Subject: Corrected News about The Witching Hour (Salem, Mass, October 6-10, 2005)
Message-ID:
Three exciting announcements today from The Witching Hour, the Harry
Potter symposium set for Salem, Massachusetts from October 6-10,
2005:
1. Newberry Award-winning author Nancy Farmer will be presenting on
two panels with Holly Black.
2. Author and haunted-house-resident Rose Earhart will be speaking
before the Halloween Ball.
3. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! You can visit
http://www.witchinghour.org/registration/ and register - and if
you're among the first fifty registrants, you'll receive a special,
limited-edition TWH t-shirt.
More about the above...
Nancy Farmer, author of The Eye, The Ear and The Arm, A Girl Named
Disaster and The House of the Scorpion, is coming to TWH! Nancy has
won three Newbery Awards, a Michael L. Printz Award and a National
Book Award. She grew up on the Arizona-Mexico border, served in the
Peace Corps in India and lived in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Her next book, a YA fantasy novel called Sea of Trolls, will be out
this fall. Nancy will sit on From Scribbles to Autographs: A
Writers' Panel and Moral Twlight: When Absolutes Are Shadowered in
Fantasy Literature, both with Holly Black.
Second, Rose Earhart is also speaking at TWH. Rose has written
Dorcas Good, the Diary of a Salem Witch, and Salem's Ghosts, both
fictional novels set against the backdrop of Salem's hisory. Rose is
a former professional ballerina, actress and journalist, and lives
in a haunted house on the Salem Common. Rose will sit on Thinning
the Veil, a panel on death and the afterlife that's part of the
Hallowe'en Ball, and will present on HP and witchcraft.
Third, registration is open! That's right, after many months of
arduous work by the tech team and others, the system is up and ready
for you to register! First 50 registrants will receive a free t-
shirt with a never-to-be-used-again TWH design.

Subject: Update on POA NYC tickets
Message-ID:
I've deleted the other post I made this week, because I didn't want
people to continue buying tickets for the POA show at the IMAX right
now.
I just got a call from IMAX. Despite what they originally said, they
may not be able to sell all the tickets to the show at the
discounted price that they originally gave us - they may have to
sell the tickets (after the first 250) at the full price of $15.00
for adults and $12.00 for kids (and we'd need to charge a PayPal
processing fee for anyone who paid via PayPal, although not for
those paying by check at this point).
So we're putting a hold on further ticket sales, effective
immediately - please don't PayPal us money, and if you haven't sent
a check or money order yet, please don't until I give an update as
to the cost.
Next week, we *will* reopen ticket sales at the price provided by
the theater, but at least until Monday - possibly Tuesday - ticket
sales for POA IMAX NYC are on hold.

Subject: Convention Alley goes to the ballgame!
Message-ID:
Last year the Ottawa Lynx Triple A baseball team held a Harry Potter
day before the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Given the success of that event, they will be holding another Harry
Potter day on May 30, 2004, just before the release of the Prisoner
of Azkaban movie.
Here's where you come in. They've asked Convention Alley to help them
find some people to take part in this event. HP fans, ideally fans
willing to dress up and help them have fun. There will be games and
prizes, though those will most likely be geared toward the children
in the stands.
If you're interested in joining some of the Convention Alley
volunteers at the Lynx Stadium in Ottawa for the afternoon, we'll
happily welcome you on board. Those interested in donning robes or
hats, waving wands or just coming to enjoy the ballgame are all
welcome to participate. Your children and friends included!
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to conjure up free tickets.
Should enough people be interested (20 or more), we will receive
discounted tickets. Regular ticket prices range from $7.00 - $11.00.
Discounted tickets range from $5.50 - $8.50.
Interested parties should contact Amanda at bluerain22 at ... .
Tickets will be purchased 2 weeks prior to the event, so sign up now!

The latest chapter(s) of The End of the
Beginning has been uploaded to schnoogle.com
(http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Saitain
a/The_End_of_the_Beginning/ ) Er, put the
URL
back together.
The Story Summary: Neville is the Wizarding
World's new hero, but is he ready to face
those that betrayed him?
The Story Basics: Neville has finally stopped
the second war of Voldemort, but as the
Wizarding World starts to rebuild, the
survivors must deal with the fall out of war.
Life is tough for a hero who never wanted to
be. Between his boyfriend turning on him,
his best friend being a temperamental dark
wizard and his comrades going insane, Neville
must deal with life as it is, and life as it
will be. And with a new Dark Lord rising,
life only looks like it's getting more
hellish.
(note about the chapter summaries below: due
to an interlude on Schnoogle.com chapter
eight is really chapter nine and so on).
In these chapters:
Chapter Eight: Heroes-
Neville must face a challenge to prove his
worth but when faced with a choice to choose
between a destiny he never wanted and a quiet
life, will he make the right choice? Also,
someone from the past returns to Hogwarts and
Harry finds something else missing in
Hogwarts.
Chapter Nine: Battle
Seamus finally has to make a choice, some of
the past is revealed, and young Cotty is
returned to Hogwarts, but things aren't well
as Death Eaters storm the castle.
Rating: R (blood, sex, Lucius)
Main Characters: Neville Longbottom, Draco
Malfoy, Seamus Finnigan, Percy Weasley,
Lucius Malfoy
Major Minor Characters: Harry Potter, Albus
Dumbledore, Peter Pettigrew, Justin FF,
Dennis Creevey.
Please Note: The beginning three chapters of
the story are under revision, so while the
basic plot is there, the newer chapters will
actually contain decent writing. So you can
read it now, or later...though now would be
better as the revisions are taking forever.

Four Immediate Openings at HP Education Fanon, Inc.
1. HPEF, the organization who brought you Nimbus
2003, is in need of a designer for our website, and
we'd like him or her to be one of our talented
supporters. If you're interested, please send an email
to designer @ hpeducationfanon.org (no spaces).
Include (as an attachment) an 800x600 JPG image of a
mock-up of what you think our front page should look
like. Candidates should ideally have an extensive
knowledge of HTML, CSS and accessible design (see
http://www.webstandards.org), and of course a deep and
abiding love for Harry Potter. Membership in an
internet standards organization (such as IETF, W3C,
etc.) is a definite plus, but not required. Please
include any other relevant qualifications with your
submission, as well as anything else you think we
should know about you.
We're looking for a design that integrates the themes
and goals of our organization to: (i) foster study,
appreciation, interpretation, discussion and debate of
the Harry Potter novels; (ii) select sites and provide
oversight and management of the planning of annual or
periodic symposia for fans and scholars of the Harry
Potter novels; (iii) educate the public about the
benefits of reading. A removable logo design and a
layout that captures the fun of the books and movies
(illustrations and themes) is also a possibility. The
look is up to you, but open books and libraries
are two of the concepts we would like to see
incorporated. The designer we choose will become part
of the HPEF corporate team, spearhead our design, help
integrate individual event pages, and be on hand to
manage other changes/developments at HPEF. Submissions
are due by May 31. Thank you in advance for your
interest, and we're looking forward to seeing your
concepts!
2. In addition, HPEFs second event, The Witching
Hour, seeks a volunteer with SQL and PHP expertise to
help manage their web needs. If you are qualified and
have approximately two to four hours a week to spend,
please contact The Witching Hour as soon as possible
via web @ witchinghour.org (no spaces).
3. Finally, HPEF, Inc., once again finds itself in
need of both a treasurer and an independent
accountant.
For the position of Treasurer, HPEF seeks an
accountant (preferred) or an individual with extensive
experience in bookkeeping and familiarity with
financial statements, Quickbooks and MS Excel. The
Treasurer will be responsible for making bank
deposits, writing checks, keeping the corporate
checkbook via Quickbooks and coordinating records and
funds with the event treasurer of each of HPEF's
active planning committees. The Treasurer will also
work with HPEF's independent accountant and its tax
counsel as necessary. The Treasurer attends quarterly
(and special) meetings of the HPEF Board of Directors
and must prepare a quarterly report for the Board, and
work with tax counsel to prepare annual returns.
Interested applicants should submit a resume outlining
their experience and interest to treasurer @
hpeducationfanon.org (no spaces).
The Accountant applicant will ideally be a CPA or else
must have at least two years' accounting experience,
familiarity with GAAP regulations, and be able to
produce comprehensive financial reports. Experience in
financial planning is a plus. The Accountant will work
with the Treasurer and the Tax Counsel to review
periodic financial statements and annual returns. The
Accountant will be required to prepare and certify
audited financial statements for HPEF in the near
future. If you're interested, please submit a resume
outlining your experience, qualifications and interest
to us as soon as possible at treasurer @
hpeducationfanon.org (no spaces)
Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who might
be interested.

Subject: Tickets for POA IMAX NYC are back on sale!
Message-ID:
We have some great news about the TLC, FictionAlley, Sugarquill, HPANA and Everyone Else June 5 POA IMAX showing in NYC! The LOEWS IMAX theater is still offering tickets at a discount - although the prices have gone up a little for those who are post-college-graduate-ages.
If you're paying via PayPal - Tickets are still $10.00 for those who
are college students or younger, but tickets for adults are now
$13.00. The popcorn/soda combination is still $2.50.
If you're paying via check or money order - Tickets are 9.50 for a
kid/college student ticket, 12.50 for an adult ticket, 2.25 for
popcorn+soda. If you want to pay for tickets this way, please send
an email to help at ... with your name and the number of
tickets that you're reserving. Your email will hold your ticket
reservation until your payment arrives, and sending an email
obligates you to send a check or money order. We do not recommend
sending cash. Address information for this type of payment is at
http://www.fictionalley.org/POA_NYC.html
If you want to purchase tickets via PayPal, please click here:
http://www.fictionalley.org/POA_NYC.html
As of today, we'd already sold over 250 tickets - the theater holds
600 people, but we don't know how quickly we're going to sell out.
So if you want to be sure that you'll have a seat, order sooner than
later.
Tickets will be distributed in the 90 minutes before showtime, and
closer to the date, we'll post here to let everyone know exactly
where we'll be. Seats are first-come, first served, based on
arrivals at the theater that afternoon.
We still don't know a definite start time, but we *think* the show
will begin at 4:00 pm.
See you there!

Subject: ADMIN: Call for Elves
Message-ID:
The HPfGU Admin Team is looking for A Few Good Elves.
All elves are expected to perform one or both of the following
duties:
? Welcoming new list members -- Send personal welcome e-mails to all
of the people who join the list on your assigned day and enter
related information in a database.
? Participation in the list-reading rota -- Read every message
posted to HPforGrownups (the main list) on your assigned day, check
for compliance to posting guidelines, and note the non-compliant
posts in a database.
ADDITIONAL TASKS
In addition, if you are interested in assisting with the following
additional (optional) tasks, please note this in your Elf
Enslavement Application:
? Pending Messages -- Approve, reject, or edit moderated posts from
new members and explain why a message was rejected or edited.
? Help Desk -- Those who have problems with grammar, spelling, and
punctuation (non-native English speakers, people with dyslexia or
visual impairments, etc.) submit their messages for editing before
they post them to the list.
? Technical Support -- Please have one or more of the following
skills: knowledge of the mysterious inner workings of Yahoomort,
HTML markup, using or writing scripts (Perl, Java, SQL, etc.),
security measures, or other Internet technologies.
? Public Relations -- Respond to messages sent to the HPforGrownups-
owner account.
? Database Maintenance -- Clear out old entries, ensure the accuracy
of database entries, and cull relevant information. (We use the
databases provided by YahooGroups.)
? Monitoring HPfGU Sister Lists -- Check OT-Chatter, Movie, and
other HPFGU lists for spammers, flame wars, and other irregular or
illegal behavior.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
An elf candidate must
? Have been a member of HPfGU in good standing for at least 6
months -- "Good standing" means that you are not on permanent
moderated status. (Those few who are permanently moderated have
been notified.)
? Have a good sense of HPfGU's posting conventions -- You understand
the basic HPfGU standards of snipping, attribution, and courtesy.
(You don't need to have the rules memorized, though.)
? Have good spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills -- You don't
have to be a Master Linguist, but you should know the difference
between a semicolon and a hole in the ground. :-) Non-native
English speakers are welcome to apply.
? Have good communication skills -- It is important that you know
how to express your ideas (especially disagreement) courteously and
with clarity.
? Have good interpersonal skills -- Your fellow List Elves will come
from a variety of backgrounds and have a variety of communication
styles. You'll need to know how to get along with people you may not
particularly like or understand, how to go along with decisions with
which you don't necessarily agree, and how to be discreet (not
reveal confidential list business to non-admins).
? Be reasonably level-headed -- You should be slow to react when
insulted, slow to jump to conclusions, and quick to forgive
misunderstandings. If you are in the habit of responding in anger
(instead of waiting before posting), this might not be the job for
you. Patience is definitely a virtue in HPFGU list admin; a sense of
humor (especially in the face of the absurd) is mandatory.
? Score respectably well on the Percy scale -- If you have some
perfectionist tendencies, you'll fit right in!
? Have no life -- Just kidding! However, we do ask that your real
life not be so full as to prevent you from performing your elfly
duties. (You can negotiate how many elfly duties you have.) We
prefer that you commit to a minimum of six months in List Admin;
however, you can don clothing sooner if the need arises.
The ability to keep the rest of the Team supplied with eclairs is a
bonus but is not required. :-)
BENEFITS
Becoming an HPfGU List Elf allows you to
? Blow your Harry Potter Obsession score through the roof.
? Imbibe all the butterbeer you want (except when on duty).
? Become the target of bitter and sometimes delicious insults,
e.g., "Moderator Tart."
? Acquire a stylish new wardrobe of colorful tea cozies, lurid
pillowcases, and violently mismatched socks.
? Get immediate first aid for ears-in-the-oven-door slammings, hand
ironings, foot-in-blender jammings, and other self-inflicted
punishments.
If a large number of candidates apply, it may not be possible to
accept every qualified candidate right away. Every application will
be acknowledged, and we'll keep the applications on file for future
consideration unless you notify us otherwise.
You can find the Elf Enslavement Application (EEA.txt) at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/
The application includes instructions on where to send the
application.
The deadline for sending in applications is Friday, May 21, 2004, at
00:00 (midnight) GMT.
Best regards,

Lights" ? will play host to Lumos 2006: A Harry Potter Symposium.
Utilizing a theme of "Back to School", a variety of academic
presentations and panels is planned, including special workshops for
educators and librarians. In addition to its scholarly daytime
programming, an assortment of evening activities, including Water
Quidditch, Magical Night Classes, and Live Chess will be available
to symposium attendees.
This event will mark the third such offering to be sponsored by
HPEF, a non-profit educational (501(c)3) organization. Other events
include Nimbus - 2003, which took place in July 2003 in Orlando,
Florida, and The Witching Hour, which is scheduled for October 2005
in Salem, Massachusetts.
"Lumos 2006 will offer a fun, educational atmosphere that's
exclusively Harry Potter," says Debbie McLain, the event's Minister
of Magic. "From British food all weekend long, to Butterbeer in the
hotel's Irish pub, attendees will be completely immersed in J.K.
Rowling's unique, magical universe."
In keeping with the theme, conference planners intend to decorate
the host hotel to give it a "Hogwarts" feel. There will be house
tables in the Great Hall, a Common Room for all four houses
exhibiting school spirit with their house banners, and a library in
the Art Gallery to browse the latest books about Harry. A diverse

Subject: Announcing FictionAlley's PoA Harry Potter Community Contest
Message-ID:
You can also read about it at http://www.fictionalley.org/contest/
For ten years, Harry Potter spent much of his time in a cupboard
under the stairs, at the house of his cruel aunt and uncle. After
his letter from Hogwarts arrived, he was freed to explore a world of
magic and wonder - and to join a fascinating community of witches
and wizards.
Through the Harry Potter books and movies, people from around the
world have become part of the fandom, whether as lurkers who read
and occasionally review stories, artists whose creativity is
inspirational, and storytellers, essayists, commentators and
observers. We have become a thriving, vibrant, worldwide community.
Everyone who sees Prisoner of Azkaban will be seeing it as part of
that community - whether you attend a line party, or see the film in
New York City on June 5 with hundreds of other fans, or whether you
see it with family and "real-world" friends and later discuss it
online, the community belongs to you.
And FictionAlley wants to know your thoughts about this community!
Our HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN COMMUNITY CHALLENGE gives
you an opportunity to creatively express your perspective on seeing
Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban as a member of this Harry
Potter fandom.
There will be one first prize winner in each of four categories:
ages 13-15, ages 16-19, ages 19-22 and ages 23 and over. There will
also be one second prize winner in each of those four categories;
age will be determined by the age of the entrant on June 15, 2004.
There will be one grand prize winner chosen from among all entries;
the grand prize winner will win the Trelawney Tea Set. Each first
prize winner will win a Time- Turner. Each second prize winner will
win a HARRY POTTER #7 hat and shirt. Additional prizes, including
house badges, wizarding hats, sets of temporary tattoos, and
magnets, will be awarded to entries that are randomly selected from
the total pool of all eligiable entries by a representative of
FictionAlley, whose selections are final and binding in all respects.
Check out the contest, and please enter! We're looking forward to
seeing the art and writing submissions from all of you!

Subject: POA IMAX NYC
Message-ID: <5913e6f80405241851a987ce@...>
This post concerns POA IMAX NYC on June 5, 2004 (3:30 pm showing).
We are putting a stop on ticket sales. We're too close to 600 to feel
comfortable selling any more via PayPal or snail mail right now,
although we're working on a way to tally what we've sold so far, and
we may put a dozen or two on sale on June 1, if it turns out that we
actually still have some available.
I feel terrible that we're not able to give any warning on this, but
we've been so busy the past 36 hours with teh PoA premiere (and had a
few unexpected 10+ ticket sales) that this is the only option we have
at the moment. If you've already paid, or already sent a check or
money order, or if I've already emailed you about how to do so (or if
you get an email from me before 10:30 pm Eastern Time today) you're
all set.
We are also going to talk with the theater tomorrow and see if we can
get a small block - say, 50 seats - at the 6:30 pm show, so those who
aren't able to come to the earlier one will still have a chance to
have a get-together (and those who want to see it twice in a row,
can).
We'll keep you posted!

Subject: HPEF Names Two New Board Members, President
Message-ID: <0f8501c44284$797259b0$4f5ffea9@cq5hs01>
HP Education Fanon, Inc. (HPEF) is pleased to add two new representatives to
its Board of Directors.
Dr. Philip Nel is an Assistant Professor of English at Kansas State
University. He published JK Rowling's Harry Potter Novels: A Reader's
Guide in 2001 and Dr. Seuss: American Icon in 2004. Dr. Nel
teaches a class on Harry Potter at Kansas State University, is a list-member
of HP for Grownups, and was a Special Guest Presenter at Nimbus - 2003.
Dr. Catherine Schaff-Stump holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies and
has taught for over 15 years at various institutions, including Kirkwood
Community College and the University of Iowa. Dr. Schaff-Stump is an
administrator at SugarQuill and presented at Nimbus - 2003.
HPEF's second President, Peg Kerr, most regretfully resigned in April 2004.
HPEF is happy to keep a little bit of Peg around as an ex-officio member of
the Board of Directors. To replace her, Lee Hillman, AKA Gwendolyn Grace,
former Vice President (and advising director) of HPEF and the organizer of
their first event, Nimbus - 2003, was elected President and elected to the
Board of Directors as a full, voting member.
HPEF's second event, The Witching Hour, will occur October 6-10, 2005 in
Salem, Massachusetts. Last week, HPEF also announced that its third event,
Lumos, will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 27-30, 2006.

Introducing Accio UK 2005: The first Harry Potter Conference in the
UK.
Accio UK is delighted to announce that our first conference will
take place over the weekend of 29-31st July 2005 at Reading
University, England.
Accio 2005 will be a friendly event, bringing together adult Harry
Potter fans and academics to discuss all aspects of J.K. Rowling's
Harry Potter books, in what we believe is the first such conference
in the UK.
Planned events include presentations, panels, speeches, games,
Quidditch, a banquet, and informal discussions into the small hours!
Accio UK aims to foster an intimate atmosphere so that members can
get to know fellow fans without being overwhelmed. For this reason,
we are offering attending membership as an all-inclusive package ?
with all accommodation and all meals, including the feast, being
part of the ticket price and a secondary option which allows members
to arrange their own overnight accommodation but still share in
everything other than breakfast.
We are now open for registration and payments are acceptable by
Paypal or UK cheque. Places are limited by the size of the venue, so
early registration is encouraged. We are also offering an early bird
discount of ?20 off the full price which we will honour until
Halloween 2004.
We recognise that some fans might wish to spread the costs of
membership, and for this reason we are offering an instalment plan
in which membership is payable in three quarterly payments.
We are contemplating adding optional bolt-on day trips or even a
mini-tour to the event; so watch this space for further details.
Although this event is sponsored in part by HPfGU, further
discussion of Accio should not take place here. Instead, we'd
like to summon you to our website http://www.accio.org.uk to
find out more about Accio."
Meanwhile, please register at the Accio 2005 volunteer Yahoo
Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hpukcon-volunteers if
you are interested in volunteering for the convention

For those of us who can't wait until June 4, here's a short film mockumentary
that takes a peek into the "story behind the story" a la E! True Hollywood
Stories, or VH1's Behind the Music. Definitely for fans of the books.
It's actually gotten a bunch of mentions by fansites like mugglenet,
hogwartswire, iharrypotter.net, and darkhorizons.com, and is currently one of
ifilm.com's Top 100 Most Popular Short Films of All Time.
Here's the link:

Subject: New Replay Chapter
Message-ID:
A new chapter of "Replay" is up on The Dark Arts at FictionAlley:
Chapter Nine: Special Delivery
Tilda's family arrive to celebrate her birthday early, resulting in
much madness as she makes sure they don't find Harry, who has to
sleep in Tilda's room so that her brother can kip on the couch.
Tilda is starting to have some thoughts about Harry that she knows
are utterly inappropriate for a woman her age, but before she can
think much about this a letter comes for him, special delivery....
"Replay" is a work-in-progress, a novel-lenth (eventually) post-
Order of the Phoenix fanfiction (mystery/romantic comedy). (Chapter
10 is being sent to FA very shortly.)

Subject: The Alfonso Cuaron Fangirl & Fanboy Fanfic & Fanart Extravaganza
Message-ID:
FictionAlley, purveyors of aids to Fanfic Authors and
Artists, are pleased to bring you: The Azkaban
Assignment!
It's an Alfonso Cuaron Fangirl/Fanboy Extravaganza for
the premiere of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban. Reviews of the film so far (from fans as well
as professional critics) have acclaimed the film for
its cinematographic brilliance and its darker, richer
tone. To celebrate Cuaron's success, our challenge is
to write a fic or create a piece of fanart which
incorporates an image (like the Frog Chorus or the
piano in the Shrieking Shack) that doesn't contradict
Book Three, but likewise doesn't appear in the book.
Post your art (in the usual way) at
http://www.fictionalley.org//fictionalleypark/forums/forumdisplay.php
?s=&forumid=181 or post your cookies or ficlets at
http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/forumdisplay.php?
s=&forumid=181 sometime within the month of June. Fics may be
drabble length (100 words) or up to 3000 words.
And, of course, you can post even if you're not fangirling or
fanboying the film, or Cuaron. It's entirely up to you.
