Trouble is in some markets that doesn't always mean a general release in your local multiplex. Here it will probably be in our local 'art cinema'! This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Harry Potter books in the country where it all began. Sectus will be held in the heart of the capital, close to Regent's Park and within easy walking distance of Oxford Circus, Madame Tussaud's and King's Cross. Sectus will comprise a varied mixture of academic papers, panels, informal discussions and workshops. We already have Steve Vander Ark, creator of the Harry Potter Lexicon, confirmed as a guest speaker, and some exciting proposals lined up from all areas of fandom. Call for Papers For the academic side of the programming, we're seeking papers on a wide range of topics - the following are just some suggested themes: * - Science and technology.* Can science be said to exist in the Wizarding World, and if so, how far does it reflect our real-world knowledge? Is magic bound by the laws of physics *- Mythology, alchemy and symbolism.* How myths and legends support Rowling's storytelling, and how an examination of alchemical theory and symbolism can help us unravel the secrets within the text *- Education*. The portrayal of education in the Wizarding World, the effective use of Rowling's books in real-world education and is the 'reading revolution' a myth? *- Social and political issues*. Explorations of class, race, gender and sexuality in the narrative, the Wizarding World and/or derived fan works. - *Fandom history*. From paper to screen - how would the HP fandom have fared without the internet, and what lies ahead for the fandom after the publication of the seventh book? *- Fandom issues. * Staying on the right side of international law, fan fiction vs. fan art, gender and the fan community. Proposals for papers on these or other topics, or for any other events, should be sent to submissions at sectus.org. Full guidelines for submission can be found at http://www.sectus.org/programme.php The deadline for submitting proposals is 31st January 2007. Extra-curricular activities: As well as the academic side of the conference, we will be running a unique Wizarding Tournament. This is open to all attendees, and will consist of three tasks, culminating in a treasure hunt around London. At the centre of the tournament will be Not the Yule Ball, a formal dinner and opportunity for some well-mannered frivolity. Entertainment will be provided by ZHL Strings, a string quartet renowned for their energetic performances. Tickets are not included in the registration price, and will be on sale soon. Outside the conference: For those who want to extend their trip into a full holiday, we're offering two options. Starting on 14th July 2007, we will be running a series of sighseeing trips and activities designed to help you make the most out of your stay in London. As well as the usual sights, we're planning a themed medieval banquet and a cruise down the Thames. All suggestions are accepted: please email info at sectus.org with your preferences. Also in the works is a trip to Alnwick Castle, better known as Hogwarts from the first two films. This trip is to be held on Wednesday July 18th, and will include a tour of all the filming locations in the castle, lunch in the castle restaurant, organised games and a themed gift bag. Tickets for this trip will be on sale shortly: please watch the website and/or LJ community (sectus_2007) for details. All pre-conference events will be organised on an informal basis, and are subject to availability and demand. Payment for some events may be required in advance. If you're looking for a way to relax after a busy conference weekend in London, you might be interested in our Residential Course. >From Monday 23rd July until Sunday 29th, we will have exclusive use of a bunkhouse in an isolated part of Snowdonia, North Wales. As well as the academic programming, which will consist of presentations and roundtable-style discussions, there will be plenty of opportunity to relax and explore your surroundings in one of the most unspoiled areas of Britain. The cost of the Residential Course is ?250 (payable in installments), which includes travel to and from London, six nights' accommodation and all meals for the duration of our stay. Further details and a booking form are available at http://www.sectus.org/residential.php Please note that places on the Residential Course are extremely limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Where your money goes Sectus is completely non-profit and run entirely by volunteers. Unlike other conferences, everyone involved in running Sectus pays the same registration, accommodation and travel as everyone else. Any surplus resulting from the event, as well as any proceeds from our Charity Auction, will go directly to Book Aid International, an organisation who work to provide books to libraries, hospitals, refugee camps and schools in the developing world. We hope you will join us in supporting this worthy cause. Registration and where to find out more You can book for Sectus on our website, at http://www.sectus.org/registration.php Our special early booking rate of ?45 is available only until 31st October 2006. We have the following options for those wanting to be kept informed of updates: Our website: www.sectus.org LJ announcements community: sectus_2007 LJ discussion community: sectus_chat Additionally, all major announcements will be made to the HPfGU lists and distributed to the major websites. If you run a website and would like to receive press releases, please email chair at sectus.org. Everyone registered for the conference will receive our newsletter, The Snake's Quill, direct to their inbox. If you have any queries, please feel free to contact me directly, off-list. Like I said, just my two knuts. Yes, I understand. But Ginny was important in film two. Even if the reporter has just seen the films, he would have to know her name. But, as a reporter, he must know what people want to know about the film and I doubt a kiss is such a thrilling thing. He would have to have heard about an important death in book five, for instance. And he could just ask the director and Dan about what important scenes they would like to mention. But all he wanted to know about was the kiss and the relationship between Dan and Katie. What kind of a question was "Is he a good kisser"? What could Katie possibly answer? And, of course the press concluded a lot of *** from her obvious answer. These are just a few examples why I think the opportunity of interviewing the director, Dan and Katie was given to the wrong person. And I'm frustrated, because I want to know more about Sirius and Ginny in the film and I'm sure the press won't make the right questions. Also note that I saw a release date of Sept 9, so maybe, pure speculation, Sept 9 for NY and LA, and Oct 13 for general release. The reviews have been generally positive, with everyone raving about Julie Walters. Some have criticized Rupert performance as 'wooden' but I have to wonder if they understand that in the beginning that is exactly how the characters is, very inhibited and restrained. It is only after meeting the Julie Walters character that he begins to loosen up. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, unfortunately now that I've moved, the nearest independant film theater is 100 miles away. No problem, I just go up early and make a day of it. Was he supposed to be > playing "Harry Potter"? > > Valerie > > bboyminn: I think part of the premise of the program is that actors and actesses come on and act out a parody of themselves. In a sense, Dan /is/ a boy scout. He is this clean cut ultra-conservative (socially, not politically), never had a drink, probably never swears, well mannered boy scout of a boy. So, he comes on stage in a boy scout uniform and acts in the most UN-boy scout like manner. So, the boy scout image, is our public image of Dan, but when he comes on screen, he acts exactly the opposite of how we would expect Dan to act. When Orlando Bloom was on the show he strutted around like he thought he was the most beautiful man on earth, but the girls wouldn't give him the time of day. So, on this show, his persona is the oppossite of how the public normally preceives him. Or at least, that's my impression. I am glad MuggleNet had the disclaimer so I told send my sons to go do something in another room while I watched it. I will have to check out HBO to see when that comes on. Definitely didn't seem like the squeeky clean boy we think of Dan being. And I caught more than one swear word. Also, I thought the other two were a couple until Dan started flirting with her and the other guy didn't seem to care. It was pretty funny to watch - perhaps he will do well in Equus. Plus, the > series would really falter if he left. > > Robin > bboyminn: I'm guessing if Dan left they would shut the fanchise down, wait a couple years, and /try/ and restart with a whole new cast. They could probably find a Dan/Harry look-alike, but what are the odds that that person would be able to do the acting job as well. It would be a very difficult choice for the studios. The next versions, assuming the original cast is gone, could be very Americanized. Remember there were so early suggestions the Haley Joel Osment (Sixth Sense) play Harry. That might have so marketing value, but I don't think it bodes well of the story. As I mentioned in my other post, now that the kids are out of school they can proceed through the films faster, they can have a shorter production schedule, which will mean more free time between films to pursue other projects. Just a thought. Steve/bboyminn From bboyminn at yahoo.com Sun Sep 24 20:10:29 2006 From: bboyminn at yahoo.com (Steve) Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2006 20:10:29 -0000 Subject: No more Emma?!?!? NO!!! I just hope > (and pray) that the powers that be can convince her, > and all the others, to continue to the very end. > > Chris (flowerchild4) > bboyminn: Put yourself in their position (Dan/Emma/Rupert). You are involved in a fanchise that is a long term commitment, you like what you do, but you'd like to do something else as well. You are working for a company that is making billions off the franchise, and you have wisely (very wisely!) elected to sign up for the films one at a time. Now it is time to do the last two. Do you say, 'Oh goody goody, I don't care about the money as long as I'm having fun.' Or, do you say, 'Oh, I don't know, it is fun, but it's such a huge commitment, and it's taking away from the rest of my life.' Now finally ask yourself, which one do you think is going to net you a larger paycheck? I don't want it to sound like I think it is all about money or that thier actions are so cold and calculated, but none the less it is partly about money. For person their age, that money means a secure future. I suspect even the minor players like Tom (Draco) are doing a lot to secure their future. It is the money they make now that will allow them the flexibiity to pursue whatever future they the choose. I know Tom was set to quit the fanchise. He really wanted to go to the university and study fisheries management. But I suspect a few additional Zeroes on the end of his paycheck swayed him. Those 'few extra zeroes' are what is going to assure the Tom can comfortably go to the university and concentrate on his studies when it is all over. Again, I don't want to make it sound like it is all about money, but all the Potter Kids are at an age when they have to start thinking about their future, and part of what has the ability to insure that future is a large stash of money in the bank. I suspect Emma is weighing the worth of that money in the bank against, the lack of that money and the free time to live her life. Note while most kids her age are working at McDonalds or in some department story, Emma has lots of free time between movies. Further as they get older, and now that Emma has finished her A-Levels, the films can proceed faster. More time can be dedicated to filming and less to the child labor laws and school tutorials. I believe they are actually shooting the current and next movie at the same time, much like Lord of the Rings was shot. If they can get more of the film production schedules to overlap, that faster they can make the films and the more time off they can have between films. Also, now that they are older, artistic consideration come into play. Dan said he loved the Sixth book, but would have to wait until he saw the script before making up his mind. In the beginning, the basically took whatever was given them, recited their lines and did their best. Now the quality of their work is a reflection on them, and the quality of the script and directing affect the quality of their work. I think we are just seeing the normal complication and conflicts of growing up and become a fully realized independant person. I really wouldn't worry about it. I suspect the money and the quality of life that money insure will weigh heavily, and in the end, the accumulated wealth will outwiegh the short term free time. Keep in mind, it is not about the money, but about the freedom, flexibility, and opportunity that money brings. Although, if Emma really is not having fun, then no money can make up for living a miserable resticted existance. If she, or any of the other characters, do decide to leave, I trust that they will have made the best decision for themselves, and I will support them in that. Better to be happy than rich, though is even better to be happy AND rich. Just a few thoughts. I has to do with commerical fishing and fish 'farming', and other aspects of fishing. As you can see, he was planning on College/University in 2005, but I think he wieghed all the money he is making in the Potter Franchise and realized that if he sacrificed a bit now, he would be in a much better position in the future. The point I was making with this example, is that gaining this money gives them the luxury of doing what they truly want in the future, and Tom and Emma will be able to go to the university without the financial stresses that most students feel. They will be able to bide their time and find a career that suits them. Too many people go to work for the first place that will hire them, then live in drudgery for the rest of their lives. Money gives you the luxury of time, and all the Potter Kids seem wise enough to use that luxury of time wisely. Message-ID: Emma has done this for every film - she's always the last of the major cast members to sign up. And they're not filming the two films (OoP and HBP) at the same time! That's impossible with a "growing" cast (have you seen the new photos of the DA? Dean Thomas is as tall as the twins all of a sudden, half a head taller than Neville!!! And the trio are all still close to the same height as each other.) The HBP script hasn't been finished - Dan said in a recent interview (when asked if he was doing HBP) that he'd love to do it but "it depends on the script." Rupert said recently he's doing HBP, but other articles say nobody's signed yet. So they're not filming them both at the same time. That kind of thing is only possible with adult casts, as in "Pirates of the Caribbean." Kids change too much from year to year - remember how Dan's face went from soft and rounded to angular, with stunning cheekbones, in GoF? You could tell which scenes were done when he was younger and which when he was older, and they never shoot in order. I read somewhere that they had to change the sizes of some props due to the kids' growth - when they needed that set again (whichever it was), the scenes didn't match. The same thing happened in "Peter Pan" starring Jeremy Licht and Jason Issacs - they had to change the size of the window opening because Jeremy ("Peter") grew so much during the filming. As for Emma - a recent photo (in an Austrian magazine) shows her and Dan receiving Penguin Awards for best Actress and Actor. Her hair is very blond and she has long bangs (a "fringe" for you Brits). Yet in the stills from the film, her bangs are much longer, as they were for GoF, and off to the side, and her hair is darker. So is she wearing a Hermione wig now, or do they put a rinse on her hair every day to get it dark or what? Who knows. I do know that she doesn't have to work in the films nearly as much as Dan does, yet she doesn't do any "extra" projects like Dan and Rupert do (films, TV appearances, plays, etc.). She goes back to school and is a kid, which is perfectly fine. But she has leisure time the boys don't have as a result (which is the boys' choice). She just isn't as "into" acting as they are, I suppose, but she did say in one of those interviews that she'd like to do something after the Potter films are over - so I think she'll be back. And if she isn't - as long as the boys are there, I'll watch the rest of the films! But recasting Dan or Rupert would probably kill the franchise at this point, unless they waited years. This movie should be quite an experience for you! ;) As for the hair, I like Dan's comments as well. I can totally see Harry chopping it off in frustration and anger. Matt Lewis who plays Neville said in a Pottercast interview that though he'd never cut his hair the way Neville's has his for OOTP he can totally see Neville doing it. He said he pictures Neville standing in front of a mirror for hours trying to get it just right and it just won't happen for him. Astute observation on Neville's personality don't you think? :) Lily From OctobersChild48 at aol.com Wed Sep 27 16:07:24 2006 From: OctobersChild48 at aol.com (OctobersChild48 at aol.com) Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2006 12:07:24 EDT Subject: [HPFGU-Movie] Re: OOTP pics Message-ID: In a message dated 9/26/06 8:45:02 PM Eastern Daylight Time, gardengirlgarden at yahoo.com writes: > It's just you *laughs*.
