Eb: <<<I LOVE THIS PLACE!>>>
It is a very pretty place.
Eb: <<<FOOD--I've invariably heard horrible things about British food in
America. Since arriving, I've been to four pubs and eaten here at college 5
times, and everything has been quite good. I also love the 5-meal-a-day
plan... smaller portions, eating more often. Perhaps we Americans ought to
adopt a similar plan. It seems to curtail the excessive overeating we do at
our dinnertimes, and you definitely don't alternate between starvation and
gorging like we do in America.>>>
Which pub food have you had? Which pubs have you visited?
The 5-meal-a-day thing is interesting, but I also like it and found it easier
to cater for when I was doing that type of thing. It is however rare and some
of us only go with two meals a day.
Eb: <<<...didn't come 4000 miles to eat McDonald's.>>>
Do not bother - they are crap.
Eb: <<<FIRST IMPRESSION OF OXFORD--The part of it I've seen definitely can't
be the real world. Far too idyllic.>>>
Oxford student-like already. Sometimes this condition is referred to as the
inability to realise that there may be life outside of a couple of square
miles in the city centre. Many Oxford students suffer from this. The place is
not the real world.
Eb: <<<My accomodations are out of this world--large room with a private bath,
full DSL connection, maid service, a sitting area, and a fully modernized
bath... but you can tell it was built long before anything in my natal city
was even conceived of!>>>
That internet connection is great. The UK academic system is good for that.
And those sorts of rooms are so Oxbrdige and nowhere else.
Eb: <<<Only problem is, I hear teachers here only make 150 pounds a
week--which, after converting to dollars, sounds ridiculous to me.>>>
Possibly the teachers on your program do earn that little. They are paid only
a small amount as part of their salary goes towards accommodation and other
living costs. A UK teacher's salary is about ?20,000 a year ($30,000).
Eb: <<<Question--I have one friend from the program who is definitely
interested in meeting on Sunday, and perhaps several more will want to join
us. Is this all right with everyone? Please let me know...>>>
Fine by me. Hopefully we will not run out of room in the pub. I believe we are
into double figures now.
Simon
PS: Welcome to this country and the same to Scott as well.
PPS: See you on Sunday
