Yes, the group settings for who can post messages and who has access to the group archives are separate. So, we could turn off posting but still allow members access to the archive. It's also what we used to to do on the Main list in the "shutdown" time at the release of a new book. If Main and Movie were combined, we could still keep Movie open to new posts, if we choose. Other than forcing the Movie and Main people to play together, there's really no reason to turn off posting, is there?
As far as the activity posts are concerned, if you're interested, I believe Yahoo! used to delete inactive groups after X number of days, so the moderators set up those automatic messages to keep the group from going inactive. I don't believe that's a problem anymore, though.
