Someone I know watched the movie with their parents, who had no clue
about the books at all, and when Hermione gives Harry that giant hug
at the end, and then has the weird moment with Ron, their mom or dad
(can't remember which) said, what, she's supposed to like both of them?
As to demographic differences in shippers, I can only speak for
myself. I'm mid-twenites, married with two kids.
I think JKR's statement (on her website) has only done one thing: to
make each of us, whatever our position, even more entrenched in our
favorite ship. The H/R shippers say it proves their point, we H/H
argue it confirms our suspicions, and we aren't likely to hear any
more from her until at least book 6. I don't know if she meant it to
be still ambiguous, but there it is.
My support for H/H comes from reading the subtext and gauging the true
depth of feeling between these characters. (Does this belong on the
book list?) Yes, I think Ron has a crush on her, and I can see a
first boyfriend possibility, maybe, but not much more, unless he grows
up a whole bunch, and I don't know that two books is enough to do it
in (not doubting the storyweaving powers of Ms. Rowling). I think
Harry and Hermione spend a lot of time fending off suspicion that they
are a couple, and a lot of times when this happens it's because other
people can see what those in the friendship can't. Notice nobody goes
around accusing Ron and Hermione of dating? It's certainly obvious to
Padma that Rom would rather have asked Hermione, but I don't think the
feelings are necessarily mutual.

who apologizes that a good chunk of this should be on a different list
