Message-ID: Hello all, This is my first time posting to this group, so please forgive me if this is something that ha already been discussed, I didn't see it in previous threads. Can anyone tell me where I can find information on Patrick Doyle, the new composer for GoF. Does anyone have any idea why John Williams isn't the composer any longer? I think he's brillant, he does all the composing for all the blockbuster films... Thank you! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4319F01A.8070508@mail.rochester.edu> My best bet would be that Williams simply didn't want to continue. Patrick Doyle is AMAZING, though, so don't worry too much. He made his brilliant movie scoring debut with Henry V, an absolutely breathtaking score. You can check out all his credits on imdb (http://imdb.com/name/nm0236462/). He's done all of the films Kenneth Branagh directed, I believe, along with many others. I've also heard that he WILL be including themes Williams established in the first three scores, so it sounds great to me. While no one can match Williams for pure themework (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Close Encounters, etc.), I personally think Doyle's work is better as a whole. --Taryn laurenmcoakley wrote: >Hello all, > >This is my first time posting to this group, so please forgive me if >this is something that ha already been discussed, I didn't see it in >previous threads. > >Can anyone tell me where I can find information on Patrick Doyle, the >new composer for GoF. My standby for finding info on any movie-related person is http://www.imdb.com . John Williams is one of my favorites too, and I'm a little disappointed that he's dumping Potter. However, he is in great demand and usually does about 5 films a year (plus he's no spring chicken). He may have simply got a better offer, or else WB just wanted a different sound. Patrick Doyle is also wonderful and has done quite a few fantasy films (he's currently doing Eragon!). My personal favorites of his are Quest for Camelot (animated) and A Little Princess (directed by Alfonso Cuaron, who directed Azkaban). Doyle also did Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bridget Jones's Diary. Go look on IMDb. You'll be impressed, or at least reassured. Well, I have to join GulPlum's crusade once again and encourage you to buy the WIDESCREEN edition if you do decide to invest in the DVDs. At least for PoA, since you apparently don't have it, and the widescreen/fullscreen difference is most important on that one. SS and CoS have some interesting extras on the DVD, but others can probably speak for the extras better than I can. SS has a fun little trivia quiz to get to the deleted scenes (ironically, one of the sets of trivia questions is actually answered IN a deleted scene ;-). Unfortunately they don't have extended editions (deleted scenes edited back into the film) for any of them so far. There are some interesting interviews on CoS as well. Since the three-movie set is nearly three times the price of the individuals, it might be worth it to pick up PoA on DVD, and then decide if you want the other two on DVD. You'd end up spending only a few dollars more if you end up buying the first two (unless you can find the set on major sale), and you wouldn't have the box, which frankly in my house would last about two days anyway. (The "huh" isn't addressed to Manda, but to Warners UK for making a big deal about this now). Incidentally (and I've been meaning to say this for *ages*), I am seriously p*ssed off at Warners Home Entertainment UK for their weird approach to packaging HP DVDs. While I appreciate that they changed their policy of producing cardboard "digipack" DVD covers in favour of standard plastic keep-cases, I think they could have produced a PoA digipack for those who were collecting the set. Not to mention that the designs of the spines are all slightly different and don't line up properly on the shelf. This is a serious lack of attention to detail which is pretty typical of the money-grabbing Warners. -- Richard, previously AKA GulPlum From sgarfio at yahoo.com Mon Sep 19 21:15:59 2005 From: sgarfio at yahoo.com (Sherry Garfio) Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 14:15:59 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [HPFGU-Movie] Re: DVD movies In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20050919211559.23710.qmail@web53205.mail.yahoo.com> --- geebsy wrote: > Roxane: > Thanks for the advice. And HOW could they chop up that first Potions class??? Alan Rickman rocks. Oh yeah, you probably haven't seen it, but there is an extended version of this scene in the "deleted scenes" on SS, where Harry suggests that he ask Hermione since she seems to know the answers to his questions, and Snape gives him hell. It establishes Snape's hatred for Harry in no uncertain terms. > I think I will just pick up Azkaban then, and wait and see. > BTW: The movies are for me...not my kids. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I know! I just get so excited every time I open my e-mail and my link to Leaky has yet more new photos and trailers! I hope the next 2 months fly by! I thought the Sirius face in the fire was ultra creepy too. Was that really Gary Oldman???! He is listed on the credits for this movie, so I guess it is; it just didn?t look or sound like him. I think what they did was pretty clever, special effects-wise. But I too, just pictured a full, disembodied head floating in the fire. And what about LV?!?!?! No way is that gorgeous Ralph Fiennes! He must?ve spent hours and hours in make-up! I didn?t want to see it (to save the surprise for the movie), but I just couldn?t resist watching the trailer. The Dark Mark on film is much scarier than is pictured on the American book cover of HBP. I don?t think Fleur looks as ?irresistible? as I had imagined. She is supposed to be a blond goddess after all. She looks pretty plain to me with her pony tail. I think Mad Eye looks rather wicked. I didn?t picture the ?eye? strapped on like that though. But it is creepily effective especially if you go on Leaky and look at the take-by-take screen caps of the trailer and the camera is swirling around as though we are looking through his eye at Harry/Ron. Looks like they pulled out all the stops on the special effects in this film! The Durmstrang ship emerging from the water is just as I imagined it. Love the adorable scene when Harry asks Cho to the ball. Is he a cutey or what?! This book is truly the most exciting of them all. It will make for a wonderfully thrilling 2.5 hours!!! I don't know if he's just matured as an actor or if the new director is that much better, but every scene with Dan shows real maturity in the acting now -- I was blown away by it, and I've always thought he was a good actor! Maybe this time he'll get nominated for an Oscar (fingers tightly crossed) and the movie will rate more than just special effects nominations!! I agree, the special effects so far are spectacular! I can't wait for the movie! Did you know there's a high-def, FULL SCREEN version of the trailer online now at Moviefone.com? I watched them on the Leaky Cauldron and they were awesome. You can choose your player - http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/3. It is under September 15. But you can try this: http://raincloud.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/harrypotter/trailer_hi.mov which is the Quicktime version. Too cool. I am way excited now. Everything just looks great. I did think Fleur was slightly different than I imagined but she is still a lovely girl. I also liked looking at the photos from the Japanese magazine. Haven't figured out who that is with Harry in the white towel. It doesn't quite look like Emma or Bonnie and certainly isn't Ron (too small of a nose for one thing). These pictures are also on The Leaky Cauldron. I am going to have to start my countdown since we are under 60 days. I can scarcely wait. Guess I better behave and act my age - my husband told me while we were all watching the trailer this weekend that I was worse than our sons (who are 13 and 10). Anyway, try the links from leaky - I couldn't see the ones on Moviefone because they require some sort of software download and since I didn't know it, I didn't try it. Theresa PS: Ralph looks so creepy. The make up artist deserve kudos for that. It's probably referring to the security preferences on your browser. On Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options. On the popup, select the Security tab. Click the Custom Level button at the bottom, scroll through for anything that says "ActiveX" and enable them, or if you can, simply use the slider for "Security level for this zone" to lower your security level. You should probably reset anything you change after you're done. If you're using something other that Internet Explorer, write back and I or someone else can help you do the equivalent thing. BTW, this file is 30.9 MB. I'm on broadband and it's only downloaded 35% of it while I was typing this. But it's probably worth it! Good luck! It was pointed out to me when I complained before that the 'choir director' in POA wasn't Flitwick; Davis was simply billed as a wizard rather than Flitwick. I thought the original Flitwick was so cute; I don't understand why they had to change him. Moody's eye did surprise me too, but I don't see how else they could have given him a 'real' magic eye! No "how about if..." about this, since those who wish to keep the magic on the printed page *and* those who wish to let the movie moguls do what they will with their Inferius-like adaptations (and buy tickets to see the said adaptations) *both* can already do as they wish at this time. CMC: > My feeling is that none of the books should have been cinematically > rendered at least until all seven books were completed. This I agree with - foreshadowing is hard to do well and well-nigh impossible (IMO) to do when you don't know what you're trying to foreshadow. OotP is estimated to cost more than $150 million so as soon as we raise about seven times that much, maybe we'd have a shot at re-making the films after Book 7 is out. CMC: > I also feel an > animated version - which would have given the story line a greater > prominence than the SPFX - would have been vastly preferable. Hmm...I rather suspect that an animated version helmed by Columbus would not have been vastly different in spirit from the live-action versions. Whether the story line gets greater prominence than the SFX depends more on the kind of story the director wants to tell than on whether the story gets told in animation or in live action. There are also so many variables involved that this aspect may not deserve the preference you accord it. Knowing how the entire story (all 7 books) ends, however, is surely inarguably preferable to groping in the dark as to motivations and subtext, which to some extent, the cast and crew are stuck with doing at this time. CMC: > - (who has not seen Movies One Two and Three, and who will not > see Movies Four Five Six and Seven) Nice to have the choice, right?
