"It was one of the girls from the lake edge. She had thick, dark red
hair that fell to her shoulders and startlingly green almond-shaped
eyes -- Harry's eyes.
"Harry's mother . . ."
Although the scene isn't in first person narrative, it is what Harry is
seeing, so it seems to me that, yes, he does recognize his mother.
More to the point, later when Harry's thinking about the scene, he
can't understand why his mother would have married James Potter and he
wonders if his father might have forced her into marriage.
