I think the book was far from clear in specifying what happened to
Quirrell. Harry did indeed go for his face, to keep him from getting to
his wand when it appeared Quirrell was about to curse him. And
Dumbledore tells Harry something like, "You were doing quite well on
your own." I don't think the movie took too many liberties, here. At
least Quirrell is definitively dead, a point the book never make in so
many words, and given JKR's input, I think we can trust that. I don't
see that defending yourself makes you a murderer, in any case.
