Actually, very very few actors if any as far as I am aware and of 
course I could be wrong have the power to "direct the director". Am 
I making sense?

IMO, no matter how Gambon WANTS to play Dumbledore, he will play the 
part the way director wants him to. It is not up to him, so to 
speak. Again, as far as I know.

I mean, he can suggest something to the director, like some 
improvisations to the scene, but if director does not like it, he 
will not be allowed to play it that way.

So, whether Gambon suggested to play the scene in question that way 
or not, it HAD TO pass the approval of the director.
