Personally, I've thought he discourages the idea because he's out as
director and would like the series to fail and end. Consider, Couron
is a racy choice for PoA (did anyone actually see the Mexican
release of Y Tu Mama Tambien?) and if the movie fails it could
potentially end the series. I say this because as good as CoS was,
it was a poorly cut/edited movie with substandard sound (did you
really think Dobby was crying loudly at Privet Drive?) and several
scenes where the direction was obviously at fault in how the actors
played the part (consider Wood's reaction to the match being
cancelled -- underplayed?). I suspect that this had something to do
with the change of directors.
Now Columbus talks down the possibility of the series continuing
after GoF. If PoA fails, no matter how good GoF turns out (and let's
be real, if PoA fails there'll be less money in making GoF) it won't
do as well and the 'magic' will seem to be over. On the other hand,
if the man who must have some influence over the young actors keeps
saying maybe they won't want to return perhaps they'll begin to
prick at the idea themselves, and let's face it a Harry Potter movie
without the Trio just won't work. If either of these two
possibilites happen then Columbus goes down as the only one to make
a success of Harry Potter in movies, versus if PoA is good and makes
money then he is just one of two (or more?) directors who make
movies. It will be the 'franchise' itself that is the thing, not the
director.
