I think I read in canon somewhere (can't think where) that the Animagus
form
chooses the wizard, sort of -- that you're predisposed to be a certain kind
of animal, just as your Patronus will be a certain thing that you don't
specify -- what comes out of your wand is a reflection of something in your
personality. I believe I read that in canon or in a JKR interview -- sure
wish I
could remember which, or where! (IOW, they couldn't "choose" to be
werewolves
-- something in them made them become what they were -- stag, dog, rat).

[from Valerie]
That makes sense...
James/stag: the strutting "buck", vying for attention (Snape would love
that!)
Peter/rat: well, that goes without saying...
Sirius/dog: hmmm...that demands a little more inspection. (but then again, I
love deliberating about Sirius! :-)
He's a bit dark and moody and growly in character? His laugh is "like a
bark". But then again, that is Sirius post-Azkaban. Teen Sirius,
pre-Azkaban, was portrayed as a good-looking, aloof, rich kid with a bit of
a mean-spirited streak in him (specifically for Snape, but perhaps there
were other unfortunate "geeks" that he and James preyed on?) In character he
was quite a bit like the Draco Malfoy of today, no?
And Harry I would equate with Lupin (more gentle, insecure, has a
conscience).
My 2 knuts! :-)
