I'd take this with a grain of salt. The interview that Rosie O'Donnell
had with the actual Daniel gave a different impression (I'm working on
the transcript of the show and will have it finished soon). His parent
were tentative for him going up for the part, because they didn't want
him to be disappointed, but I got the impression that they are very
reasonable folks. I also don't think Columbus would be willing to work
with unreasonable or overly demanding people after his experience with
Culkin in the Home Alone movies.
My personal viewpoint is that Dan actually has some talent, where Tori
Spelling does not. I think Daniel is young, so he might stammer a
smidge, but that comes with practice, and I think we'll see great things
from him in the future. That's my hope at least.
