In my opinion I believe it could be a player of the year type award. 
As JKR is British I would think she would base it on what she knows 
of English schools, and lots of Secondary schools tend to have 
similar awards passed down over the years with the names of winners 
having different smaller shields. I know we have one in the school 
where I work..
