From quigonginger at yahoo.com Sat Feb 3 07:17:14 2007 From: quigonginger at yahoo.com (quigonginger) Date: Sat, 03 Feb 2007 07:17:14 -0000 Subject: stuck on the Voldie front Message-ID: OK, I got the main LV down to 1382 posts. That's the good news. I have pulled out all the "meaning of name" posts, which include anagrams and why he uses "Lord". I also did a search and pulled out the Evil Overlord Handbook posts. I just did a "find" thing on those and searched "overlord". I figured that I can always add any that I find along the way. These posts have been put into their proper categories. So here's where I keep getting stuck. The categories. I don't know what some of them mean, and others blend so that I don't know where one ends and the other begins. Could I suggest some? Maybe I'm not understanding the definitions that the ones there already have. I don't know. Having read all the 1382 remaining posts at least twice, I think we could go with the following revisions. If that's OK with everyone. I'll put them in outline order so you can see how they'd stack up. I'm not including acronyms at this time. An * indicates a footnote explanation. 1 LV's family A Parents B Slytherin's heir i Meaning of name C Related to other characters* 2 Life before Harry A Orphanage* B Hogwarts years* C Post-Hogwarts/rise to power* 3 Events post-Harry A Godric's Hollow B Albania and pre-rebirth C Graveyard rebirth 4 Plans and powers A Agenda i effects of prophecy ii Evil Overlord Handbook B Possession (general) i of Harry (includes scar connection) ii of Ginny iii of Quirrel 5 Relationships with... A Snape B Dumbledore C DEs and dark creatures 6 Character analyses 7 As a plot device* 8 As a Literary Characterization* 9 RL parallels *1C- This would be for those posts that wonder if he is related to Harry or Lily or Snape..... *2A- Not much at this time, but will be plenty in the future. *2B- This would include his search for his heritage and also his time as "Diary!Tom" *2C- Would include horcrux making when we get to it, and also how he recruited his DEs. *7- what the heck does this mean anyway? *8- Ditto above This is kind of vague at the moment, and I'm sure that some would have to be further divided. I am not sure what the Time travel cat was supposed to be, but I am assuming that it was wondering how LV could be the last ancestor of SS. in that case, it could be a sub- cat of 1B. If there is another meaning, let me know, please. Anyway, I've tried several times to get going on this and always get stuck because I'm not sure what a category entails. Help? Explanations? Chocolate? Not sure I have too much to add to the Penguin's sage advice. Based on my experience with "Snape as literary construct" which is more or less the same thing, *plot device* and *literary characterization* are more or less similar and probably should be merged. And the Evil Overlord Manual is part of that. You might want to just jump into it and sort out what to put where as you go along. That's what I did, though it means that a couple of subcats probably need new names or at least a clear explanation. One thing I've learned from immersing myself in the 2646 Snape posts is that sometimes fewer subcats is better. For example, I've included in "Young Snape and MWPP" (now at 324 posts and I'm not done yet) all posts discussing either young Snape's backstory or his relationship with MWPP, past or present. If I didn't too many threads would have to be split among subcats, and, well, to tell the truth, most people discuss Snape's pre-Hogwarts life in order to explain why MWPP hated him on sight. BTW, I've only got about 350 Snape posts left to review and I hope to knock off about 100 more during the Superbowl. > Ginger, rooting for Chicago tomorrow against her better judgement, > and hoping that no one remembers that she said she hoped to have this > done by Superbowl Sunday. Thanks to Debbie and The Mighty Penguin. I plan to go ahead with the cats I proposed, combining Lit char and plot device until I figure how to divide them. Then I will get back together with the powers that be around here and figure out what's what. Yeah, half-time. I hated Prince back when he was famous. Still can't stand him, Being half in the bag doesn't even help. Will move forward boldly and with purpose when I sober up. Feeling kind of seasick, she places the following message on the community board: Greetings: I have gone through all 1382 remaining Voldyposts and have them divided on a spreadsheet (why, oh why didn't I think of this before?) into many categories. They follow the basic outline that I posted earlier, but there have been additions, and there will be some that need to be further divided, and a few that can just be combined or eliminated. I will spend this weekend getting rid of the hundreds of posts that I have in my "uncode" columns, and will spend next weekend(s) paring down, dividing, combining etc the remaining posts. Then I will contact Miss about setting up new, properly numbered subcats for our favourite Evil Overlord. Message-ID: I have amazed and astonished myself, but I have now read every single post under 2.4.1, our man Severus Snape. My computer immediately celebrated by doing the wonky-feint, hence the 24-hour delay in reporting. There are still 282 posts there. I need new categories to finish clearing out main Snape and make it as empty as Harry), to wit: 1. Snape's Appearance, i.e., the true meaning of his greasy hair, hooked nose, glittery eyes, and fashion sense. We could make it Name and Appearance and cram the etymology posts in, too. 2. Perseus Evans (one of my least favorite theories ever, but it needs a subcat). 3. Snape and the Malfoys (lots of posts about Snape's relationship with Lucius, and they just don't fit anywhere). Or else Snape and his Father Figures, so I could stick the Snape/Dumbledore posts there, too. We're also going to need one for Snape and Occlumency, so we might as well get it done now. The full numbers report (only selected acronyms included): 2.4.1 Severus Snape (282) 2.4.1.1 Snape & love (96) 2.4.1.1.4 LOLLIPOPS (103) 2.4.1.2 Snape transfigured (16) 2.4.1.2.3 Vampire!Snape (125) 2.4.1.3 ESE!Snape (33) 2.4.1.4 Good!Snape (183) 2.4.1.4.3 George & G's Sister Diana (47) 2.4.1.5 Who is Snape working for? (290) 2.4.1.5.3 PRESSURE COOKER (25) 2.4.1.5.8 SUNLIGHT ULTRA (16) 2.4.1.6 Snape Character Studies (186) 2.4.1.7 Young Snape and MWPP (401) 2.4.1.8 Snape & Harry (174) 2.4.1.9 Snape & Teaching Style (300) 2.4.1.10 Snape as Literary Construct (13) I also want to rename two existing categories: 2.4.1.5 Who is Snape working for? to Spy!Snape; this category contains all posts relating to Snape's spying career, including how he fooled Voldemort (or Dumbledore, depending on your views), etc. Posts arguing for Good! or ESE! Snape have been included in the Good! or ESE! subcats. 2.4.1.9 Snape & Teaching Style to Teacher!Snape, because posts about his relationship with the other staff, whether he wants the DADA job, and other matters not related to whether he abuses his students have been included here. Yes, there are still a lot of posts in these categories. I shall get out my machete and get to work. Assistance is welcome! (Apply > Within) Jen, in awe of both: Okay, I'm still lingering around here and willing to help review posts in both of these categories. So Debbie, since you seem to be at that point for the two categories you mentioned, 2.4.1.5 and 2.4.1.9, do you want me to take that first category and you the second, or have you already started cutting? If so, just tell me a block of posts and I'll review, the machete is sharp and ready to go. And Ginger, I'm pretty sure you are in the process of uncoding posts you know for sure don't belong, but from what you said in the past you will have blocks of posts ready for review at some point? Or by saying you are uncoding, does that mean you've already reviewed all posts and already know what needs to be weeded out? (I never did quite get what > you were doing and just bowed to your greatness on this category.) > Ginger: Yes, I have them all sorted into categories, but the main list has a few different ones than what I went with, and they aren't numbered properly. I think they were some sort of a beta version. Anyway, I have a spreadsheet with all my new categories and subdivisions, and I am going to uncode all the ones I am kicking out of Voldy altogether, and then I will go through the other categories and edit them for repeats since after the first 500 posts I got a bit fuzzy on what had been said already and just went on sorting them unless I was sure that it was a rerun. I'm also going to divide out the "LV and dark beings/DEs" cat since it is really long. I'm going to pull out dark beings (or whatever I called them) and possibly give L Malfoy, BC Jr and Wormtail a seperate cat since there are so many of them. I'll have to see on that. There are also some that I had started with having divided, but will end up consolidating. Posession is currently in 4 parts, but none is that big at all, so I might just roll them all together. Some things I added later on in the scheme of things, so earlier posts will be moved appropriately. Anyway, to answer your question: Yes, they have all been read and sorted. I'm sure Debbie could use your machete. I'm not quite ready for it, but I'll keep you in mind should I need advise on things. Debbie: Actually, you're not limited to 2.4.1.5 and 2.4.1.9; all of the subcats would benefit from a review. Take your choice, only I wouldn't start with 2.4.1.9, because I think main Snape still has some posts that belong there (it took me awhile to decide that this should be the place for the DADA job, relationship with McGonagall, etc. posts).
