I'm commenting on my own comment since there were a few
things I forgot to include yesterday, but first, a couple of
questions:
What does "twee" mean?
I think I know what TSP refers to, but what does it stand for?
On to comments: There have been several posts recently about
book-film correspondence, which is as it should be. I'd just like
to say generally, that although at the beginning I longed for all my
favourite bits to be included and for the movie to be as close to
the book as possible, I'm now beginning to change my mind. On
non-hp matters, I've always been of the opinion that the original
is always best, and nothing else can be expected, i.e. books are
always better than movies made from them, movies are always
better than books written from the movie (more rare, but it
happens.) Books and movies require such widely differing
storytelling techniques that the only true-to-the-letter movie
adaptation of a book would be moving pictures with a voiceover
and the occasional dialoguse. Besides, not all of what's
described in a book could be visually illustrated anyway. (And
what a dreadful movie it would make!)
Let's not hope for a movie that merely illustrates the book,
however enchanting the illustrations may be. Let's hope for a
movie that tells a story like only a movie can. To be true to the
letter doesn't guarantee being true to the spirit of a book. Let's
hope for the spirit of Harry & Co to sweep us off our feet. If it
takes some changes in presenting the major events--so be it. If
dementors gliding has been translated on screen to allow them
even to fly (have you read the latest set-report on mugglenet?) so
be it, bring it on: I'm ready for a new approach.
I love Harry & Co with a passion, and it can be hard to see
something tampered with that one loves so well, but let's face it:
Harry will be around for a long time. Maybe even in our lifetimes
we'll see other adaptations, just like new film versions of
Dickens' novels keep popping up. This is just the beginning.
Might as well get used to it. Pick out the good stuff and leave the
rest. We can't all be pleased about everything, but I'm preparing
to be really pleased with Cuaron...
BTW Without a firm idea of Nevilles Gran, I had rather pictured
Snape in some kind of evening dress--slinky and silky with a low
neckline and wobbly high-heeled shoes....But the version of her
outfit we see in the movie is more consistent with Neville's
gran's personality, I think.
