Well, maybe.  Or it could just be that Columbus and crew wanted to 
wow us with their cool special effects.  The way the cat was done was 
very spooky, and Norbert was sensational.  Also, leaving half of the 
Norbert subplot in the movie could have been a compromise measure -- 
maybe Columbus' daughter cried when he told her he had to take 
Norbert out.
