I don't see how he can have too much licence before the books 5-7
are finished. The slightest change can have major consequences in the
future plots, almost precluding them from being filmed!
Imagine if PS was adapted before PoA had been written. Imagine
someone deciding that rats are disgusting and let's Ron have a toad
instead - PoA goes out of the window. Or at least Crookshanks becomes
a stork. ;-)
So unless WB decided they stop after GoF, I don't see big "artistic
licence" possible.
