Did you mean Jormungand, child of Loki and Angrboda ? Thor kills the 
serpent, but dies in the process. A disappointingly cosy world seems 
to emerge post-Ragnorok, offering no quarter to rabid FEATHERBOAS..

Not sure how far back alchemy goes.. have to look it up. My 
imaginative source was Eddison.
