Message-ID: <04ce01c25ebb$ea91bc70$4f5ffea9@cq5hs01> Hi everyone -- I'm pleased to announce the directors of HP Education Fanon, Inc., a non-profit corporation that we've formed for a variety of HP-related educational purposes, including the oversight and management of the planning of periodic symposia for the fans and scholars of HP. For those who don't know, HP4GU and FictionAlley are the primary promoter groups for the upcoming HP symposium in Orlando in July 2003 (Nimbus - 2003: A Harry Potter Symposium). Details at: www.hp2003.org DIRECTORS -- The directors are listed in alphabetical order: Rob Ihinger was born in Southern California, but has lived in Minnesota for more than three decades now. Clean air, clean water, clean (but interesting) politics . . . no reason to leave. An attorney by training, librarian by inclination, salesman by necessity, all around nice guy by sheer luck. Stumbling into science fiction fandom by happy coincidence, he has volunteered for more than thirty conventions including Worldcon, World Fantasy Convention, Minicon, Fourth Street Fantasy Convention and others, in such roles as Executive Committee, Head of Operations, Hotel Head, Volunteer Coordinator, Troubleshooter, Communications Officer, Liaison, Moderator and Program Participant, Badger, and Gopher. Served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Science Fiction Society for five years, including the year of complete Bylaw rewriting. Believes his writing group holds the record for continuous meeting without producing a single manuscript. Peg Kerr was born in a Chicago suburb, moved to Minnesota to attend St. Olaf College, and has stayed in Minnesota ever since. With $50.00 from her first paycheck from her first job out of college, she registered for a science fiction and fantasy writing class. There, she met her husband and wrote the first story she ever sold. In hindsight, this is all quite pleasant consolation for the fact that she was fired from her job the day the class started. She attended the Clarion Writers Workshop in 1988 and has an M.A. in English Literature, specializing in speculative fiction. Her fiction has appeared in various science fiction and fantasy magazines and anthologies. Emerald House Rising is her first novel. The Wild Swans, a stand-alone fantasy based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, is her second. She presently lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Robert Ihinger, and two daughters. Barb Purdom studied classics and anthropology at Temple University years ago and still lives in her native Philadelphia with her husband and kids, working as a freelance singer (chamber music) and also attending school once more (architecture). Steve Vander Ark is the creator of the Harry Potter Lexicon, the premier Harry Potter informational site on the internet. We're still waiting for his full bio, but he's been busy this week renovating the Lexicon. John Walton is a 21-year-old New Yorker with a British accent who is finishing up his MA in International Relations at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. John is also a part-time educator, specialising in dyslexia, hyperlexia, ADD, ADHD and autistic spectrum students. He's a Moderator of HPforGrownups and is the Ombudsman (independent adjudicator) of FictionAlley. His LiveJournal can be found at www.queerasjohn.com. Message-ID: <20020919150745.26283.qmail@...> Greetings, HP Grownups! It is with great pleasure that I invite you to participate in a series of weekly chats that the Nimbus - 2003 staff is holding to make the fans a greater part of the planning process. Please feel free to cross-post this message to lists with folks who might be interested in participating. The first of the Nimbus - 2003 chats will be held on Friday, September 20, at 9 pm EDT, in the HPFGU chat room (instructions are in the Humongous Bigfile!). The topic will be a general Question and Answer session with several staff members. In an attempt to make it possible for folks all over the world to participate in chats, we'll keep the same topic for 2 weeks running, and the second chat for any given topic will be at a rotating time. For example, this week's chat is Q/A at 9 pm EDT. Next week's chat, on September 27, will also be Q/A, but it will be held at 9 pm Pacific Daylight Time. The following week, October 4, we'll discuss Site Logistics at 9 pm EDT, but the week after that (October 11) will be Site Logistics II at 9 pm Central European, or 9 am EDT. We'll go on that way for a few weeks, including a brief Q/A period at the beginning of each chat, at least up until the beginning of November. A complete schedule will be posted at the end of each chat session and during the week before the next session. For your convenience, I've appended a short list of the chat rules we'll be using at the end of this message. Hope to see many people there, and in the future as well! Chat Rules: First and foremost, the chats are NOT a determination of policy for the Symposium. Chats are a method of obtaining feedback and suggestions from the population. We cannot promise to implement every suggestion at chat, no matter how much excitement any idea generates within the conversation. It is our hope that chats will generate some ideas that can be passed on to the symposium planning team, and if they can't be used at Nimbus - 2003, perhaps they can be used at a future symposium. We'd like to keep some order to how things are done, so here are some basic chat rules. Courtesy is a must. No personal attacks or grossly off-topic conversation will be allowed in the chat room, and those who engage in either will be asked to leave. Please do not type over and interrupt when others have the floor. The moderator will give the floor to people by name in an orderly fashion. To determine when a person is finished speaking, we've decided to use the keystroke, ### or #### at the end of that person's last comment. The first exception to interruption is that the moderator for the chat will repeat the topic at hand and the name of the person who has the floor whenever anyone new enters the room (not including leaving and immediately returning). The moderator will also only answer one question at a time. If someone asks a question, please hold off asking another one until the moderator has answered or designated someone else to answer. #### will mark the end of the answer, and then the next person may ask the next question. If several people's questions pop up at once, we'll answer them in the order they appear on the screen. The second exception to "waiting" for someone else to finish is during a brainstorm session. Periodically we will ask chatters to brainstorm, and during that time, please feel free to type and send as many on-topic suggestions as you wish. The timekeeper will count down to the end of the brainstorming, at which point please stop and go back to waiting for others to finish. During brainstorming, no one may comment on, especially to put down, someone else's idea--we will review the suggestions at the end of the brainstorm period. The person who suggested something gets to evaluate it first, and then the moderator will ask for additional comments. Again, wait until you see someone use ### before you step in. If it gets too chaotic, the moderator will call on each person in alphabetic order to comment, and if you have no comment, simply type #### so conversation can continue quickly. Each chat will also include an informal section during the last 15 minutes or so, where we encourage folks to discuss the Symposium freely. Make additional suggestions, discuss plans to travel, meet, share rooms, or anything else you want to do while at Walt Disney World, ask other questions--this is your time. Off-topic conversation is not allowed, but general HP discussion is allowed. If there is a staff person who can stay past the prescribed amount of time, then chat may continue. The chat will end when the last Nimbus - 2003 staff person has to leave the room. Transcripts of each chat will be uploaded to the HPFGU-Convention files section. The Nimbus - 2003 staff reserve the right to adjust these chat rules if and when necessary. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? That said, there was a blurb on CBBC (the children's site of BBC) online, dated today, that had Jo Rowling announcing she and Neil are expecting a baby in spring. I am very happy for her, of course, but as a children's librarian I am worried about the reaction I will get ("Oh no! How much longer will we have to wait now?!") Message-ID: Yes, after a summer of editing and reworking, I'm ecstatic to announce the release of Keeper's Secrets, Chapter 6 -- Come What May. [Keeper's Secrets is an ongoing slightly angsty romance fic following the lives and love of Percy Weasley and Oliver Wood. KS takes place during the PoA school year. As my own life is like Moulin Rouge (without the TB and death, though), so is the format of Keeper's Secrets. The songs which I was thinking of while writing are interspersed throughout the fic. It's rated PG-13 to R for some language.] In chapter six...turmoil and tension abound as the fallout from Oliver's coming-out causes problems for the both the Woods and the Weasleys...not to mention for Percy and Oliver themselves. There's more flying, exploring, crying and loving as yet more secrets are revealed. You can read it today at FictionAlley -- http://www.astronomytower.org/authorLinks/ Woods_Keeper/ Cheers, --John, Wood's Keeper From coriolan at coriolan_cmc2001.yahoo.invalid Mon Sep 30 17:53:39 2002 From: coriolan at coriolan_cmc2001.yahoo.invalid (Caius Marcius) Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 17:53:39 -0000 Subject: Harry Potter Filks: Fight Songs Message-ID: In addition to 32 outstanding new filks (by Gail B., Lilac, Nicole L, selkie, etc.) we now have a section of House Fight Songs, to be sung as your favorite team takes the Quidditch field (featuring fightfilks by Gail, Ellen Anglin, Nicole, Marina Frants, Gail (again) and Lilac.
