It's my thought that they may have "taken" the attack on Snape away from the
kids--bad image to portray or something--and "given" it to Sirius or Lupin.
Or had Snape not enter the Shack at all (aaagh!) or regain consciousness in
time to defend them.

Some of Snape's dialogue in the Shack has often been interpreted as
protective--while it seems clear that he chased after Lupin in the hope of
catching Sirius (the kids were already in the Shack, and thus off the Map),
he did mention he was "saving their neck" and expressed some frustration
that they weren't grateful at all. I'm betting this scene is drawing on
that.

Well, Harry's holding the map. It could be when Snape is challenging him on
that--although Harry's dressed like he is in the Shack scenes.
