Phoenix Rising, to be held May 17-21, 2007, in and around the French Quarter of New Orleans, depends on scholars, professionals, and fans for a wide variety of programming all about Harry Potter. In fact, the vast majority of our programming schedule is drawn from the theories, creativity, discussion, and studies that attendees propose! We invite your proposals on all things Potter by tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. EST. Our Call for Papers, at http://www.thephoenixrises.org/programming/academic/cfp/, gives an overview of the proposal process, and we welcome papers, panels of papers or panel discussions, workshops, roundtable discussions, and combinations of these. We're also pleased to be able to include fan creativity, from fanfiction readings and fanart portfolios to creative booths -- so if you sketch, write, beta read, or give artistic feedback, please visit http://www.thephoenixrises.org/programming/exploratory/aanight/cfp.html to find out more. Finally, we'll feature a gallery of fan and fantasy art throughout the weekend, including art from artists who may not be able to attend, and the prospectus can be viewed at http://www.thephoenixrises.org/programming/exploratory/gallery/prospectus.html. For more information on Phoenix Rising's programming, please visit our website at http://www.thephoenixrises.org, or view the programming section directly at http://www.thephoenixrises.org/programming/ . We're always happy to answer questions e-mailed to programming @ thephoenixrises. org. All submissions must be made via the online submissions system at http://www.thephoenixrises.org/submissions/ and are due no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on November 4. Message-ID: For those Harry Potter fans who want to be a part of the excitement and planning of E7, here's your chance! It will take the joint effort of MANY volunteers to make E7 a magical and memorable experience for everyone, so please look over the different job descriptions posted on our Web site (http://www.enlightening2007.org/volunteer.pdf) and let us know how you would like to be involved. And don't be intimidated by any of the director/coordinator positions listed. We have intentionally divided responsibilities into many small roles, so that no single job is a huge time commitment. While prior experience in any of these fields is a plus, enthusiasm and dedication are more important qualifications. If you are interested in working more than one position, that's even better! If you would like to apply for any of the positions listed, please send me an email at victoria at bondingoverbooks.org letting me know the position(s) you are interested in and any experience you have that might be relevant. This is the first event of its kind, and it is impossible to predict exactly what will be involved in the planning process. Organizing E7 will be an adventure of its own! From ticcatalk at ticcatalk.yahoo.invalid Fri Nov 17 17:02:56 2006 From: ticcatalk at ticcatalk.yahoo.invalid (Em) Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2006 17:02:56 -0000 Subject: Announcement: Colin Manlove to Speak at Sectus 2007 Message-ID: Sectus are thrilled to announce that Colin Manlove, renowned academic and children's literature expert, has signed on as one of our featured speakers! "English children's fantasy has its sources in the particularly early and rapid English industrial revolution, and in the Romantic glorification of the imagination and the child. The ideas of the lost pastoral and of lost childhood fuse into one chord of longing for lost innocence, which expresses itself through worlds that rewrite actuality." "Were we to read symbolically, (Hogwarts) might become a single fallen soul...assaulted by the devil but upheld by choice and grace." "(Voldemort) is in a sense that side of Harry himself that is least sure of his identity and his hold on life in a world without family or...security." "But he is also the alien, the monster Grendel outside the feast hall...the culmination of the portrayals of malice and threat to identity in earlier 1990's fantasy..." -- from 'From Alice to Harry Potter: Children's Fantasy in England' by Colin Manlove. Colin Manlove is the author of twelve books of literary criticism. While focusing primarily on the fantasy genre, he has also written books on Shakespeare, seventeenth and eighteenth century literature, and a wide range of essays and articles. Before his retirement in 1993, he was a Reader in English literature at the University of Edinburgh. He has graciously agreed to come and talk to our attendees about Harry Potter as a part of the greater scheme of children's fantasy literature, particularly as it compares to C.S. Lewis's Narnia series. He'll also discuss topics such as certain vs. uncertain identity, and his own ideas about how the series will be wrapped up in the final book. 'From Alice to Harry Potter' was selected by the editors of CHOICE as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2003. "...probably the best ? and certainly the most up-to-date ? survey of English children's fantasy literature available." ? David L. Russell, The Lion and the Unicorn You can buy Colin Manlove's books and support Sectus at the same time! Just look out for the Amazon link on our website. Sectus 2007 offers attendees the opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of J. K. Rowling's series at a major fandom conference to be held in the heart of London. Sectus runs from 19th to 22nd July and will encompass a variety of events from academic papers, discussions and debates to themed sports and games. It is run on a not-for-profit basis, and any surplus from the event will go directly to Book Aid International. In our last round, we had both first-timers and professional voice actors participate, so again, no previous experience is required. The Cast Tonks McGonagall Ginny Hermione Harry Ron If you're interested in auditioning, you have two options. 1.) You can record your audition piece in a .mp3 and email it to auditions @ fictionalley.org (without any spaces) This is our recommended method for auditions to ensure the best possible quality and clarity. (Since you will also need to be able to record your part for the play if cast, you will need to know how to record your own voice and format it in a .mp3.) You can use a free program like Audacity to record your audition. 2.) Your other option is to call the FictionAlley voicemail line. >From Skype you can contact username 'FictionAlley', or from any phone, call 303-800-4342 in the US and +44 0161 408 3427 in the UK. Please reduce background noise as much as possible for your audition. If you choose this method, it is imperative that you clearly spell your email address and FA username (if you have one). When auditioning, you have a choice of reading one or both of the paragraphs below. (If you have the ability to do multiple accents, pick the one or two you feel would be best for the part, but make note of your other abilities.) Option 1 "How do those hats work, then?" said Hermione, distracted from her homework and watching Fred and George closely. "I mean, obviously it's some kind of invisibility spell, but it's rather clever to have extended the field of the spell beyond the boundaries of the charmed object? I'd imagine the charm wouldn't have a very long life, though?" ? Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter Twenty-Four, Occlumency. Option 2 "Listen to me, Harry," he said urgently, "you must study Occlumency as hard as you can, do you understand me? Do everything Professor Snape tells you and practice it particularly every night before sleeping so that you can close your mind to bad dreams ? you will understand why soon enough, but you must promise me ?" ? Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter Twenty-Seven, The Centaur and the Sneak. Auditions are due no later than Wednesday, December 6th at 12:00 PST. The cast will be announced no later than Saturday, December 9th, and your recordings will need to be submitted no later than Saturday, December 16th at 12:00 PST. If you do not have time, please do not commit to this project. Just remember to have fun ? SpellCast is excited to have you involved! And if you have any questions, you can email us at auditions @ fictionalley.org or spellcast @ fictionalley.org (again, without spaces) or ask in our forum at FictionAlley Park ( http://forums.fictionalley.org/park/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=232 ).
