This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Harry Potter books in the country where it all began. Sectus will be held in the heart of the capital, close to Regent's Park and within easy walking distance of Oxford Circus, Madame Tussaud's and King's Cross. Sectus will comprise a varied mixture of academic papers, panels, informal discussions and workshops. We already have Steve Vander Ark, creator of the Harry Potter Lexicon, confirmed as a guest speaker, and some exciting proposals lined up from all areas of fandom. Call for Papers For the academic side of the programming, we're seeking papers on a wide range of topics - the following are just some suggested themes: * - Science and technology.* Can science be said to exist in the Wizarding World, and if so, how far does it reflect our real-world knowledge? Is magic bound by the laws of physics *- Mythology, alchemy and symbolism.* How myths and legends support Rowling's storytelling, and how an examination of alchemical theory and symbolism can help us unravel the secrets within the text *- Education*. The portrayal of education in the Wizarding World, the effective use of Rowling's books in real-world education and is the 'reading revolution' a myth? *- Social and political issues*. Explorations of class, race, gender and sexuality in the narrative, the Wizarding World and/or derived fan works. - *Fandom history*. From paper to screen - how would the HP fandom have fared without the internet, and what lies ahead for the fandom after the publication of the seventh book? *- Fandom issues. * Staying on the right side of international law, fan fiction vs. fan art, gender and the fan community. Proposals for papers on these or other topics, or for any other events, should be sent to submissions at .... Full guidelines for submission can be found at http://www.sectus.org/programme.php The deadline for submitting proposals is 31st January 2007. Extra-curricular activities: As well as the academic side of the conference, we will be running a unique Wizarding Tournament. This is open to all attendees, and will consist of three tasks, culminating in a treasure hunt around London. At the centre of the tournament will be Not the Yule Ball, a formal dinner and opportunity for some well-mannered frivolity. Entertainment will be provided by ZHL Strings, a string quartet renowned for their energetic performances. Tickets are not included in the registration price, and will be on sale soon. Outside the conference: For those who want to extend their trip into a full holiday, we're offering two options. Starting on 14th July 2007, we will be running a series of sighseeing trips and activities designed to help you make the most out of your stay in London. As well as the usual sights, we're planning a themed medieval banquet and a cruise down the Thames. All suggestions are accepted: please email info at ... with your preferences. Also in the works is a trip to Alnwick Castle, better known as Hogwarts from the first two films. This trip is to be held on Wednesday July 18th, and will include a tour of all the filming locations in the castle, lunch in the castle restaurant, organised games and a themed gift bag. Tickets for this trip will be on sale shortly: please watch the website and/or LJ community (sectus_2007) for details. All pre-conference events will be organised on an informal basis, and are subject to availability and demand. Payment for some events may be required in advance. If you're looking for a way to relax after a busy conference weekend in London, you might be interested in our Residential Course. >From Monday 23rd July until Sunday 29th, we will have exclusive use of a bunkhouse in an isolated part of Snowdonia, North Wales. As well as the academic programming, which will consist of presentations and roundtable-style discussions, there will be plenty of opportunity to relax and explore your surroundings in one of the most unspoiled areas of Britain. The cost of the Residential Course is ?250 (payable in installments), which includes travel to and from London, six nights' accommodation and all meals for the duration of our stay. Further details and a booking form are available at http://www.sectus.org/residential.php Please note that places on the Residential Course are extremely limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Where your money goes Sectus is completely non-profit and run entirely by volunteers. Unlike other conferences, everyone involved in running Sectus pays the same registration, accommodation and travel as everyone else. Any surplus resulting from the event, as well as any proceeds from our Charity Auction, will go directly to Book Aid International, an organisation who work to provide books to libraries, hospitals, refugee camps and schools in the developing world. We hope you will join us in supporting this worthy cause. Registration and where to find out more You can book for Sectus on our website, at http://www.sectus.org/registration.php Our special early booking rate of ?45 is available only until 31st October 2006. E7 is an immersive, interactive fantasy event for families who love Harry Potter and will coincide with the release of the film Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix. Co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, the four-day event will take advantage of Penn's gothic campus to recreate Hogwarts on July 12-15, 2007. Families will be sorted into four Houses and compete to earn points in classes and games -- including a Tri-Wizard Tournament, Quidditch, and the ultimate Harry Potter trivia contest -- to win the prized House Cup. On the opening night of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, families attend an exclusive red-carpet movie premiere event that includes interviews, the E7 podcast, and discussion sessions after the film. In addition to family activities, E7 offers age-specific programming: ** Kids (ages 5-8) build their confidence and life science skills in workshops that focus on taking care of the world around us -- both magical and muggle. ** Tweens (ages 9-12) take Hogwarts-style classes and learn scientific methods and deductive reasoning to solve real mysteries over the four days. ** Teens (ages 13-17) stay on campus in a dorm exclusively for them, gather in common rooms for social hours, and join in programming to produce a live podcast of the premiere event, short original film, improvisational comedy sketch, a cappella concert, design for a new magical school, fanfiction, or fanart. ** Adults choose from a variety of interactive seminars and round tables -- featuring experts on parenting and the Harry Potter literature -- and take optional field trips to see Philadelphia's rich historical landscape. (We even have Harry Potter-themed child care available for the "under 5" family members during formal programming.) The E7 registration fee starts at $275 per person and includes all formal and informal programming (except the film premiere and optional field trips) as well as the Opening and Closing Feasts. Lodging options range from on-campus dorms to family suites in on- campus hotels. For more information about Enlightening 2007 or to register online, visit http://Enlightening2007.org. Understandably, this means Paul won't be able to move forward with his plan to upgrade the forums from vbulletin's 2.x to 3.6.x, which we were supposed to have an organizational meeting about today. We need to bring on someone who's got experience in upgrading to vb3.6.x and, ideally, knows how to run four forums, artisticalley and our fic intake system, using one user database. And ideally, we'd need someone to be available to do this in the next 2-3 weeks. Don't worry about skins - we have a slew of them just waiting to be installed. Paul is available for consultation, but is just not able to actually do the project. And we don't really have the funds on hand to pay, but we have some t-shirt, trading cards, book and other leftover conference swag - and a signed stephen king book, too. This is not a fly-by-night, quick to die game! Apply with confidence! The Ministry of Magic, determined to prevent the rise of yet another 'Dark Lord', has gone to extremes to try to get control of the more 'dangerous' segments of the population. A mandatory Registration Process is in effect for anyone known or suspected to have Death Eater ties during the war, if their crimes did not leave them legally incarcerated. Werewolves, too, are Registered, with strict restrictions on curfew, wards permitted around residences, bi-weekly Wand Checks to watch for 'illegal' activity and the like. Much of the Wizarding population feels the Ministry has the right idea, and believes themselves to be 'safer' knowing that people like Snape, the Malfoys, Lupin's pack of werewolves, and others are under close Ministry supervision. Though there are many still at-large who have avoided the Registry process. Hogwarts School, Headed by Minerva McGonagall, has just reopened after reconstruction, and Minerva has announced sweeping changes to the Sorting System, in an effort to increase inter-house unity and combat prejudice amongst the students. These changes are being observed with a critical eye - the Headmistress is already proving almost as eccentric as her predecessor, hiring known Registrants and Werewolves to teach children! Minerva McGonagall has planted herself firmly against the Ministry's institutionalised prejudice. The 'average Joe' just wants to be left alone, to rebuild their lives, open their shops, raise their families, and not live in constant fear anymore! Lucius Malfoy has published a very moving book of his 'Memoirs' regarding his years as a Ministry Spy, and how deeply grieved he is over the things he was forced to see and do in this very difficult and dangerous role. He is slowly, stirring the political cauldron with ambitions to be the next Minister for Magic - if not the Next Dark Lord. There are Death Eaters who were not 'caught', though, waiting and searching for someone to lead them. It has been six months, and they are becoming reckless in their desperation. Fenrir Greyback makes random appearances of terror-inspiration, yet has continued to evade capture. Ministry, Hogwarts, Politics, Criminals - they all combine to leave a great deal of upheaval, even in 'peace'. 1. Game rules: http://community.livejournal.com/inception_ooc/545.html 2.
