finally a sci-fi, fantasy series without the rockum-sockum testosterone

Sort of like Harry Potter, but with politics, mythology and eco-feminism mixed with their sci-fi/fantasy:I adored the Lord of the Rings, and thought hey, Troy would be interesting, has Orlando Bloom who was Legolas from the Ring series.

But Troy was barely watchable, what with their Troy preistesses who could easily be Nicki Hilton in a toga. And Helen as the adolescent boy's wet dream who doesn't have anything interesting to say. The movie was made so much worse by the fact that I just came across a great new fantasy/scifi series called Polis, the first book is A Loop in Time, by Rowena Wright. Awesome...a little reference to Tolkien in a imaginary race of immortals called Ringgolds (mortals are called Saplings, like frail trees), and a reference to Star Trek Next Gen, with the Q-computer which tracks the entire continuum of time and space, sort of like my favorite Q character. Check it out, got some great reviews, like from top Amazon reviewer Harriett Klausner, who called it a "superb complex time-space continuum thriller."

Oh yeah, the references to Troy. The Polis series melds the ancient and the contemporary worlds, and Rowena Wright refers to a new book called The Oldest Europeans. What a well thought-out read. But not mainstream, unless you think the masses can stomache the idea the Helen was a monarch and sacred preistess who conferred sovereignty. In other words, she could have been an ugly dog, but she was worth fighting for because she was an ambassador and diplomat in a matriarchal and matrilineal world. The Trojan war was part a long compaign on the part of the patriarchal Greeks to destroy the older cultures of Parthia and Persia, also of the Amazons, their neighbors who lived around the Black Sea. The ancient Greeks didn't have much use for women outside of house slaves and procreation, note Alexander and his tutors the homosexual Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle.

Like I said, in light of this well-supported information, Hollywood's attempts to cash in on the current interest in our cultural origins are laughable and crass. Give us something well-done like Jackson's Ring series, true to the background, and yes, dare we ask this, something that opens new cultural doors instead of re-hashing the tried and true action flick?
