I'm still keeping one toe firmly rooted in skepticism, but this story 
has come up several places, including IMDb.  There may be a bit more 
weight behind it than the usual speculation...

I'm not sure I can look at McKellan in a robe and long white beard 
and be able to put Gandalf firmly to one side, but he's a talented 
enough actor that I'm willing to try.
