 <snip>
Dogs were associated with priests since priests were thought of as watchdogs
against the devil.
[Isn't THAT interesting!? Certainly makes sense as in the OotP dream scene
that Harry had of Sirius protecting the prophecy and being attacked by the
devil himself-Voldemort! ]

<snip>
Dogs are symbols of courage, vigilancy and loyal fidelity.
[Yes, that is Sirius as well, especially in his relationship with James.]

<snip>
All of the Southwest tribes had dogs. It has been reported that all breeds
of dogs are descendants of the wolf, but even though the early dogs were
considered part "wild", they were fiercely loyal to their owners.
[as Sirius was to Remus-his wolf-friend?]

Historically, dogs have been portrayed as the guardians of ancient secrets,
hidden treasures, and infants.
[Interesting!!]

<snip>
Dog - Signifying the loyalty and that the master was worth loving.
[Sirius's relationship to Harry!]

Yes, I know it's all speculation, and did JKR really think that in-depth
about it when naming the character of Sirius? Dunno, but it's fascinating,
nonetheless to ponder!
Does the name of Sirius's brother, Regulus, have any celestial significance?

Thanks for sharing, Sherry!

Me too! Here are a few tidbits I found when I Googled on "symbolism dog"
(which returned 213,000 hits). Certainly some of these apply to Sirius.

The dog is the emblem of faithfulness and guardianship... Dogs are symbols
of
courage, vigilancy and loyal fidelity.

Dog - Signifying the loyalty and that the master was worth loving.

Of course there are many, many more. That guardianship thing comes up
frequently, which is a bit disconcerting - Harry is already beginning to
lose
his guardians. Hopefully he can still figure out that he is "worth loving"
without Sirius.

Or it could just be that he was named after the Dog Star.
