Dondee:
When I first heard that David Yates was directing OOtP I rented a
few of his movie to get an idea of his directing style. I must say
that I am impressed by his work and I am very excited that we have
him involved in OOtP and HBP.
I was able to find and rent three of his movies: The Girl in the
Cafe, The Young Visitors, and The Way We Live Now.
The Girl in the Cafe is set in modern times and tells the story of a
very lonely man who meets a young woman by chance one day in a cafe
and the results of that chance meeting. The story has a political
aspect to it that is very emotionally compelling but the delicacy to
the relationship between the two main characters that Yates creates -
the long pauses - is really quite wonderful. I love a director who
is not afraid of long pauses, and knows just how long to stretch
them out for dramatic effect and give the actors the room to
actually act.
The Young Visitors and The Way We Live Now are both period pieces
and well staged and costumed. 'Visitors is more of a child-like
humorous yet poinant story with a small cast. 'Now is a wickedly
funny and dramatic mini-series and is based on the book by Anthony
Trollope.
All three movies star well known British actors such as Bill Nighy,
Kelly MacDonald, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie, Cillian Murphy, and
Shirley Henderson (who plays Moaning Myrtle).
All in all I think OOtP and HBP are in good hands. Yates can really
tap into the humor and urgency and poinancy of the moment, which is
exactly what is required for Harry's journey through these two
stories.
Cheers, Dondee
