Sirius may 'clean up' later, but he's NEVER described as being particularily
'sexy' or goodlooking (actually, he only cleans up briefly before letting
himself go again). After all those years of being worn down in prison, its not
like he could just get a haircut and be the same again. Sirius is my favorite
character and I *never* imagined him as good-looking and it didn't occur to me
that he could be until I got into the fandom. In PoA, he's described as being
'handsome' which I assumed meant in contrast to looking like a corpse. And in
OoP his YOUNGER self is described as being very attractive, but that was 20
years before PoA, plenty of people change from teenage years until adulthood, even
without being in prison for 12 years.
In case you can't tell, I think Gary Oldman is a *perfect* choice for Sirius
(and I didn't know who he was until he was cast, since then I've watched a
bunch of his movies and he's fantastic in every one). Sirius is a very intense
character, he sort of carries his heart on his sleeve, not holding anything
back, any actor, attractive or not would have to be able to bring that across on
screen. (believe it or not, by the way, Gary Oldman can be not bad looking if
he's fixed up the right way, its just so few of his roles call for someone
good-looking, I suggest you rent 'Rosencranzt and Guildenstern Are Dead' or 'The
Scarlet Letter').
As for Colin Firth, I like him, but he's far too "soft" (for lack of a better
word) for Sirius. I can't really see him coming across as a grizzled
half-insane murderer, nor can I see him holding his own against Snape.
