What a great double feature! There was never anything kid-oriented showing
with Shrek 2 at our drive-in, and I was afraid my kids would do exactly what
your son did!
I was also worried about my kids' reactions to the HP movies. They were not
quite 3 and 5 when SS came out, and I couldn't find anybody with small children
who had seen it until it was nearly gone from the cheap theatres. I rarely
have time to go to the movies without my kids, so it was difficult to preview
it for myself. When I finally found a coworker with small kids who assured me
it wasn't too scary, we went, and my kids were fine. Same with CoS a year
later, which I did get to preview, and took them to see the following day.
PoA, on the other hand, is a bit more subtle in its scariness. My son (now 5)
doesn't seem to understand what's scary about it, while my daughter (going on
8) does. She doesn't consider it "too" scary, but it might be a cue to me to
be careful when GoF comes out. What kids are scared of changes over time as
they come to understand new things. And as you say, it really depends on the
kids. PoA has been a great teaching tool for us too (dementors and how to deal
with threatening situations).
