Don't get me wrong Dan, (and i do apologize for not making this clear previously) But I think your Idea has some definite interest. I was merely stating the unliklihood of such a "gruesome" opening event. While I agree that digressions in a story so it "fits" better on the screen can make a film story better then a book story, I would disagree that risks need to be taken just for the sake of them. They need to be made if the make sense. For your example of LotR, the small sub-stories that evoled was less about risk and more about film pacing. It gave additonal sequences to otherwise larger characters in the novels becuase to flesh out these characters, the film would be 6 hours long.
However, I must still hold the belief that your opening sequence would not work for one more claim. This is a children's film. The major demographic that this film and story speaks to is adolcents. Therefore, risks, and linear storytelling is what we are stuck with. A child would not want to see a Harry Potter story different from what they read. They want to see the story that they read playing out in front of their eyes.
