They've yet to achieve the professional polish of our accomplished Chorus of Death Eaters and Chorus of Dementors, but I think in time the Chorus of Inferi will take their place alongside such legendary groups as The Zombies and the Grateful Dead. Speaking of accomplished, the ever-prolific Salazar has just written a CoS musical based on Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, titled Phantom of the Diary. ( More information is at http://www.hp2005.org ) As a sponsor, we have the opportunity to offer one registration to TWH (current value US$180.00) to the winner of a writing contest hosted by FictionAlley.org. Here's the challenge: write up to 5000 words from a paper, essay or answer to an O.W.L. or N.E.W.T. question from the perspective of any character in the HP books - what would Dumbledore have written about in his fifth year History of Magic class? What essay did Sirius write for Slughorn at the end of his fourth year, and what did Regulus focus on in his upper-level Defense Against the Dark Arts class? What was the theory behind Hermione's rune translations for her O.W.L.'s? Did Bill Weasley ever write about werewolves in Kettleburn's Care of Magical Creatures? You might want to take a look at Sublimation & the Snitch by Samvimes (http://www.riddikulus.org/authors/samvimes/SSBRJL.html), who'll join two of the teachers on FA's mod squad as the judges for the challenge, for an example of a term paper as written by an HP character; the entirity of the fic is Remus's Freudian analysis of Quidditch, written for his History of Magic term paper. Essays, erm, we mean fics, are due by August 25, 2005 at 11:00 pm UK time, and the winner will be notified by August 30, 2005. Every entrant will see their Owl Box on FA double in size for a year, effective on or before September 15, 2005. To enter, post your fic in the forum located at http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=217 by the deadline. Remember - this is supposed to be a school essay so we ask that all submissions for this Challenge be rated PG-13 or less. You must be past your 18th birthday as of October 6, 2005, or between the ages of 14 and 17, and able to comply with The Witching Hour's rules at http://www.witchinghour.org/registration/#restrict; you are responsible for transportation to The Witching Hour, and all ancillary expenses at and regarding the event. You will also have to provide your real name during the TWH registration process, but not to FA. If you win, and have already registered for TWH, you can sell your registration pursuant to TWH's rules. Any questions? Ask them in S&Q or send an email to help at .... It includes nearly four dozen papers, presentations and panel summaries from Nimbus - 2003, and even though most of the works were completed a little over a year ago (we gave the authors time to edit after the conference) the themes, concepts, and analysis are interesting, entertaining and even useful if you're trying to puzzle out what may happen in Book Seven or solve the mysteries in the first six books. You can read the press release from xlibris at the bottom of this post. Check out the table of contents here - http://www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/book_excerpt.asp?bookid=27108 and the gorgeous cover at http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/1413497039.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg featuring an image from and some excellent art direction by . The book includes papers and other contributions from Lexicon Steve, Peg Kerr, Edmund Kerns, Roger Highfield, Phil Nel, John Granger and others (if you're in there and want me to add a link to your LJ too, let me know! And don't miss the transcript of the unforgettable Ship Debate! You can now order it via Amazon (it's also available at bn.com, too)! I would really appreciate it if you used any links at http://www.livejournal.com/~hpef_news Now, here comes the request. If you want to get it, get it now. I saw the amazingness of HP parodist CleoLinda Jones' announcement of her Movies in 15 Minutes book via Amazon.co.uk two weeks ago, and how it skyrocketed to number one on Amazon's charts - and while I don't think we can do that well on Amazon.com, it would be amazing if we sold enough copies this weekend to find ourselves in the top 500, or even the top 100. It would be great publicity for TWH and for Lumos, and for the fandom as a whole, becuase this is an amazing work generated by academics and adult fans in tandem, which is a first for the HP fandom, and may be as unique as Nimbus - 2003 was. So please, buy the book! It really is interesting, and pretty, and a good resource and a good snapshot of academia and fan-stuff, and I think it deserves a place on everyone's bookshelf. One more thing! If you were at Nimbus, and requested an Amazon gift certificate instead of a CD-ROM, next week, when HPEF president Gwen gets back from Pennsic, we'll be sending you a gift certificate that you can use via Borders' Amazon.com store on any purchase via that store - you can use it towards the book, but if you want to purchase the book now and help our ranking, and use the actual gift certificate in your friendly neighborhood Borders bricks & mortar store later, you can do that, too. It's your call. And if you want a review copy, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the person at Xlibris who's sending them out. Many new character openings as we begin to blend the new HBP canon into our game, and now Harry Potter is newly vacated and available. This game is run by adults and geared toward adult/mature players. We do allow older teens (16+) with mature writing styles and a firm grasp and understanding of canon and their characters. We carefully screen new players to ensure good quality players and maximum game enjoyment for everyone. Hogwarts and the student population is by no means our only focus. We have many adult players out and about in the wizarding world and even mingling with the Muggles. There is a great deal of room for creativity and imagination while still keeping true to the heart and feel of JKR's universe. Our game has numerous forums and boards to allow our characters to play in many time-frames, including Hogwarts history, MWPP era, past Harry Potter years, up to year 6. We are just now integrating HBP canon into the game?please beware of spoilers if you come to view the board. Some minor aspects of canon we have chosen not to integrate as the characters involved do not wish to alter established `ships' right now, etc. but the core plotline of HBP will be followed. Our Homepage can be viewed here: http://www.hauntedchambers.net And our currently available character listing can be viewed here: http://www.hauntedchambers.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=732#732 We have newly vacated positions of crucial characters, which we are very anxious to fill. Please note: We will be screening these applications especially closely for firm grasp of canon, firm idea of character interpretations, and writing style. Harry Potter--this is a newly vacated position and we are highly anxious to fill this. Harry should be run by someone with a firm grasp of the character, who is pro-active about starting threads and suggesting/driving plots and who can come to the board a minimum of five times a week to read/post with the character. Preference will be given to applicants over the age of 18, though all well-written applications will be considered. Peter Pettigrew Rufus Scrimegeour Alastor Moody Dean Thomas Seamus Finnegan Parvati Patil There are many, many other available characters, these just happen to be the highest needs at this time. Please come and have a look around?it is a fun and interesting way to get even deeper into the core personalities of your favorite characters as we angst away over the cliff-hanger of HBP and anxiously await Book 7! It's a "first pass" job. There will probably be further refinements over time. And there are a number of new essays that I want to add. But those may not be ready to go up until the usual semi-annual update at Halloweem. Still, everything has been gone overr and while in some cases "compliance" only translates into "not absolutely contradicted yet", the material *has* been modified to reflect the new material from Book 6. http://www.redhen-publications.com/Potterverse.html From der_nanan at der_nanan.yahoo.invalid Wed Aug 24 15:18:49 2005 From: der_nanan at der_nanan.yahoo.invalid (der_nanan) Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 15:18:49 -0000 Subject: Harry Potter FanFiction World has a new URL!!!
