If you sign up for Cheetachat you'll get lots of groovy additional features and the option of having an Avatar [little picture] attached to your name. **If you register with Cheetachat, you can save the HPforGrownUps chatroom as one of your favourites by selecting Rooms from the top menu bar, then Favorite Rooms, then Manage Favorite Rooms. Then, if you then click 'ADD', and enter the following handy code - grp*g.2176166:1 - the HP for GrownUps chatroom will become one of your favourites. Could it be any other way? **All the Sunday chats are recorded and stored in a sister club, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownupsChatScripts/ run by Dee, Simon and Catlady, so be aware that your words won't just vanish into the cyberether. The Chatscripts club will give you all the information on the chats, if you ever need another reminder. **For new members, the Sunday chats run from around 8pm GMT onwards. To check the times for your zone, go to the club calendar (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/calendar) and make sure the time zone on the right reads correctly for your area. I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has deigned logos for us. Your efforts are much appreciated. The logos are viewable on the graphics group: Go to Files and then Logos and then the two files are logos.htm and logos2.htm (links below). Each of the logos has a number to the left of it. These are the logo identification numbers, and you will need to remember the number of your favourite logo so that you can vote for it. NOTE: There is no logo number 12, but it is listed in the poll. This is because for me to change anything on the poll would delete all votes currently cast in the poll, something that is not worth the hassle involved. To vote you have to go to the Announcements group . Once there you head towards the polls section and there you will find the logo poll . You will need to join the Announcements group, if you have not done so already. Joining the Announcements list will benefit your life by giving you information about Harry Potter stuff (see message 14221 for more information about the Announcement group). WEEKLY DISCUSSIONS We're coming to the end of our current set of weekly discussion topics on the main HPfGU list, and there are one or two revisions to the last few scheduled lead-off summaries: Here is the plan for the next few weeks (volunteers in brackets): 26th March - 1st April: Hermione Granger and & GoF Chap 36 (both from Penny) 2nd - 8th April: Ron Weasley (Susan) 9th - 15th April: Harry Potter (Joywitch) & Chap 37 GoF (Pippin) See recent schedule, here (in the Files section of the main list): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Discussion%20Summaries/Discussions%20on%20Harry%20Potter%20for%20Grownups.htm See links table to completed chapter summaries, here (also in the Files section): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Discussion%20Summaries/GoFChapters.htm (thanks to Barb Khaja for help with this) WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THAT? We're making tentative plans to continue the scheduled discussions. The idea is that we'd discuss chapters from PoA, then CoS, then PS/SS, with the last set completing just before the release of the Warner Brothers movie. Alongside these we're suggesting various topics for sketches. We'd like to know whether you want to continue some or all of these scheduled discussions, and if so, whether you'd volunteer to write a lead-off summary or two. There is a poll on HPfGU-Announcements: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPFGU-Announcements/polls You can also view the proposed new topics at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPFGU-Announcements/files/NewWeeklyDiscussions.htm Send your questions, comments or suggestions to Neil at neilward at dircon.co.uk. If we do go ahead with the plan, we'll be looking for the first few new volunteers in a week or so's time. For those who are completely new to the list, the idea of the summaries is to sum up a chapter or chapters from one of the HP books, or present a sketch of a character or topic, for the purposes of discussion. Summaries are posted on Monday each week, they can be short or long and the writer usually poses a few questions at the end to fire things off... Please vote in the poll and watch this space for further information. Thanks. Among the quotes/paraphrases: Though she has skimmed the Harry Potter books, she says she hasn't really read them. Others have pointed out many of the alleged similarities. Stouffer's productions ... are 24-page activity books -- homespun amalgams of stories, pencil games and pictures to color. Scholastic executives have doubts about the extent to which "Legend of Rah" was ever available. "Check Books in Print," [Charles] Deull[, Scholastic's General Counsel] says. "We've tried every rare-book store and Web site." They couldn't find a used copy for sale. Deull has seen a photocopy of the book. In the late 1980s, Stouffer says the books were selling so well and licensing agreements were flooding in at such a rate that she projected annual earnings of an astonishing $1 billion. She says that during one 2 1/2-week period her company received orders for $6.5 million, which could have made publishing history. However, even with these orders in hand her company fell apart, she says. She has no records of these gigantic sales because the studio at her home collapsed during a snowstorm in 1996... I always wonder where they get the books. Surely they didn't buy them for the purpose of burning them? Maybe they come from former sinners who've seen the light. Amy Z Church Burns "Harry Potter" Books The beloved and best-selling "Harry Potter" books are deemed "supernatural" by the members of the Harvest Assembly of God Church in rural western Pennsylvania so the congregation hosted a book burning on Sunday evening. Also thrown into the ceremonial fire were a number of "ungodly" videotapes, music CDs, and books that included 1970s albums by Joe Walsh and the rock group Foreigner; CDs by Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and AC/DC; and Walt Disney Co. videos of "Pinocchio" and "Hercules." Books by actress Shirley MacLaine and psychic Edgar Cayce were burned, too. As the smoke rose, teenagers led the congregation in singing "Amazing Grace" and "Father of Creation." The church said it was following instructions in the New Testament's Book of Acts and to express their love of God. "It's the same old devil with a new face," said the Rev. George Bender, 60, leader of the 95-member Pentecostal church. Book burnings are relatively rare, according to the American Library Association, because local authorities seldom grant legal permits for such fiery spectacles. ALA says the last book burning of which it is aware took place in the 1980s. "This is not because people have not wanted to burn books. But book burnings are really very extreme," said Judith Krug, director of the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom. She also said that the "Harry Potter" series has attracted more formal challenges in public school libraries than any other book or book collection for two straight years. --Cathryn Conroy Get additional news reports on a variety of topics from the CompuServe NewsRoom at Keyword: NEWS. First of all, thanks for being considerate about titling posts and using the OT Chatter list for off-topic subjects; this is really helpful for those of us who want to (a) find or (b) avoid things. There are a few 'head-scratchy' message headings slipping through the net, but the vast majority of us have been really good about labelling posts carefully and using prefixes such as SHIP, FF, MOVIE, SPOILER and so on (whoa!!! It seems we also have an anti-FILK faction now...). Permit me to use an analogy, as a brief reminder to all: When you're driving a car, you need to be considerate of the pedestrians around you. Make sure to use your indicators to let them know where you're heading; look in the mirror before you make a manuoevre; don't BLOW YOUR HORN at them; under no circumstances attempt injure or kill anyone with your careless driving. If you see something down a side-street, you'll need to keep your eyes on the road ahead to avoid crashing into that Whomping Willow on the corner. All drivers are also pedestrians, so when you're on the road, you should drive your vehicle as you would expect others to drive theirs when you're on foot. Do as you would be done by. This is the HP-way Code. Some pedestrians and learner drivers new to HP-town might not be sure where they are going, and we might forgive them a bit of confused jaywalking or Sunday driving. However, they could think to check the map and tourist guides supplied before they leave the house. Us regular drivers (especially the juggernauts) should not dazzle the poor newbies with our headlights, but instead wind down our windows and give them polite directions to their destination. What we say about them once we've wound the windows back up is between us and the gatepost... [Did I say 'brief' reminder?] The HP-way cops have supplied the following guides for regular drivers and tourists alike.
