I'd never given it much thought before, but they DO look alike. Bonnie Wright-Ginny and Geraldine Somerville- Lily Potter could easily be younger and older sisters. Nice catch. I think that just works out that much better for the movies. Of course, they say, we all marry our mothers. This is the last weekend for it. I've noticed many of the theatres are only playing it once a day now, in the Washington, DC area. Ah well...guess all the HP followers have seen it by now. Anyone know when the DVD is scheduled for release?! I love IMAX...the detail is so clear. I caught so many more of the set details this time around, now that I've seen the movie 4x, I can start to focus on other than the dialogue. My favorite parts of the movie were: - The scene when Harry is talking to Sirius in the Black family tapestry room. Dan's line delivery is sooooo awesome in that scene...the pauses, the intentional incomplete sentences...it just really portrays how confused Harry is about the whole Voldemort mind infiltration that is happening to him. - Also how pale and shaken he is after the Mr. Weasley/Nagini scene...you can really imagine how shocked and sickened he is by the whole experience, not wanting anyone in the Weasley family to know that HE was in the attacker position. How do you explain that to your best friend?! Dumbledore, of course, guessed it. - I still admire the wonderful touches of acting in the 'Quill Torture' scene... the horribly sadistic look on Umbridge/Staunton's face and the shocked and confused look he/Dan gives her. When that scene begins, in the theatre, you can hear a collective intake of breath from those who have read the books, knowing what's coming. And you can hear a pin drop during that whole scene and know that everyone is horrified by the injustice to our dear Harry. - I also love the delivery of lines and the physical mannerisms of Snape/Rickman in the Occlumency scene. He's so awesome. - And Lucius/Isaacs delivery of lines in the Ministry scenes. That incredible control versus the manic, unhinged Bellatrix. - And I thought a great job was done with Kreacher...the mutterings and hateful looks he gives Harry when he arrives at Grimmauld Place; the falsely ingratiating bowing and scraping to Sirius in the tapestry room...perfect, as per the book! ...What are your favorite scenes? My favorite scenes are the ones with Luna. I just thought she added so much to the movie. I've liked her okay enough until now. The movie really brought her to life. Evanna Lynch IS Luna Lovegood, hands down ! I also love all the emotion in this movie... Harry's anger and confusion about what's going on. When he screams "What's happening to me ?" at Dumbledore it just really depicted his raw emotion. I loved it and thought it was well done ! Also "The Kiss" !! I thought it would be cheesy but it was rather sweet. Dumbledore's Army was great ! Umbridge... ugh, loved hating her ! Twins, not enough of them, definitely ! LOVED Ginny and the subtle hints that she still had a thing for Harry, her spellwork was wicked awesome ! One of my favorite parts was at the end of the battle scene, when LV was possessing Harry and they were showing the flashbacks of Harry with Ron and Hermione and of his parents and then with Sirius. I just couldn't help but cry during that even though I knew he wasn't going to die. I loved it and thought it was very well done ! Valerie: Oh yeah, Evanna was fantastic, wasn't she!?! I don't believe she's ever acted before. She really nailed the character, but you liked her more in the movie than in the books. So sad about her being barefoot because the mean kids stole her shoes! Then her putting up the notices at the end, for her missing things. Poor Luna! And how about in DH when Harry sees the ceiling paintings in Luna's room of Ron, Hermione, Harry and Neville with the 'friends, friends, friends' ribbon of words. Wow. I hope they leave that in the movie. That was very touching. > One of my favorite parts was at the end of the battle scene, when LV > was > possessing > Harry and they were showing the flashbacks of Harry with Ron and > Hermione > and of his parents and then with Sirius. Each time I saw the film I caught a bit more. Like when Harry was looking in the mirror, then he turned into Voldemort, then Harry smashes the mirror, symbolizing his breaking the connection between the 2 of them. Great composite of images there. Great directing. I was trying to imagine how they would have his thoughts leaking out of him...creepy! And then they have to have the pensieve scene, tho maybe they will somehow combine those 2 scenes to save time; i.e. Harry does some sort of Legilimens on Snape before he dies and sees all the flashbacks that way. They have to have Kings Cross with Dumbledore. I found the whole camping out thing dragged on quite a bit. They will probably tighten that up. As someone had previously mentioned here, they might not show Fleur and Bill's wedding and sea cottage. They'll probably delete the Dobby plot, since they've forgotten him in the movies since COS. It's apparent he will play a vital role in the last film. Dobby not so much, but he does die part 7. I would think the deaths would be important enough to show in the last film. Only time will tell. They've already included Kreacher because Kreacher is essential. So- He's the one who goes to get them at Malfoy Manor. I think they'll leave out Bill and Fleur, the wedding, Shell Cottage completely- those scenes will be at Athur and Molly's. They'll condense a lot of the tent and hiding. They'll probably leave out the Percy reconciliation since they've left out the Percy estrangement. Rita's digs at Dumbledore will either be left out, or just in the background somewhere. ("Just once more for luck, Master Harry?") I think they'll cut down on the spectacle of Bill and Fleur's wedding, but the main thing that will need to be condensed because it's hard to film and will slow the action is most of the Dumbledore backstory. The scene with Bathilda!Nagini will be terrifying, especially for very young children, but I hope they don't cut it. Ditto for George's ear and Charity Burbage. Snape's death scene will be unbearable to watch but it has to be there. Regulus *should* be in there, as a dreamlike flashback, but they'll have to cut the scene before he's pulled under. Even so, how they'll make this film suitable for children, I don't know. I think parents will have to be *strongly* cautioned. I wish they could cut out the Elder Wand plot altogether but they can't because of the death of Snape, for one. And I really hope they keep in as much Snape as possible. I suppose they'll condense his memories, but I hope they keep most of them. And Harry's public vindication of Snape, even though it will be greatly condensed. As SK said, they probably can't cut Dobby because he rescues HRH and the others from Malfoy Manor and ties in with Aberforth. I don't think they can cut Ollivander, either, and I don't see how they can manage the Gringotts break-in without Griphook. The Ministry scenes can be condensed; they probably won't have Ron as Reg Cattermole struggling to fix Yaxley's raining office, for example. Potterwatch will probably be cut as well. The Lupin/Tonks subplot and Shell Cottage are expendable. So, sad to say, is the epilogue. The doe Patronus and Sword of Gryffindor *must* be in there. Neville killing Nagini ditto. King's Cross is a key scene that will surprise filmgoers who haven't read the books. It will be interesting to see how it's handled, especially since it's mostly dialogue. That IS the main Deathly Hallow! They'd have to change the name of the movie altogether; perhaps to Harry Potter and the Deathly Horcruxes?!. I personally got confused with all that Horcrux vs. Hallows plotline. But the Elder wand turns out to be Voldemort's demise, and it is tied to so many plotpoints, albeit very convoluted ones. As for Cate Blanchett, I'd see her and think "Galadriel"--altogether the wrong image (and I don't like the sinister edge that she or Peter Jackson or the scriptwriters gave to that character, anyway). Also, maybe it's just me, but I think she looks like JKR. I think Narcissa should be more beautiful as opposed to attractive. I'm trying to think what British actress I'm familiar with could play both a heartless, bigoted snob (the Madam Malkin scene and the DH scene in which Hermione is tortured) and a tearful beauty begging a stern man to protect her son ("Spinner's End"). All the women I can think of are too young for the part. I suppose Nicole Kidman could manage pretty well (and she's the right age), but I think it would be really fun if they put Helena Bonham-Carter in a blonde wig, minus the vamp outfit, and had her play a dual role as Narcissa and Bellatrix. Actually, what you said there reminds me of certain scenes in GOF. Dan's hair is obviously cut shorter when it shouldn't be according to the scene. ;) Example: In the Yule Ball, when Ron is looking at himself in the mirror in his tacky dress robes, Harry comes out of the bathroom and his hair is cut shorter, whereas it's longer in the very next scene. Those were obviously filmed on different days. Same with: in the Gryffindor dormitory when Ron asks Harry how he put his name in the GOF... His hair is shorter there too. Hence, there's some scenes obviously not filmed in chronological order in the movies. Carol responds: I almost never watch TV--only "Sunday Morning," "Monk," and maybe the news and weather, or "Funniest Home Videos" if I'm in the mood for something utterly mindless. I realize that the role has been cast, but, to me, Hughes doesn't look the part. In fact, he looks like "a right old slob"--Tonks's description of her father. So, on the off chance that Ted Tonks is included in DH, maybe they'll cast him for that part. This one has photos of Billy Connolly, but it misspells Xeno's name as "Zenophilius." http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/connolly%20lined%20up%20for%20potter_1044239 I notice that the version you cited refers to Xenophilius as "a simple and brave wizard" who has "shoulder length white hair the texture of candyfloss." Hair the texture of candyfloss is right (I don't remember the length), but "simple and brave"? Um, erm, I don't know what to say. He loves his daughter, certainly, but I wouldn't call him brave. Or simple, either. (I'd reserve that second adjective for Elphias Doge, who most likely won't appear in the film.) BTW, isn't it awfully early to be casting DH? Neither article regards the casting as confirmed, and both have question marks after the headlines. I thought I had found the article at Leaky, but apparently not. Don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it yet, so... * * * * * * SPOILER SPACE * * * * * * First of all, I am very surprised that it is only playing in ONE theatre in all of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Sheesh! I had to go all the way into DC (I live in the suburbs). I'm trying to figure out who they are marketing this film to (not that I've seen much marketing!). If they are hoping to cash in on Dan Radcliffe's fame, then playing it downtown DC where very few teen girls live, was not a good choice. In fact there were only adults in the theatre...hmmm. I found December Boys to be a sweet, quiet little film. By that I mean that it doesn't have the special effects, exploding sets and the fantasy, such as our dear Harry Potter films. Very true-to-life situations and emotions: [wanting to belong, wanting to be loved, coming of age by learning some of life's harsh lessons: [sometimes you have to take a crappy job to survive; sometimes people get cancer; sometimes love and sex can be misconstrued.] The relationship between the 4 December Boys is endearing. Each of them have their own personalities; I found Maps (Dan Rad.) and Misty's characters the most developed. In fact one critique that I read was that the movie couldn't decide whether it wanted to be about Misty's longings to be adopted, or Maps' sexual coming of age. Though I know plenty of movies that have simultaneous plots, so I don't think that's very relevant. Dan is beautiful (another critic said he looked like he dropped out of a GQ magazine, or something to that effect.) Those large soulful eyes just really make him stand out against the crowd. He is prettier than the girl IMO, LOL!!!) I found myself not liking her as she is a bit of a loose floozy, just getting her kicks with Maps, whereas he is completely smitten with her. I adore his little giggle when she says she'll 'teach him'. He is waaayyy out of his league with this naughty young lady! The 'deflowering' scene is implied without being graphic. Some scenes seem a bit forced (like when Dan was yelling at the motorcycle guy, or when the crazy ole fisherman was dancing around.) But overall I thought the actors do their characters credit. I don't imagine December Boys will win any awards or break any box offices, but it is a compelling and emotional story. It will be interesting to see what sort of film Daniel takes on after the HP series is finished. I wonder if he has a career plan, or if he will take it as it comes? Not sure if this film will do anything substantial for his career, other than to show that he can act without the glasses and wand! In actuality the Maps character is quite similar to Harry Potter; insecure, hesitant, melancholic. And very unlike Dan (from what I read), who is happy, curious and vivacious. I think Equus did wonders for his career, though of course, being on stage, the masses of humanity did not get to experience it. (I do hope it comes to Broadway with him!!) I look forward to watching his continued development. Message-ID: Thanks for the December Boys review! It's only on 16 screens nationwide this week. Go to _www.decemberboys.com_ (http://www.decemberboys.com) for a list of where and when it opens. I'll have to drive 100 miles to Cincinnati to see it unless it opens wider by Oct. 19. It was interesting to read some of the reviews after seeing and reading so many of the video and print interviews for the film. I was kind of annoyed to read a review that made rude comments about his "hairy legs" - do reviewers say anything about Robin Williams' hairy ANYTHING (and Williams is massively hairy!!)? NO! But poor Dan, yikes, they won't give him a break. The combination of pale skin (so pale he's "blue" according to Dan in one TV interview - on Rove, that was it - a VERY funny interview, look for it on YouTube) with dark hair is going to make his legs look different, especially since he's still young and skinny, but to pick on that kind of thing to comment on in a review???? Yikes, that's annoying! As for interesting interviews/reviews, Rove was by far one of the funniest. In quite a few interviews, Dan was asked "why this film? Why Australia?" He said this was the best script that came his way that would fit into his schedule, and he would go anywhere for a good script. He also said a director he met with but hasn't worked with told him the next thing he did after Potter should be an ensemble piece where the burden wasn't on his shoulders, so "December Boys," which is really Misty's story, was perfect for that. So yeah, I think he does have a bit of a career plan - he's said over and over that he won't take a role just to work. It has to be challenging, interesting and different or he won't want to do it. He wants a career like Gary Oldman's and Christian Bales's, with big movies and independent films and stage roles. That kind of "career plan" should give him a long and successful career, much more so than if all he wanted to do was blockbusters. Yikes, one flopped blockbuster at the box office can do serious damage to some people's careers. If December Boys is a moderate success, I think he'll be well pleased. I just hope it's enough of a success to open wider so I don't have to drive 100 miles to see it!! Yeah, I did note the hairy legs first off, but then again was a bit surprised to see them in GOF during the 2nd task. I think that was possibly filmed late in the production schedule, when his hair was longer and he looked a bit older to me. December Boys was filmed between GOF and OotP. Dan's really not that skinny, actually. He has nicely toned legs, and as we know from the Equus pix a well-defined torso, arms, and well...bum! (not that I'm looking that closely, ha! LOL). I respect that Dan is interested in doing other things than just blockbusters. It might be tough to try and beat 'the most successful series of all time'. But if he's looking for stage roles, indie films, etc, that is quite respectable to add to his acting portfolio. I think that's possibly more of a 'Brit' mentality. A lot of the veteran Potter actors have a huge, varied body of work. For any 'Dan fan' it's interesting to see him acting in other than Potter. Even if you do have to drive 100 miles, Lynda. :-) Valerie<<< I didn't mean he was skinny as in "scrawny" - he's beautifully toned, "in excellent nick" as the Brits say. But he's small too, poor guy (on Rove, a huge blond woman sitting next to him bumped him and grabbed him around the shoulders and said "Oh, he's so TINY!" and on something that just showed up on DR.com a couple of days ago, Dan surprised a young fan at the Odeon theater and gave him an autograph. Dan said he was very pleased to meet the boy, and that it was cool that Dan was taller than him! Then Dan said, "How old are you?" and the boy said "10" and Dan gasped, "I'm 18!" and made some other comment I can't recall right now. I sure hope he grows some more - sometimes I think he's got a really good attitude about his size, and other times, like this one, I think yeah, he really does wish he'd get bigger). I noticed his hairy legs in GoF too, and the bit of hair on his chest in the Prefect's bathroom scene. Those two scenes helped me understand what he meant when he said he could tell the difference in when some scenes were filmed because he "knew what to look for." Now he has enough hair on his chest (apparently) that it shows through the collar of his shirt. I remember as a teen what a shock it was to see that kind of thing on boys - suddenly, they were men! And I think that's what all the "hairy leg" hoopla is about. Dan says some people think he's Peter Pan and will be a boy forever - and that they need to get over that. And yeah, I think he's doing the Brit actor thing of having a well-rounded career, one that will last a lot longer than most Hollywood child stars' careers. And yes, I will be driving the 100 miles each way to Cincinnati to see "December Boys" - possibly more than once if I really like the film! :) Lynda AKA "Abraxan" My blog: _www.abraxan.blogspot.com_ (http://www.abraxan.blogspot.com/) Read my Harry Potter fics here: _http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPRefinersFire/_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPRefinersFire/) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From minnie_mouse0229 at yahoo.com Mon Sep 24 03:22:49 2007 From: minnie_mouse0229 at yahoo.com (minnie_mouse0229) Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 03:22:49 -0000 Subject: December Boys Review (spoilers!) I will say, I felt a bit flushed when Dan removed all his clothes, but soon forgot about the fact that he was totally naked, as the scenes are so intense. I couldn't just go all the way to London and only go once, so went again our last night there. This time I had a stage seat and was right above where Dan generally sat when not performing. It was a good thing I'd already seen the play, because I spent most of the second time watching Dan fidget. Also got the chance to meet him briefly when he came out the stage door one night. We had actually gone a different night, arriving and waiting for 2 hours on the off chance Dan would come out and got very lucky:) Dan is wonderfully nice and polite. He made eye contact with everyone he signed autographs for. That happened my second night in London, so needless to say I was on cloud 9 the rest of our trip:) From valerie.flowe at verizon.net Thu Sep 27 12:41:25 2007 From: valerie.flowe at verizon.net (Valerie Flowe) Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 08:41:25 -0400 Subject: [HPFGU-Movie] Re: December Boys Review (spoilers!) It really made me want to visit Australia; those rock formations were gorgeous! What a great experience that must have been for your daughter! I recently rented Billy Elliot with Julie Walters. She's such an awesome actress. I love to see her in different roles. She personifies Mrs. Weasley so well, IMO. I love the smile she gives Harry in OotP when he arrives at Sirius's house; then her smile disappears to become a worried frown as soon as Harry turns his back to go upstairs. That little look tells the audience that all is certainly not well in the Wizarding World. And she is always trying to protect Harry, as though he were one of her own. Boy, am I glad JKR didn't kill her off! Or Mr. Weasley, for that matter. They really were surrogate parents for Harry, and I can imagine how excited they were when Jenny and Harry got married and had their babies. :-) Valerie From valerie.flowe at verizon.net Thu Sep 27 12:59:10 2007 From: valerie.flowe at verizon.net (Valerie Flowe) Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 08:59:10 -0400 Subject: [HPFGU-Movie] Re: Equus review In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <83e5c7bbaf161f3f50c9b8782321c5a8@verizon.net> > > > Minnie Mouse: > It was an incredible experience, Valerie! Equus twice and then actually seeing him up close and personal, eye-to-eye! I really hope Equus comes to Broadway, even for a short one month run in between HP filmings. NYC is about 5 hours from me, but I would most definitely go! So does this guy have ANY faults? Wait, I don't want to know. I'd like to live under the illusion that he is impeccably well-raised; polite, considerate, friendly, energetic, mature, has awesome taste in music, and amazing eyes! So why doesn't this kid have a girlfriend? In an interview it stated that his family bought a house in Australia. Perhaps he'll meet some adorable, cheerful, sweet, laid-back Aussie girl to 'go steady with'? :-) V~ From artsylynda at aol.com Thu Sep 27 13:04:57 2007 From: artsylynda at aol.com (artsylynda at aol.com) Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 09:04:57 EDT Subject: December Boys Review (spoilers!) He's so high-energy when he's performing, it's amazing. You were certainly lucky to get to see the play and TWICE! Wow! When it comes to NYC (Notice I said "when" not "if" -thinking positively here!), I hope I can talk my hubby into going twice! Of course, if he chooses not to go, I'll go at LEAST twice!! But I don't want to go to NYC by myself. I do have some friends who want to go too, so hopefully we can all work it out on our schedule to go together! :) Lynda AKA "Abraxan" My blog: _www.abraxan.blogspot.com_ (http://www.abraxan.blogspot.com/) Read my Harry Potter fics here: _http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPRefinersFire/_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPRefinersFire/) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From turn2pg394 at yahoo.com Fri Sep 28 04:40:05 2007 From: turn2pg394 at yahoo.com (can can) Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 21:40:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: December Boys Message-ID: <651723.99327.qm@web57108.mail.re3.yahoo.com> Hey ya going? is that what he said?LOL Anyway, just saw December Boys myself. It was the last night it was playing here and I just found out on Tuesday. Slightly PO-ed by that, but whatever. Anyway, great movie. I was really proud of Dan, thought he did an excellent job in it. And I have to admit, even though I am an adult, I punked out on the "sex" scene. I thought I could watch it, but I couldn't. I never like watching actors kiss in movies or on TV unless I know they are really a couple. Now don't get me wrong, I watched the kiss in Order because I'm a big Harry/Cho person so that was my only real visual, so I got through that. But I couldn't in this movie. I kept saying "he's a baby, he's just a baby!" Sorry, sorry, I'm not one of those adults that don't want them to grow up, I do, I just couldn't deal. When it comes out on DVD, I'll make myself watch it...without cringing!LOL The scenery was great. The other little boys and Teresa Palmer (is that Lucy's name) were great as well. Anyway, my boyfriend was convinced we were rushing to see this for no reason, that it couldn't possibly be only playing this week in a big city. I told him I looked it up and this was it for Chicago. A guy in the audience asked me that too, I told him I saw it was set to be released next week in some other cities but gone from here. Sucks, because I only got to see it once. I saw Driving Lessons 4 times when it was here. Oh well, thanks for letting me vent. Go see December Boys when it comes near you, it's worth it. peace...real love... I just looked at BoxOfficeMojo (a list of how many theaters all movies are in that comes to my email each week - shows how many weeks the film has been out, whether it's declining or getting into more theaters, etc.). December Boys for this week was in 13 theaters around the country, an increase of five theaters over last week, and this is it's third week in release. George Clooney's movie "Michael Clayton" will open in only 15 theaters, but then it opens nationwide. *sigh* That's the problem with indie films, they don't have the deep pockets behind them to open wide. And honestly, if Dan weren't in the film, I know I wouldn't bother with it, and probably a lot of you guys wouldn't either. It would probably have never left Australia if Dan weren't in it. I hope it does well enough to open wider, but I'm not holding my breath. I haven't seen any box office numbers for it (how many people have been to see it). I don't know where to find that info. The BoxOfficeMojo site has it but you have to pay to get that kind of info and I'm not THAT much of a fanatic! (Close, though . . .) I'll be out of town when it opens in Cincinnati Oct. 12 and won't be able to go the next week either, so I sure hope it will be in Cincinnati longer than a week!!!!! Where did you find out how long it would be in town? Maybe there's a website I've missed in my poking around for movie info on the Internet . . . Oh, and the site where I get the theater counts is _www.boxofficemojo.com_ (http://www.boxofficemojo.com) - I signed up for the weekly newsletter. That's where Driving Lessons was shown, and it was only here for a week. It is unlikely that December Boys will be here longer than that. If I can remember to do so I will call the Esquire to see what I can find out and pass the information on. So far still no theatres in Canada are playing December Boys, not even in Toronto (I live right outside there). :''( I'm kinda distraught that the movie industry is doing this to me... I feel deceived that I don't get to see this! And I agree that they're making big mistakes not opening it in places where teenagers are more likely to see it. :-P I had to read your comments even though there were spoilers, seeing as it's the closest I've been to seeing it so far. I live in Wash., DC, and it only played in ONE theatre for TWO weeks. :-( Guess we'll have to wait for the video now. Driving Lessons played down the street at our local 'arts cinema'. But briefly. I also want to see "In the Wild" the new Sean Penn movie. It is in limited release in 3 theatres in this area. And THAT movie has gotten a lot of press. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam did the soundtrack and it is fantastic! Valerie
