Actually that is not entirely true. We have the 16x9 Sony (the widescreen), and most widescreen movies, including PS, are formatted to still have the black bars at the top and bottom to "preserve the theatrical experience for our home use". We thought our tv was broken when we first hooked it up at Christmas. Now we have noticed that most movies you will still get the black bars even with "widescreen" formats. :)
