For Dan R. it would be pretty hard to say that there wasn't some
subliminal element of 'wishful thinking'. If Harry is alive in the end
there is always a chance that somebody will want to extend the
franchise with new stories not specifically written by Rowling but
simply based on her characters; sort of a Hollywood version of fan
fiction. That leaves things open ended for Dan; always a chance he'll
be called back to revisit his role.
But I think it is more likely that Dan reach a conclusion that many
many many other people have reached. In the main group, and in
virtually every HP discussion group many variations of 'Harry dies'
have been proposed. I've even speculated on several possible
situations myself. So this is not a new idea, many many fan besides
Dan have considered it.
I've also pointed out before that a 'tragedy' is a prefectly valid and
very common framework for stories, plays, and movies. It's not very
common or popular in the USA, but in other world cultures, it is
popular and common. There is the classic Greek Tragedy. Chinese and
Mexican audiences are know to love a good tragedy, or a sad or
ambiguous ending.
As an example, "Y Tu Mamá También", the recent movie by Alfanso
Cuaron, had a somewhat melancholy ending.
Just recently, many people speculated that we may have a very
bittersweet ending. Harry may live, but the price that he has to pay
to win will be horribly and tragically high. Not quite a tragedy, but
very close.
I've speculated that Harry will die, but only temporarily (long story).
So there is some precedence for heroes dying in the end, and Dan's
idea in not new, unique, or original. If you dare search through the
backlog of post in the main HP_for_Grownups group, you will find many
many discussion on it.
Just passing it along.
