Although Rickman's portrayal was perhaps not as grotesque as Snape was described in the books, I don't really think he's playing him as a misunderstood teddy. Still, Lord, I have to agree with you: that would be a horrible developent! I love the character as he is.
AND I don't want this all to turn out to be "wounded Snape, torturing himself over the torch he has carried for Lily Evans, turned into a reclusive monster by the cruelty of his classmates....." He's not the Grinch, dammit. Let's hope Ron Howard never gets his hands on a piece of the franchise!
