I think that it was put in to give Harry a reason to ask the Hat not to put
him in Slytherin. In the book, Harry first met Malfoy in Diagon Alley and
decided then that he didn't want to be in Slytherin. The movie omitted that
scene, so there had to be some rationale for Harry choosing not to be put
into the same house as Malfoy.
