Well see this is where we but heads. Releasing the trailer only with Scooby Doo does increase their profits though, there are many (not on this list obviously) who are buying tickets just to see the trailer. Thus their profits go up. Especially since the movie actually..sucked. (Er, Scooby not CoS)
<Making the trailer widely available for
download on the internet raises the visibility of the movie and
engenders good fan relations, a MUCH better business tactic than,
say, pissing off fans by saying "go pay to see Scooby Doo and then
maybe you will see the trailer".>
I would like to state again that Warner brothers has no fan relations. This part of their buisness sense was removed a long time ago. Although they seem to have gotten a bit better with the Harry Potter fandom it really doesn't shock me that they think about only the bottom line. I agree that releasing the trailer online would be a smart buisness move. This time last year we had three trailers out. One for each season, but that was before the first movie, before we got a look at everything and got to judge...now we're just walking wallets to them.
<Besides, Harry Potter has a BROAD
appeal, not just for kids, so there are plenty of people who want to
see the trailer that have no interest in Scooby Doo.>
There's also fans of Scooby who have no interest in Harry...big deal. Warner Brother likes market research and if they're little survey people tell them to put the trailer on with Scooby then by golly that's what they'll do.
<So I believe that not releasing the trailer on the internet makes
POOR business sense (in addition to lousy fan relations), but this is
a concept often misunderstood by business people.>
As I said before, I agree with the statements...doesn't mean Warner Brothers is going to do it. I agree that it would be good buisness practice for television networks to put past episodes up for downloading so that people can catch up and thus watch the new episodes but Warner Brothers doesn't like that idea either. Just because something's a good idea for buisness and for fan relations doesn't mean the big guys are listening.
<So just because Warner Bros. isn't known for their fan relations,
does that mean we should give them a free ride? No, we should hold
them accountable for their actions and try to influence a change for
the positive.>
Umm, have you ever dealt with Warner Brothers? I have. In 1999 Warner Brothers started attacking Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan sites. I was one of those that fought to keep fan-sites open. I'm not saying give them a free ride I'm saying leave it alone it's just a trailer. I'm glad that Warner Brothers has learned what little fan sense it has in regards to the Harry Potter fandom but I've seen what they can do and no, I don't wish to attempt to influence a company that doesn't care one way or another. Not worth the time (or the aggravation) again. Sorry but AOL Time Warner and fan relations are a very touchy subject for me.
<Studios MUST be held accountable because even though they are
dealing with money and profit, they are also handling cherished
institutions and art that holds a more important place in the public
consciousness, and we can't let them slide just because they THINK
they can make a few extra bucks.

Hollywood only cares about the bottom-line dear. Studios aren't held accountable for much of anything these days. While it would be fun to think that our voices could change their minds and get us what we want, the sad truth is it can't and I don't see a fight worth fighting here. It's a trailer. Two minutes of movie that if get watched enough get boring. Besides, why protest something so minute that will last about three weeks before the trailer's attached to another movie, something you may want to see.
It's a long wait until November 15th and there's a lot of movies to be released before them. Perhaps you might find your interest in going to see the Powerpuff Girls or Stuart Little 2 (no I'm not trying to offend you these were just two of the movies who's trailers I saw and could guess that might have the CoS trailer attached to).
But just to make the point of this email clear, which seems to have been lost. I do agree with you on some points, that releasing the trailer would be in WB's best interest, but most likely, isn't going to happen. But I don't see this as something to fight over. This is a 'pick and choose' your battles situation and when it comes down to fighting over the internet release of a trailer or making sure an entire fandom doesn't disappear...I'm going with the fandom issue.

Who knows she went horribly off topic so blame it on the meds...evil meds.

Thesulac: There's an entire hotel here just full of tortured souls who could really use your help. Whaddya say?
Angel: Take 'em all.
