stop by today -- no need to
register to read or discuss HP fanfiction, and uploading as an author is
REALLY easy!
Cheers,
--John

(Yes, I know that says SOT08. That's because there's a prologue in addition
to seven chapters :D)
There are surprises in store for all our characters. Drama, danger and
driving for Draco (our narrator this chapter), revelations and relocations
for Ron, Harry horror for Hermione and handcuffs for Harry. Oh, and much
more mention of Magids. Alliteration always abounds!
Again, that's

Message-ID: <004c01c12e4e$cf8aee40$de3570c2@c5s910j>
UK television station Channel 5 is screening a profile of JK Rowling at 8pm
BST tonight (26 Aug). It's called "JK Rowling and The Harry Potter
Express".
Here's what Channel 5's press release has to say about it:
"At 8.00pm the documentary J. K. Rowling examines British author Joanne
Katharine Rowling, who has created a multi-million publishing sensation with
her Harry Potter books. Loved by children and adults alike, everyone knows
her name. In J. K. Rowling 5's cameras track the story of her life, from her
hometown of Bristol to Edinburgh, where as a destitute single mother she
spent day after day in cafes creating the world of Hogwarts magical boarding
school. We speak to fans and meet the inspiration behind the Potter family,
headmaster Dumbledore and the evil Snape and hear the story of how she
became the world-wide success she is today."
http://www.channel5.co.uk/
The channel has also just screened a children's version of the quiz show
"100%," in which three children answered 100 questions on Harry Potter.
They got some very easy questions wrong. I'm disgusted!!
I've dropped the channel an e-mail, asking if we can have a transcript of
the JKR profile show... well, you never know.

Dear members,
I've got a couple of things in this message. Thanks in advance for reading
it.
HPFGU'S FUTURE
We're having some great responses from those folks who have hopped over to
the database. Please, if you haven't gone there yet, or even if you have and
have thought of something else, leave us a message. It's completely
confidential, no member names or anything are shown. It's vitally important
that you, the members, tell us where you want this group to go.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/database?method=reportRows&tbl=1
0
You should also (if you haven't already) make your views known about where
you think discussion about the upcoming movie should go in our Movie List
Poll:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/surveys?id=729738
It's currently tied, so get voting if you haven't already!
LIST ELF OPPORTUNITIES
Do you have what it takes to be an elf? HPFGU is seeking new List Elves.
List Elves assist new members of HPFGU in cooking, cleaning and list
maintenance. Oh, yeah, and they welcome new members with a personal offlist
email. List Elves should be the type of HP fanatics who can not go for more
than a few hours without checking this group, and who are willing to spend
far more time than they should thinking about HP-related activities.
Like all elf positions, this one is without any sort of compensation except
the spiritual satisfaction of being a good elf. However, there are some
benefits:
1. You get to join the HPFGU-Moderators group and participate in all of the
HPFGU policy-making discussions. In addition, this group frequently has
other exciting discussions, such as a current exciting thread on Minerva
McGonagall's bra size.
2. We can't think of any other benefits.
Email the Mods @ hpforgrownups-owner at yahoogroups.com if interested, etc.
Only those with names easily changed to end in -y should apply ::grin::
LIST ETIQUETTE & QUESTIONS
Couple of things in this department, as usual. Could people please remember
to trim posts they're replying to. In other words, if you're replying to a
paragraph from a four-page post, trim the part that your email program
copies from the old message so that only the pertinent bit is left.
Also, for answers to list-based questions you might have, there's nowhere
better than the VFAQ file --
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Admin%20Files/VFAQ.htm
For more general HP facts, check out the Harry Potter Lexicon --
http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon
And for the group's series of substantive FAQ-based essays based on replies
to the group, head on over to the FAQ essay page at the Lexicon
http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/faq/
Cheers!

Hey, everyone!
I know some of you have varied opinions about this issue, but in a way it
affects all of us who read any type of HP-inspired fanfiction, artwork, or
other fan-related stuff not produced by Warner Brothers or Scholastic.
An article appeared on MSNBC about Harry Potter slash. The article is rather
well written and manages to remain more or less objective, but the responses
from Scholastic and Warner Brothers are anything but.
Rhysenn and Acassha are quoted extensively in the article. There is also an
informal survey with the question, "Do you think HP slashers should be
permitted to publish their writings?" When I voted, "Yes" was behind by
about 12%.
Regardless of how you feel about slash, but especially if you have ever
enjoyed any piece in which any HP character explores feelings of a
homoerotic nature for another HP character, please check out this article.
The survey of course has no real impact, but it is a way to be heard.
It opens the door to other attempts to impede our enjoyment of HP fandom.
